If you like old west / historic fort type stuff, you'll appreciate this little known park. There are a dozen or so of the original adobe structures to see, but no complete ones and all have been reinforced (except the remains of the bakery) to protect what remains of the underlying adobe. Many of the structures have nice explanatory displays. The structures are spread out so you'll get around a mile of walking in. The fort is situated in a desolate, but pretty valley. The museum was closed when I visited, but it had displays with notes designed for through-window viewing. There are two original cannons on display as well as a few old wagon wheels. The cemetery contains the grave of a rancher and his family, but no Soldiers. I wouldn't invest a lot of effort coming to the park unless you incorporate it with seeing other nearby places. For me, these include Virginia City, the Nevada State Railroad Museum, Genoa and old Dayton.

Fort Churchill has a unique story because of its place and time. The park is well developed and was able to handle my group nearing 200 adult men. Plenty of parking was available for our group. A Ranger provided a comprehensive discussion of the particulars (who, what, where, how, when & why) about the site. The general area around the Fort in Nevada should be traveled to understand specifics. A great museum-quality display area overlooks restored actual building remnants. The museum provides photographs and scaled model depictions of the fort while in use as well as actual artifacts. Nearby, a ranch house used as a stage station and a Pony Express station also has been preserved for visiting. My group was mobile and a stop at Wabuska beckoned. There's surely some great early Nevada history to see at Fort Churchill.

Beautiful well done Nevada and American history. Worth seeing, take your time to walk the loop and read the signs. Easy path, about a mile if you start at the little museum. Dog friendly, just keep them on a leash and pick up after them if they leave a surprise.

If History is your Intention of learning about the Great Fort Churchill Historical State Park, there are many monuments that are engraved in worn concrete,a cemetery with the local soldier's plots, these old Fort buildings from 1861. It's a ground of Authentic buildings still standing, with Cannons behind a rod iron fence, the Museum was open for extra information on Fort Churchill. A State Park with old railroad tracks, Campgrounds and near the Carson River, most roads are closed from Flash Floods, ground is still moist and ground is breaking up like a puzzle with different figurations. It's a place to take pictures with cloud formations for a composition of the ornate creation of complex patterns of History. It reminded me of Stonehenge. It's worth a drive to see old history.

Well worth a visit to see the remains of this fort and read about its place in time. Also the campground while primitive was perfect and provided shade and a very quiet night with some beautiful stars

There was some flooding the Spring from all of the epic precipitation this year.. That has resulted in some key trails. Being closed to the public for the time being. That said the ruins are fascinating and I appreciate the access to shoot photos at night from this historic location. In the Spring, the bugs are absolutely ravenous and high. And number bring a mosquito netting for your head and face. The only open restrooms were in the camping area., Though it is possible, the park office may have restrooms during their open hours.

Fort Churchill State Historic Park is a great state park and place to visit in the middle of the Nevada desert. There are a few trails, and multiple historical dirt/clay buildings from the previous military fort. Nearby is the Carson River with some great scenery and camp spots. Well worth a visit if in this area of Nevada.

Hauntingly scenic, partially decayed adobe buildings on an alluvial fan, with a reconstructed interpretative center, and campgrounds in a riverbottom cottonwood grove. Great desert photography

This is a nice little state park with some interesting history. Visitors Center could use some updating, but this is a nice stop if you're traveling east of Reno. NB: More focus should be given on the indigenous experiences though, especially since this fort was created as a result of colonial encroachment on their lands.

We went as a family with the oldest being 68 and the youngest 3-years old. We went on a Saturday. The park was empty except for us. The temperature was 97Β°! Even though there is very little shade; it wasn't bad at all, heatwise. The history of Fort Churchill is amazing, having been built in the mid-late-ish 1800s. There are still several adobe buildings. They all have an information board in front of each building, telling you what the building was used for. The Carson River runs along the back. We truly enjoyed our time there and will go back.

Old army fort and a stop on the pony express. Small but interesting ruin with good interpretive signage. Much of it was β€œrestored” by Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s so it’s unclear what’s original, but the visitors center has some good information about what life there would’ve been like.

This a a wonderful historical place to visit! The museum is excellent and told the story of the fort very well. The remains of the buildings have been maintained and the trail around the fort is very informative with many signs. I particularly liked the bakery. Close by is the Carson River with a picnic area and a campground. Bring a picnic when you visit!

Excellent experience and nice little museum. Alot of history at this location. Clean restrooms for weary travelers. Very nice picnic location, it's well worth the 3/4 mile side road to access the site.

Fairly typical historic state park telling the story of the troops that served there in the late 1800's. Well done exhibits. All staff were with a kids group when I stopped, so luckily I didn't have any questions or need any assistance.

Such a wonderful piece of history! Will be coming back to this spot soon to camp. The visitor's center is extremely well kept including the bathrooms! (FYI: those buildings get really cold in the winter) The camp sites are easily accessible and clean. Plus there are tons of trails out there to keep yourself occupied.

Went with a group of kids and adults, volunteering their time to clear the trails because of bad weather.

Great, historical place. Amazing views and history. It's a small place, but it's big history wise. It's worth going and seeing it.

😐 Dayton State Park is a lovely little park with a historic background surrounding silver mining in the area. There are only 10 campsites and until Covid-19 hit, you could almost always find a spot. That’s no guarantee now but I suspect visitation will subside over winter with no hookups at the park....

πŸ‘πŸ‘ I visited there on September second. I have been there many times, but this time I had time to explore a little. The rest rooms are clean, they are pit toilets. I visited the garden and wished I could have spent more time there. The pictures are from both areas of the Buckland Station.
