STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE!!!! 5 of us from the US, entered this establishment and got a seated after waiting 20 minutes till somebody finally approached us to takepur order. The waiter approached us without any apology and just took all of our orders. After waiting another 15 min. The waiter came back to our table and told us in German " Since you all didn't order anything to eat, the boss/chef is asking you to leave. You must eat in order to stay here " We were in such disbelief. I have NEVER EVER been asked to leave any establishment, anywhere in this world I have visited. This was utterly disgusting, rude, beyond believe . Just an outrageous unprofessional establishment. Irony is, we all probably would have spend 100-200 Euros on drinks, to enjoy our night there. I'd give zero star if I could, because a business like shouldnt even be allowed to exist after treatment customers/tourists like that. We literally felt embarrassed, unwelcomed. Stay Away!

By far the worst restaurant experience in Heidelberg. Extremely unfriendly service and food was completely un-eatable. The manager was very arrogant and Please avoid at all cost

From the first moment I walked into the place, the waitresses saw me like I was different ( 'cause I am mestiza ? ) Next my partner ( he was white american ) said, " we want to eat ", fortunately he saw what I saw, and felt what I felt. Two people having issues ? I dont think so ( to the owner ) The food was good. The place is a traditional German restaurant.

I have lived in Germany for almost 2 years and have traveled to numerous countries throughout Europe. The meal I had at the Red Ox is by far the best I have enjoyed thus far. Moreover, I have visited many classy restaurants back in the US as well: New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, Atlanta, Boston, Santa Barbara, Dallas-Ft Worth, and Seattle. The Red Ox in Heidelberg, DE far surpasses any of these. The staff were very friendly and sociable, the aesthetics and overall atmosphere was pleasant and again, the meal was phenomenal. I highly recommend anyone living/traveling in the Rheinland-Pfalz area make a trek to this fine establishment - it will not disappoint; Heidelberg is worth the visit as well. Kudos guys and thanks for one of the highlights of time in your homeland. Many thanks!

Incredible service and delicious food! I am shocked this place doesn’t have more reviews. It’s on a back street away from the crowds. The dining room is very charming and authentic old Heidelberg. It’s family owned and operated. It was quiet enough to enjoy our conversation but had a great ambiance. A love piano player arrived about 7pm on a Friday. It was lovely but not too loud. Our food was great and all the dishes around us also looked sensational. Very generous wine pours. Our server spoke English and was really helpful. A great gem!!!

Great old pub style restaurant. The interior is amazing and each wall is covered in pictures, horns, cups. We had the dark lager which was really tasty. The food was good and the staff were friendly. Great place for an evening in Heidelberg.

Fantastic restaurant with very friendly staff. The service was great and the food as well. The menu is short, but what they offer is delicious. The interior is very different, with old tables, carved with initials and names. Live piano music as well. I have been to Heidelberg many times but this was my first visit. I will come back for sure.

Everyone can have an off evening I understand that. 42 years ago I visited Heidelberg with my father for the castle illumination and he made it a point for us to visit the red ox and have a beer together. He has passed 24 years. Today I was able to bring my mother and wife to Heidelberg for the castle illumination and to commemorate a beer for my father. As we walked in at 8:30 we told them we just wanted a beer. We were rudely told it was a restaurant and served food. They did ALLOW us to sit at a table. We sat for a few minutes and decided that things do change, and we would not bother them and left. There was no line; it was 8:30 and the street was clear as we left. Hopefully this was just an off night for them. If not, iit is a shame.

Great German fare, and the staff has been great the two times we have visited. The place also has some history, and you'll find yourself walking around looking at all the steins and pictures.

Noisy and popular. Grumpy old man server. Ladies room not stocked with paper all evening. No drink menu offered. Beef consume and apple strudel were delightful.

Very nice and stylish restaurant that exists more than 300 years. Food is local, quite tasty. Portion really big. Good local beer. Piano player jamming all night makes it even moře interesting. I do totally recommend this place.

What a fantastic spot. The atmosphere was perfect; with old hunting trophies on the walls, Steins on display and tons of pictures adorning the walls. The food was absolutely delicious! I had the braised Ox-Cheeks. One of the best meals I've had in a long time, hands down!! The meat was delicious and tender, the dumplings were the perfect consistency and texture (not over cooked or gummy). The cabbage was really delightful as well. All in all, I have zero bad things to say; food was great, beer was cold, wine was nice, and the prices are reasonable for such a delicious meal. Staff were nice as well. I came in quite late for food (by German standards) and they were still very accommodating. Even though the staff spoke english, I've been trying to practice my German and the lady was very patient with me. For sure this is a GO-TO while in Heidelberg!

Nice cozy restaurant. Their famous dish has a strong taste of mustard. Many people seem to like it. How ever if you dislike mustard you will definitely not like it.

Run by the 6th generation of the same family this restaurant offers a small menu of good quality dishes at reasonable prices. The place is full of memorabilia in an traditional German building in the old town of Heidelberg.

Lovely place! Typical gasthaus / brown cafe atmosphere. Busy and joyful. Food was really good. I had the rump steak, really good quality. Rest of the table happy too. Service was friendly, attentive and fast.
