I took both the Sydney Sights and The Rocks tours and if you had a day to spend in the city, I'd highly suggest that you do both. Kieran, our guide, is very well versed with the city's history. He gave context to the various interesting spots around the city. Trivia made the narrative more interesting. This is what a walking tour should be. Bring your most comfortable pair of shoes and enjoy Sydney!

Awesome tour! Very informative and the guide was great. I recommend it being the first thing you do when you arrive!! After you you have some helpful info and bearings. Visited the top tourists spots and a beautiful walk through the city, last with a awesome view of the bridge and and the Opera House. She gave some great tips and tricks. Please tip! It is free but they work off of trips the tour was worth it. There was 20 in our group but only 5 people tipped including us it was frustrating to watch. Also if you're up for it, the tour ends at the bridge, we walked across the bridge to Luna Park and caught the ferry back. A lot of walking but worth it!

We booked a tour with this company for the second day we were in Sydney. The group was easy to find and check-in. Leo, from Bondi Beach, was our guide. He was great at talking loud, knowledgeable about everything Sydney, and fun to listen to. This tour is a good 2+ hours of walking ALL around Sydney. It gives you a great outline of the different areas and neighborhoods and tons of ideas of where you'll want to visit. I think we had about 25/30 people, so not too huge. You could always be near enough to hear Leo. He also was very good at finding dry places for us to stand in the few moments of rain showers that we had. We also had a little break where you could get a coffee or snack or use the restrooms. The tour ended at the Sydney Bridge which was great for pictures. It also was very close to the Rocks - a cool neighborhood where there was a large outdoor market going on. We visited the market then ducked into Pancakes on the Rocks and had an awesome lunch! I highly recommend these tours if you're new to Sydney and want to get a general basis of where everything is and some of the history and fun facts of the city. We loved the "secret bars." We visited several - we hadn't heard of those before.

Duration about 3 hours. Although you are on your feet the whole time the walking is leisurely. There are a few steps and a couple of hills but very gentle given it’s Sydney. The tour was interesting and our guide was energetic, friendly, patient and spoke clearly. Most people were tipping $15 to $20 dollars. Enjoyable and well worth the time.

I had the opportunity of doing the Sydney Sights walk with Aida a few weeks ago. She was very passionate and knowledgeable, showing us a lot of attractions in an optimal amount of time (not too short or too long). I would only make two observations (and please regard them as suggestions/comments rather than criticisms): 1. During the tour we passed through Hyde Park and while Aida pointed out St Mary's Cathedral and the Archibald Fountain, we didn't see the ANZAC War Memorial. Given its significance celebrating human self-sacrifice it may be an idea to incorporate it in the tour, or at least give it a mention when passing through the area. The same could go for the Captain Cook statue. 2. When discussing the relationship between the Aborigines and the English settlers, Aida tended to focus only on the negatives. amongst other things mentioning that at times the aim of the British, through various policies, was to try and make the Indigenous peoples extinct. Whilst we do have to acknowledge that Aborigines weren't always treated fairly we must not fall into the trap of promoting only the 'Black armband view' of history or making all non-Indigenous people feel guilty as a collective. For the sake of balance It would be helpful if your tour leaders also mentioned examples where the British did try to treat the Aborigines with humanity, for example Arthur Phillip not seeking revenge after he was speared (and generally attempting to behave respectfully towards them) or when as part of the 'Stolen Generation' a number of Indigenous children were removed as their parents couldn't adequately take care of them (not discounting the fact that other children were indeed removed under the policy objective of forced assimilation). Apat from the above comments, a great tour - thanks again Aida!

I aim to do free walking tours in any city I visit as they are flush with great tips, interesting historical facts and other travellers. This tour with Scott did not disappoint. It was interesting, busy and well paced. My only criticism would be that the 10 minute break isn't enough time to use the bathroom and get food or a snack as the queues in the location we stopped were very long.

Absolutely worth doing the city tour. Owen was a great tour guide and told many stories and infos about the city, sights, culture and history. Easy with a kid, too (+plus stroller). Tour takes you to all nice places north of Chinatown including the Rocks and Circular Quay. Thanks!

I highly recommend you do this tour if you are coming to visit Sydney. It is a great way to get to know the history of the city. Owen, our tour guide was knowledgeable, informative, funny, engaging and friendly. It was a fun way to meet other people who are also visiting the city.

We would like to show our immense appreciation and gratitude to our I’m Free tour guide, Paul, for showing us around Sydney on the morning of 15th July 2023! He’s an amazing and expressive tour guide that makes Australia’s history fun and he often shares memorable stories of each location with his good sense of humour which we still remember till this day. Initially, we were slightly intimidated by the 3 hour tour duration but in hindsight, it was a well paced tour with a short 15 min break halfway through. Group was slightly large (25-30 people turned up at the initial location) but the group was luckily split into two evenly. Paul made an effort to engage with every single person on the tour with small talks. Tips on how to explore Sydney were appreciated as it really came into handy as well. Overall, this tour is strongly recommended to all new and returning travellers of Sydney, especially on their first or second day of their trip! ☺️🥳👍 Keep up the very good work!

Excellent, enjoyable, informative and incredible value! These guys are so good at what they do, the groups aren't big at all. There's plenty of chances to ask questions, there's a pit stop halfway round for a break and liquid refreshment. Suits those that are able to walk for about 3 hours and there isn't anything strenuous.

TLDR; Exceptional Sydney Free Walking Tour: A Must-Do for New Visitors Seeking City Highlights The Sydney Free Walking Tour proved to be a phenomenal experience, providing an essential introduction to the city's best spots for newcomers. One of the highlights of this tour is its "try before you buy" approach, allowing you to pay what you think the experience is worth, ensuring exceptional value for all participants. Lasting just under three hours, the tour also includes a convenient break for restrooms and snack opportunities. Despite encountering rainy weather, the tour remained engaging and thoroughly enjoyable. The enthusiasm of our knowledgeable guide, who expertly projected his voice for all to hear, kept the entire group captivated throughout the journey. This tour is undoubtedly a must for anyone eager to explore the wonders of Sydney while gaining valuable insights, a sense of direction, and an unbeatable value-for-money experience.

Must do this on your first few days of visit to start your trip with this awesome tour. Special thanks to OWEN our friendly and fun loving guide who made this tour a fun experience of my whole trip).

Owen was our walking tour guide. He was witty, friendly, inviting, informative, and easily understood. I would recommend this tour to any other first-timers in Sydney for an amazing introduction to the city and a way to get your legs moving. We learned about the city (and country) history and hit a bunch of important sculptures, buildings, etc in about 2.5 hours time.

Scott was my guide for the day and The Rocks tour. He was a great guide which is why I'm calling him out by name. Definitely worthwhile to get the lay of the city when it's your first time in Sydney. Scott's humor really makes it memorable. Thanks Scott!

We had a great walking tour with Paul today. It was our first day in Sydney. After the tour we felt like we got to know the city like a local. Paul gave us so many tips about the city. It was fun touring the city with a him.

I did both the Sydney Sights tour (with Kieran), and The Rocks tour (with Owen). It would be best to do these 2 tours at the beginning of your holidays, as you would get a brief key summary of each main place of interest (POI). You can go back to the POI after the tour if you are keen to explore more. Both guides are equally engaging and friendly. They would love to have people come up to them to banter with them while walking. Even though the tour is “free”, it would be nice to tip them (no matter how much), as they spent their precious time walking with us, showing us around and sharing their tips & knowledge 😊 they accept both cash and contactless, so don’t have to be stressed about breaking your big notes into smaller ones 😂

We were recommended the tour by locals and tourists alike- we also highly recommend. Scott is a brilliant tour guide, he took us on a route through the rocks at sunset, sharing entertaining and informative stories along the way. We saw many iconic and historical sites, and particularly enjoyed seeing the Harbour Bridge from Observatory Hill, the Opera House and the historical buildings in the area. Thanks for a fantastic introduction to the city, Scott.

Our tour guide Leo was interesting , entertaining and knowledgeable. The sights and information shared was most valuable and gave us a great idea of which places we wanted to come back to and explore more. The group was quite big but Leo did a great job of keeping us all together and making sure every one could here. 100% recommend this tour!

Went for the rocks tour tonight with Scott. It’s a wet Saturday with just a small handful. It’s an interesting tour from the waterfront to the hilltop. It ended near a couple of historical pubs for you to take your pick or to just head elsewhere. Got to learn of different ancient personalities with colourful histories. Some are more tragic than others. Sign up to find out more !

I have been to both tours - around the city and the rocks area. Both are very informative and interesting. The only moment about day time 3 hour tour - I didn't like the place where we stopped for a break. It doesn't really have much rather than toilets. So better take some snacks with you in case you get hungry.

I travelled to Sydney for just 2 days from Melbourne, and was staying in a hostel close to town hall. After landing very early in the morning, I saw a brochure for "I am Free" tours nearby and decided to go for it since it was free. Doing this walk was indeed an excellent decision as it provided a context for the remainder of my trip to Sydney, as I could absorb the history, architecture knowing what I am seeing rather than just photographing the beautiful buildings. The guides have a very well-thought out route where they make sure to cover the things of most interest, and give sufficient breaks to prevent heat-stroke or exhaustion. I was in Ada's tour group, and she was very well informed about the country's history, and in particular the city's history and how each of the things we were seeing came to be, what relevance they had and continue to have. The tour started from next to Queen Victoria Building (QVB) and St. Andrew's Church, and covered multiple interesting sights such as Town Hall, Hyde Park Barracks, the beautiful St. Mary's Cathedral, The Rocks and ending in Circular Quay outside Opera house/ Harbour bridge. She was very informative in even talking about statues outside the buildings, the hospitals and libraries from British colonial times and it made me appreciate the city a lot. We even walked through some artistic streets as well as a lot of aboriginal folk cultural buildings and artifacts. I wanted to do Rocks "I am Free" walks too, but couldn't make it in time unfortunately. Overall I'd strongly recommend doing it, sticking through the end and tipping your wonderful tour guide who only get paid with these tips.

We had a tour of Sydney city with Ross today. We’ve lived in Sydney for 20 years but we learned a lot of things today about the city we thought we knew! Ross was so lovely to talk to and was interested in us too! I would highly recommend “I’m free” tours to anyone from overseas visitors (when they’re allowed back in!) to locals. 3 ¼ hours of entertainment. Thank you Ross

What a lovely time we had! Just the perfect idea for our first day out in Sydney. A great itinerary from Town Hall up to Circular Bay, with plenty of tips and hidden secrets that only a local can provide.

Aida, our guide, for the morning tour through Sydney was great. Her commentry never faltered in 3 hours as she explained facts (and fun stories) of cultural and historical significance while we walked from the Town Hall to the Harbour Bridge. She also passed on a lot of tips on how to make your time easier and more enjoyable whilst in Sydney. It's an easy walk and thoroughly recommend for anyone with a pair of walking shoes and 3 hours to spare.

Just did the tour today. It was a great experience. A quick way to learn about the city of Melbourne - its fascinating and rich history, its culture and its hidden life. All of this was done in just a couple of hours of walking with a friendly and knowledgeable 'I'm Free Tours guide'. Highly recommended to those visiting Melbourne and indeed those live locally who want to know more about Melbourne. I've been in Melbourne for some time but the tour gave me some deep knowledge of the city and fall in love with it once more!

Well this walking tour was one of our best tours. We took the rocks tour in Sydney and Scott our guide was superb. It was a very informative interactive and full of humor too. Got to know lot of history about the Rocks. Loved it overall. Big Thumbs up to Scott. Highly recommended. Also don't forget to tip then it works on tip bases and whatever u feel like u can pay at the end of the trip. Its really worth it

The guide was friendly and interesting! I highly recommend this tour for people who are coming to Sydney and want to see the best places and meet new people. You have a 10 minutes break in the middle for toilets, you can buy some food and in the end you give some tip for the guide. (with cash or card)

  • 5/5 Fabian M. 1 year ago on Google
Amazing tour by Scott! The tips he gave as someone living here were especially valuable and spot on for the places I tried because of it. So while the tour is probably pretty standard (and still well run obviously), these little things he says around it are what you should look out for. This is also why I'd recommend doing the tour as early as possible during your stay to make use of these tips! He also took on people that did not have a booking but you should not count on this and always book in advance.

Scott have us an amazing tour of the rocks. He brought the history to life with great stories and funny jokes. I would highly recommend him as a tour guide

Our tour guide Scott did an amazing job telling us about the history as well as some fun facts of the city. It helped understanding the culture and aspects of this "young" city and the human living in it a little more and gave a great insight. Thanks for your time and dedication, it has been a great tour!

  • 5/5 Markus P. 1 year ago on Google
We did both tours (Day tour and The Rocks) and liked them really. Good amount of information with the right portion of humor made it a really nice way to explore the city. Our guide Scott did a fantastic job! I also like the concept of the team to make tours affordable for everyone as pay-what-you-want model.

Just did the tour today. A great way to learn about the Rocks, Sydney. It was explained in a very interesting detail by Ross. The history of the first immigration from Europe and how they survived and the building history was explained in great detail. Enjoyed it thoroughly.

  • 5/5 James B. 1 year ago on Google
Great intro to the city of Sydney. Our tour guide Scott was energetic and ready to answer all our questions. The walk was about 2 miles but plenty of rest breaks were built in to sit and heed the call of Mother Nature.

  • 5/5 Imahn M. 4 years ago on Google
Would definitely recommend. You get to see a lot of downtown Sydney away from the opera house and waterfront (still ends in Circular Quay). Tour was about 3 hours with only about the last 40 minutes in the Rocks and Circular Quay areas, which is great if you’ve already done a Opera House tour and/or Harbor Bridge Climb. Great overview of the rest of downtown. And it’s “free”! Tour guides are not paid, so consider donating what you would consider a solid 3 hour tour to be worth and your personal circumstances. Seemed like most people were giving about $5-$20 per person, and I think even at the upper end it was well worth it.

  • 5/5 Brian O. 1 year ago on Google
Scott did an incredible job. This is the single best walking tour I’ve come across. Love the jokes, the way all the stories tie together and the ‘audience participation’ parts. Expertly designed, expertly delivered. Well done!
