It’s a perfectly nice YMCA, but one of the reasons our family joined was access to an indoor pool. Family swim times are limited and there are just too many members at this location to accommodate everyone in the therapy pool. Except once, every time I’ve taken my son swimming, we either had to wait or were told to leave because pool was at capacity and there was a line already waiting to use the pool. There’s really nothing the staff can do if the building is too small, but some info about other YMCA swimming options would be helpful, or post signs so you don’t get in, get changed and only find out when you enter the pool area. I would understand better if it was a public pool or this was an infrequent issue, but it’s frustrating to pay $100/month only to be told almost every time that you can’t use an amenity you’re paying for. We’re going to end up switching to a larger branch even though it’s much further out. If taking your kids to the pool is important to you, I highly recommend joining a different YMCA.

I'm gonna be honest. I don't know if it's just me, or maybe I've been too spoiled by the gyms in FL... but the weight training room leaves MUCH to be desired. Maybe it's because its YMCA and not a commercialized space--- but the equipment is old and run down. It's a pity because I'm paying $40 a month for a gym that sparks no joy, and it's a gorgeous space, mind you. I don't know who designed the interior or who handles the budget for this place but it could use a serious makeover. A lot of the weight machines look like they belong in the 90's and most of them are not even in working conditions. I'm considering switching to a more modern gym for this reason alone, which is a shame because oaksquare is SO close to where I live. On a side note, I want to add that I do love the love they put into community events and the service is fantastic, but if you're looking for a decent strength training gym--- this ain't it. Looking to run on treadmills and cardio? Sure.

The oak square YMCA is the most amazing fitness center I have ever been to. On a normal day they are open from 6am to 10pm and when I get there at six every morning I am treated with a nice friendly “hello, good morning”. They have amazing gym equipment and there is a free weight gym and a machines gym. All the negative reviews that say that things were old or dirty or missing equipment were from before they got all of their new equipment. Now they have anything you could possibly need to workout from instructors to battle ropes. Lastly if you are under 18 it’s only FIFTEEN BUCKS a month. My family has the family membership and eight of us use it saving us loads of cash. I would highly recommend this YMCA.

The people who work here are knowledgeable, professional, and very friendly. I enjoyed the workout class outside in the parking lot. The spaces are clean, and the environment is welcoming.

I am always welcomed and greeted when I walk in. The weight area downstairs is always clean, as is the cardio room upstairs. I recommend anyone who has not had a chance to explore this YMCA do so!!!

They have a very rude and unhelpful staff. I watched them ignore a man who got his wallet stolen because they knew the kids who stole the wallet. Then just today I went in with my girlfriend on our only day off together to use one of my 3 guest passes for the year and they chose not to honor it because I didn't have a physical copy instead of being helpful and making a note on my account. There were 6 people behind the desk all staying silent as their rude coworker used attitude in telling us they couldn't help. Also the gym is in bad shape compared to other YMCA’s.

Went here very recently to see what type of facility it was as it relates to overall suitability for training. The young college-age gentleman at the front desk did not acknowledge me due to his face being glued to his iPhone. I waited about 30 seconds before I asked him for some assistance. He was helpful and courteous. This facility is very well equipped. It has a nice lap pool, basketball courts and plenty of free weights and cardio equipment for everyone to enjoy! The locker room is large and has plenty of space for the guys to put their belongings. The only issue that I had was that the upstairs cardio area was very, very warm and it smelled like sweat. It was disgusting. If anyone was carrying a virus or bacterium, it is likely that many people would have been exposed to any virulent spores. That is not a situation that anyone would want to be in. I don't know if management will read this but, if they do, I hope they turn the thermostat down to 60° Fahrenheit at least 8 hours PRIOR to the peak times so that the cardio area is not so hot and humid when it gets crowded. On another note: management should be vigilant about older men who wear entirely inappropriate shorts and tank tops during their workout. I noticed an older gentleman (same guy) working out on the machines and sweating profusely. He failed to wipe down two machines that I saw him working out on! It was repulsive. Indeed, people must have respect for those who want to use the machines after them, so it is good manners and good hygiene to wipe down the machines after each use. I have a couple of day passes that I and my partner will use this week. Maybe I will ask the management team about the possibility of lowering the thermostat to 60° Fahrenheit 8 hours PRIOR to the cardio area becoming busy. If they are able to do that, then, I and my family will join. The YMCA is, overall, a fabulous place to train both for individuals as well as families. Thank you very much. 😊😊😊

Clean, well maintained, staff always available for questions or help. I'm not a swimmer, but do like to water walk. Always a lane available to do this wonderful exercise. .The therapy pool, needs more time slots available to crowded..

The Oak Square YMCA is awesome. My daughter does swim lessons here and we always have a fantastic experience. The facilities are great - we wish we had more time to take some of the other awesome-looking classes!

I love that there are fitness classes and great cardio machines. Just walking through and seeing people of all ages, books or food available for anyone to take, and people engaged in all sorts of different activities make it feel warm and welcoming.

The kids love the time to play, get together with friends, do homework, work on projects and enjoy the counselors and environment. We have been very grateful to have this program available and our children use both before and after school programs with the Y!

Clean facilities and friendly staff & environment. Been going here for almost 3yrs. Travel from the north end to Brighton for the gym. Worth the commute.

Fantastic selection of activities tailored for kids. Our children picked up foundational swimming skills at the Y, thanks to the warm and professional instructors. After relocating to a different city, my kids often reminisced and inquired about returning to their swimming sessions at the Y. A big thank you to Oak Square Y for such a memorable experience!

i LOVE the Oak Square Y; they have consistently had excellent instructors for their group fitness classes. They have a wide range of classes, too, from yoga to Zumba to weightlifting and HIIT. Great value!

😐 A pretty decent gym. It won't blow you away but its one of the better ones in Boston. However, despite them following the rules and implementing numerous protocols to keep the gym clean and safe, they are being shut down by the Mayor again.
