Great interactive experience with lots to see and learn. Utrecht has a very long and interesting history! Infrared laser guns were great fun.

Highly recommended! As a person who knows little about history there was so much interesting to learn. Thanks to our fantastic english speaking guide, this was one of the most fascinating excursions I ever attended.

Rather mediocre experience for the price. While the underground exhibit was creative and had a lot of potential. But it was mostly squandered by the lack of information. Many archaeological finds are still undergoing research to determine what they probably were. It is very unsatisfying to hear "we dont know" from the audio guide multiple times. The staff and guides were friendly and it made for a pleasant but underwhelming experience.

An elderly lady acting like the teacher of a primary school who is there to school you rather than being your tour guide. Imagine you are the last person in a row (you must move in a row most of the times as it is a narrow path towards the exist). An elderly lady standing on your tail so you can't walk back for just a second to look at something you just passed because it was so crowded so you couldnt check it out in the beginning. The lady is telling you "Can you please leave? Another group is coming." and refusing you to go literally 5 steps backwards. While you still wait 5 more minutes to be able to leave the place due to the people infront of you anyways.. But she succeeded on doing her job and enforcing rules, even when it didn't make sense.. Welcome to the Netherlands. The commitment to enforcing the "rules" is on a level that is close to autism, rather than letting people enjoy the experience they paid for. I recommend reconsidering your manner.

Went as a family of 4 with the English tour guide. Utrecht is à beautiful city and Dom under is a must see! A history lesson live. Takes around an hour to do. Staff are very friendly and very knowledgeable.

Fairly interesting to go underground and see what the foundation stones of Romans and gothic churches look like. But I didn't find it too exciting as there was a 20 to 30 minute lecture before going underground. You'll be given a torch and headset for a guided audio tour while underground. The whole visit took about 60 to 90 minutes. Good place to visit if you have time, otherwise you wouldn't miss out on much if you skipped this place.

The explanation before the tour, is interesting, telling the story of Utrecht and the Dom Square. There are two guides - an older guy leading the Dutch speaking group, and a woman leading the English speaking group. The English speaking guide was great and her explanations were interesting, she was good at engaging the group and answering any questions we had. Once the explanation is over you are led to the excavation itself, which is supposed to be the main event, but it's much less interesting than the explanation makes it sound like. It's quite dark, they show a short movie, then give you lamps with an earpiece, you point it at sensors scattered across the room and they play a short audio clip with an explanation. Dutch speaking people get a head start, English speaking people have to wait until after the movie for the headpieces to be set to English. After I got mine I found out it was still in Dutch, so I politely said "excuse me, this is in Dutch". The guide who led the Dutch speaking group was extremely rude and blamed me for it. This ruined the whole experience for me. All in all, I feel like this was an underwhelming experience and I would not recommend it unless you really have nothing better to do. If you go make sure not to interact with the rude guide.

Great insight in the history of Utrecht. Plenty of information, visuals, animations and artifacts to see. Handling the 1.5m distance rules very well.

The guide's dedicated efforts to infuse humor and interactivity into the initial half-hour briefing were evident. While their knowledge was apparent, the session lacked a well-defined structure. This extended verbal exchange didn’t include exploring or viewing artifacts, which diverged from my taste. I favor a more structured approach, valuing concise yet comprehensive narratives that steer clear of redundant content. This initial half-hour occurred in a basement, which seemed disconnected from the tour's theme. The humor sometimes felt awkward, though this might have been due to language nuances. However, my partner appreciated this informal and personal atmosphere, asserting that they found this portion of the tour most enlightening. Had the tour been condensed by half, both in duration and cost and focused more on the subsequent visit to the area beneath the Dom tower, where we could witness ruins and experience the innovative use of sensors to trigger informative audio clips through flashlight activation, I would have been more satisfied. My suggestions for the tour organizers and guides include relocating the introductory session to the spaces between the church's interior and the square behind the Dom Tower. As the provided information mainly pertains to the evolution of this area across different historical periods and their respective ruling authorities, this setting would lend a more authentic backdrop to the narratives. In conclusion, the fundamental elements of the current tour were appreciated. I believe it could become a significantly more appealing experience for tourists interested in archaeology. (My partner and I participated in the English-language tour in July 2023.)

  • 5/5 Maria 1 year ago on Google
Fantastic experience and definitely worth the money. The guide is clearly enthusiastic about the history and the tour with the torchlamp is fun and informative. Don't expect a big room though but what you see is definitely enough to make it worthwhile

Englische Führung mitgemacht. Alles wirkt irgendwie improvisiert.

Went for the smaller Paleis Lofen, the guide was a bit uncertain about things and was way too small for what I expected... Then again, it is an experience, but I'd definitely go for the DOMunder tour next time if i'd reconsider it...

This is a very interesting exhibition with a guided tour, which can teach you about the Roman history of the centre of Utrecht, and the story of the Domkerk and Dom-tower. I would highly recommend this with family or friends on a visit to Utrecht, perhaps in the winter as it is underground anyhow, or to get away from a hot sun (less likely). If you have time, I would also visit the matching attraction and climbing the steps to the top of the Dom-tower for the ultimate historical experience.

  • 3/5 Charlie F. 4 years ago on Google
Loved the guides. They did their part well and were very sincere. As for the tour itself there was nothing really to see. You watch a total of three movies which repeat what the guides already discussed with us at the beginning of the tour. Very disappointing. There is more history to see by taking the Dom Tower tour. Be prepared for all the steps.

Good tour, could have been better. Interesting.

  • 4/5 Jim T. 6 months ago on Google
The first 30 min of the tour was explanation about the history of the Dom. The second part was the walking around the excavated site. The site itself is small and probably won’t excite everybody. But if you are into history, then it is interesting enough.

It's interesting, but the story beforehand is too long and repeats too much info. That's standing still on your feet for half an hour. Please provide seating.

One hour tour below the cathedral, interactive and very interesting to learn about the history of Utrecht from roman times until today passing by the middle ages. English or dutch tours that explain in a different and more direct way what happened and how it happened at the DOM.

First is a 30 minute explaining about the history, very interesting. After that you get a lamp and go to explore the place under the dome. Interesting too.

  • 4/5 Vlad C. 1 year ago on Google
The tour and exhibition and everything is very interesting. The tour guide was also great, however, the only downside in my opinion is the group size, which was too big, making it quite crowded and less easy to see/enjoy things.

  • 5/5 Ikeda T. 1 year ago on Google
I loved the tour! You’ll use a torch to look around in a cave (the path is paved and not a long distance, maybe 10 meter or so). The torch has an earphone and sensor reading attached, if you light a sensor hidden in the cave, you can listen to the audio! The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable about the history

For 10 euros this place is great if you like history and seeing it, about a 1hr 15 to 1hr 30min experience with a history walkthrough, videos to watch, and of course going down and seeing the site Well worth the money, very happy with my experience

  • 4/5 Lim H. 1 year ago on Google
The tour guide was really friendly and explained everything well. He was quite humorous too. The archaeological remains underground was interesting although it felt a bit curated. Would have liked it to be more "authentic". Nevertheless, we did learn more about the history of Utrecht. The underground exploration was relatively short as well.

Utrecht has a rich history spanning 2000 years, and here you get a short, yet good introduction to that history while you can have a look around underground at some of the excavations. Highly recommended! Plenty to do in the area as well.

I was excited to see this place, because I love history. However, I have to admit I was disappointed, because the tour was definitely on the boring side. I think watching one video that would have summed up all the information would’ve sufficed instead of having to watch 3. Also, I’ve been 3 times to the Domtoren and already knew the info that was mentioned during the tour, so keep that in mind that if you’ve visited Domtoren you’ll hear some of the info again during this tour as well.

If you are familiar with Dom Tower at all it will be boring. For €11 'tour' you get: - A xenophobic guide struggling to find words in English - 45 minutes of child-like question time. CaN YoU GuesS HoW maNy PeoPle LivEd HerE? Just tell me. Its not 'interactive fun' and I'm not 7. This could jave easily been a 5min read on the wall, instead we are forced to stand in a small room with nothing to look at, but an adult man showing a stone and a brick. - 3 short movies with same information. Those were pretty funny, because they tried to look as epic as possible with the lowest budget. 2/5 The phrase "There was a man with an unusual hobby of building churches" was my favorite - 30 minute of 'explore the cave with a flashlight'. This could have been the most interesting part. But in the middle of exploring they stop you from whatever you're doing just to put you in the small space and show another badly 3D rendered movie with the same information. - Once you're back to exploring an old man will constantly follow you saying "we're closing soon". So yeah. The most interesting part was ruined by weird movie that we had to watch in between. There was no time to explore at your own pace. Information is repeptitive, and honestly €11 is not worth it to look at the couple of stones. My dissapointment is immeasurable.
