In 1985, during construction work for a residential complex on the “Kästrich” in Mainz's upper town, remains of the walls of the late antique Mogontiacum were discovered. It was a Roman city gate from the 4th century as well as the well-preserved pavement of the street leading through it and parts of the late antique city wall. The structural remains were preserved and integrated into the newly built residential complex as a visible and walkable evidence of Roman Mainz. After the collapse of the Limes in 259/60 AD, the Roman Mogontiacum became a frontline town again. The provincial capital, which had previously been unfortified, had to provide adequate protection, which the Roman troops could no longer provide despite their massive presence there. The first city wall was built. I think Roman history comes to life again here. In the stones you can see the traces of the iron-clad wheels. It's amazing what can still be found today.

Quite hidden in the fine residential complex on the Kästrich lies one of Mainz's archaeological treasures...the Roman Gate. As if in an exposed cellar that you can look down on from just above, there are remains of a city wall built in the post-Roman period. The most interesting detail is the still recognizable passage in the middle of the wall...as wide as two horses' butts, so that teams could fit through. And with the remaining notches for the wagon wheels. And another detail for the cleverness of the builders at the time: the large floor slabs were laid diagonally so that the joints between them ran at an angle to the cars driving over them - and could not damage their wheels. With this knowledge, a fragment of a wall and large stones suddenly become a piece of living history. And while you're on the Kästrich, you shouldn't miss the view of Mainz from the portal-like residential building.

I am thrilled with how history has been integrated into current life and living here. The wall and the lanes allow the history to be present and pique the interest for more. The presentation of the buildings is fantastic and also popular with tourists. Guided tours also come here and, in my opinion, significantly enhance this area.

The gate - or what is still preserved of it - to the old Roman city of Mainz was discovered on the Kupferbergterrasse and made accessible to visitors; it is illuminated at night. It is in the middle of a quiet residential area. I only discovered it by chance. Very few people will be blown away by it, but if you're looking for Roman traces in Mainz and like ancient history, you'll be happy.

It was nice to see this historical landmark that was unearthed during local construction. It is nestled between the buildings and would be easy to miss. It is not protected and there is not much for information at the site. The Roman presence was significant in Mainz, so I would recommend a visit to the Landesmuseum Mainz which has information and objects displayed. Get the audio tour when at the museum.

One of the "hidden" places in Mainz I like very much. Humble but stunning testimony of roman presence and building skills... I strongly recommand

Das römische Stadttor liegt auf der Route unserer Stadtführungen "Im Schatten der Doms" und birgt ein paar sehr interessante und amüsante Geheimnisse 😉

One of many places where you can “stumble” across history in Mainz. The city is simply beautiful!

Eine denkwürdige Stätte, welche jedoch letztlich um ihren Geist gebracht wurde, indem man einen gigantischen Wohnkomplex hingeklatscht hat. In der Subura hätte man nicht schlechter planen können
