It’s a cute set of sculptures with a monkey and two mice. The monkey’s head is hollow. Tourists like to have their pictures taken by standing behind the monkey’s face. The monkey holds a mirror in his hands. It is said that touching the mirror will bring you wealth. If you stroke the outstretched little and index finger of the monkey’s right hand, this means that you are coming back to Heidelberg. If touching the mice next to the monkey, lots of children are predicted. Lol. Such a legend. No wonder the mirror, the fingers and the mice are all so shiny.

Heidelberg monkey is a symbol of ugliness, shamelessness, lechery, and vanity. The monkey is said to be good luck. Rubbing the mirror will bring you money; rubbing his fingers will ensure your return to Heidelberg; and rubbing the little bronze mice nearby will bring you fertility. A plaque with a poem ; (Why are you staring at me?/Haven’t you seen the old monkey of Heidelberg/Look to and fro/There you will find many more of my own kind.) Visitors can have view of Heidelberg Palace on the other side of the river.

You have to touch the monkey’s disk and put your head behind his hands to be blessed with luck 🍀😃

Well, you can fit your head into the sculpture head like a Knight's hat. Be a bit careful though.

Heidelburg is a great city to visit, especially in December. This is our third trip here and we enjoy it more each time. This time we stayed at the Hotel Hollander Hof which was near the Old Bridge and not far from Scholss Heidelburg.

A really nice sculpture next to the old bridge of Heidelberg

Visited Heidelberg Castle on a cruise tour. We had a terrific guide called Thomas who was incredibly knowledgeable and brought the history to life. He showed us the town centre where we had some free time and we visited the old bridge. Loved Heidelberg and any visitors can't fail to be impressed.

When walk along the old bridge, you feel just wandering in a beautiful picture.

The monkey's mirror is supposed to lucky, it is more or less polished from all the rubbing, quite small really but still very original, when I went there the bridge tower was under repair

Cute small statue. It's right at the beginning of the bridge so worth to just stop and check it out. The head part is hollow and many visitors put their head inside to take a photo with it 🙈
