This Cathedral is an amazing piece of art built and rebuilt over eight centuries from 8th to 16th century, with an earlier one standing there as early as 4c. Therefore, you can spot very different architecture styles best seen in its three towers each in different style - Gothic, Flamboyant and Renaissance. The facade is simply astonishing being the one of the best I've ever seen, and I saw hundreds of them all over the world. It's grandeur is overwhelming compared to Rouen size which is in fact a small city. The interiors are pretty much the same as many others in this part of France with huge tall Gothic arches, fantastic stained glass and rose window. On the square in front of it, by the right tower is a plaque signing the place from where the famous impressionist Monet painted many paintings of the Cathedral in various weather conditions and different times of year. Another spot of his from where he painted, as well a beautiful place to capture the entire Rouen panorama is Cote Saint Catherine (see that review), from where you can clearly see how this Cathedral dominates the city.

In the early evening (in August) the sunlight falls beautifully on the cathedral. Next to the cathedral there is the cathedral’s garden that is worth a look. There is an impressive light show (Google Rouen Cathedral Light Show and check the hours - until September 19, 2021). The light show (with two creations) plays twice in succession. We also stayed for the second showing and the big crowd was gone. It felt more like a unique experience.

It’s a bit bizarre. There’re a lot of nearly life size sculptures placed on the side. Ragnar’s brother Rollo buried and baptized here!!! Light show in the summer is amazing.

Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Rouen stands as a magnificent testament to Gothic architecture, a marvel that captivates visitors with its intricate details and soaring spires. Beyond its architectural grandeur, what makes the experience truly magical is the enchanting Christmas market that unfolds in front of the cathedral. The market adds a festive charm, transforming the square into a winter wonderland of twinkling lights, seasonal treats, and artisanal crafts. The juxtaposition of the cathedral's timeless beauty with the lively holiday spirit of the market creates a unique and memorable atmosphere, making a visit during the Christmas season to Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Rouen a truly delightful and festive experience.

Rouen cathedral is a must see when in Rouen, in the summer months , they have an interactive sound and light show beamed onto the front of the cathedral every evening, something which may have Richard the lion heart (buried inside) turning in his grave. The cathedral is grand , with a decent array of normandy medieval tombs and good stained glass. There is, though, something that doesn't quite elevate it to say Amiens cathedral architecturally although the historic tombs more than make up for that in many ways. The light show outside in the evening is well worth a look so do come back to take a look at that too.

What a place. Visually stunning, some seriously old stained glass windows. Free entry. They are renovating various parts at the moment - but there is a lot of original architecture which is amazing.

Wonderful example of three architectures with each one done incredibly well. This is a must see in the region and I would say it should be on every Europe must see. There is a reason that Monet painted so often.

We stopped over in Rouen, it's just the right distance for the first day after the Newhaven Dieppe crossing for us, the days of hurtling on, south are long gone. Now we love to see these projected light and sound shows now, nearly all the larger towns do something, Le mans, Amiens, all over, we found them quirky, different but nearly always worth seeing, of course it's an acquired taste, but from the crowds there, to use a familiar phrase we are not alone. This year's show is 25 mins long, first half was 🤔 but the second half was excellent. Hopefully we'll get to see next year's etc

We were in Rouen for the 1st night of the Cathedral light show, and it was fantastic. Very clever use of projectors and using the facade as a screen. The interactive part was a bit lame but otherwise brilliant. The inside of the building is very impressive with many stained glass windows and intricate carvings.

The most famous Cathedral I know thanks Claude Monet pictures. It's majestic and elegant, full of history and melancholy. The facade is impotent by the little square where is placed the church. Inside a lot of details and artistic repertoires.

Although under reconstruction(which might seems forever), the majesty of this cathedral is inside out, even from faraway. It's easy to get lost in the winding alleys but with this enormous building being easily seen from every corner of the city, you can always find your way back.

If you go to Rouen, you can not miss visiting this Cathedral, Rouen center is beautiful and lively so with this they have the perfect attraction for an outdoor night show. It is surrounded by nice restaurants and cafés. I attended at least two of them and had a nice view and relaxed dinner while waiting for the show to start. The Cathedral in general is beautifully imposing due to its gothic design ♥️. The light show is a must for everyone that visits Rouen or Normandy!

Absolutely stunning cathedral amazing stone decorations/carvings on the outside and the inside of the building Got to admire the detail and pure talent of the stone masons The stained glass is stunning I'm not religious but you really don't have to be to admire and be in awe of this truly beautiful cathedral It's open to the public and free of charge to go inside and look around or pray if you want But it does kindly ask for a voluntary donation.. Please do As this helps preserve this truly important Piece of history for the future Inside it has a number of chapels and tributes to various saints My reason for my venture inside was to see Saint Jeanne of arc as Rouen is steeped in her history But many other saints are prominent inside Words truly do not describe this cathedral and I could go on and on about the stained glass windows The high arc ways that go so high inside The highly carved alters etc.. But one thing I must mention is don't miss the 15th century stone staircase.. So if in Rouen this cathedral is a must see

The vast cathedral with notable spires seen across the river from all over the quaint little town. Beautiful is least to say. A must visit if you are walking around Rouen. They do guided tour and price is nominal. Climb up the tower to have a great view of whole city. Walkable distance from city center

Rouen is a beautiful city in the Normandy region of France. This city although small is one of the prettiest I have ever visited. The cathedral is just one of the city’s rich architecture. The cathedral is imposing and can be seen from various points in the city. It is nice inside but fairly modest than cathedrals and churches in Italy. The surrounding buildings are beautiful. Rouen is a place you have visit to see it for yourself. You can reach here from Paris by train. It is fairly easy to get there by car as well. It’s free entry with a small gift shop inside.

Gorgeous cathedral that has the tombs of Richard lion’s heart and his father Duke Rollo. It contains the heart of King Richard.

No wonder why Monet decided to spend quite some time drawing the facade. The Gothic church is very amazing and beautiful

Loved seeing the building...lots of construction going on....beautiful still the same. Just dont espect to see Rolo's tomb or Richard the Lionheart's.

Prepare to be awe-inspired when you lay your eyes on the magnificent Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Rouen. Steeped in history and architectural brilliance, this 12th-century marvel stands tall as a true testament to the remarkable craftsmanship and artistic prowess of its time. The towering structure of the cathedral dominates the Rouen skyline, with its spires reaching towards the heavens. In fact, one of its towers, known as the Tour de Beurre, is the tallest in all of France, providing an unparalleled panoramic view of the city. As you step inside, the grandeur of Notre-Dame de Rouen captivates you. The interior is adorned with soaring vaulted ceilings, intricate stained glass windows, and ornate stone carvings that reflect the exquisite craftsmanship of the past. The play of light through the colorful stained glass creates a mesmerizing effect, infusing the space with an ethereal aura. History comes alive within the hallowed walls of this cathedral. It is believed that the heart of Richard the Lionheart, the renowned English king and military leader, was interred here. This adds a sense of mystique and intrigue, further igniting the curiosity of visitors to delve into the cathedral's rich past.

A very beautiful cathedral. In the evening every day, in summer at 23.00, you can see an impressive 3D video mapping show on the facade of the cathedral.

One of the most famous sights in Rouen, the Cathedral is really imprssive. The building is huge and one of the tallest in Europe. It began to be built nearly 900 years ago, and survived fires, wars, hurricanes, etc. It was painted by Monet and other artists. The entrance is free. You can see tombs of some of the rulers of Normandie inside.

Very pretty on both the inside and out. We visited rollo's tomb and got to take a look at a ceremony, yet, somehow, my feet started burning when i set foot inside. Doesn't that happen for everybody though?

Its like Paris Notre Dame cathedral. Just gorgeous, the carvings in it frontal part are incredible, we couldn’t visit inside but just the outside was worth it.

Really worth the effort to visit. I would like to pay by card to purchase a candle, but the machine didn't work. It's too pity. I would like to contribute a bit to help renovate the church

  • 5/5 Jane P. 10 months ago on Google
Beautiful church lovely lady in the church shop spoke English very helpful I asked her to open cabinets and she was very helpful. Lovely to see so many lit candles in memoriam. Considering it was badly damaged during the war the restoration has to be admired as it blends in so you really can't tell.

Pros: beautifull exterior, Cons: nothing special inside to see, I have already seen the much nicer interiors... even there are some reconstruction works done inside so the overall impresions are mixed

Unmissable sight in Rouen and Normandy. Its famous west facade, immortalized many times by Monet, is a truly gothic art gem. The entrance is free (as it must be in cathedrals).
