I don't often write reviews, but I feel the need to write this one so that no one else has to endure the situation I found myself in. The room was absolute rubbish, with none of the appliances working, a broken window lock that let in constant construction noise from nearby, and excessive dust. Their escalator only goes down halfway some of the time, which isn't bad if you fancy that 'final destination' thrill. Speaking of final destinations, this will indeed be the last time I visit this hotel. STAY AWAY.

Room was no better than a prison cell. Very very basic. Bed got remade on morning 2 but no stock up of tea bags, or emptying of bin. Noisy hotel all night - hotel noise. Window didn't close. Curtains didn't block out much light so room was hard to sleep in. Awful mould in shower. Location is great though.

Just left this place five minutes ago after being ignored like I was invisible despite being well dressed in a suit just coming from a speaking engagement with my brother who was dressed the same. I didn’t catch the names but there was a gentleman with an Asian background and a blonde haired gal who repeatedly ignored us and served people repeatedly that came in behind us. Honestly we felt insulted so we walked out! I’ve traveled to over 70 countries and never experienced this. We actually came in to go to the scotch bar upstairs but it was closed, big mistake I’m coming to this smaller place and I don’t recommend it to anyone despite the place looking great with a historic atmosphere!

Despite the presence of an electric fan, the lack of air conditioning in the room made it difficult for me to sleep during my stay in the summer. Additionally, the location of the hotel is quite noisy, with a persistent machinery sound emanating from the street throughout the night. Finally, it's worth noting that the hotel does not have a receptionist available on weekend mornings, which could make it challenging for guests to check out early or store their luggage. Given the price I paid for my stay, I was disappointed with these shortcomings and cannot recommend the hotel.

We went for one drink tonight after a meal in Tottis and I have never met a bartender so rude in my life the girl with the long brown hair. I’m not one to write bad reviews on businesses but upon serving us she acted as if we had personally offended us. As my friends and I walked out she then proceeded to say we (as Irish) are so rude. Bear in mind we had not done anything, we sat down and had one drink and then left because we felt uncomfortable. I’m sorry but this service is simply unacceptable and frankly quite racist.

Was very dissatisfied with the service we received here. Very rude female staff working behind the bar, it took 10 minutes to get a drink in a virtually empty place and we felt uncomfortable the entire time we were there. We ended up leaving the bar without finishing our drinks and we will absolutely not be returning. Would highly recommend to avoid this place.

Amazing friendly atmosphere FULL marks to Lawrence and Nikki, I was made really welcome (whilst being 11,000 miles from home) ... The Beef / Guinness pie and mash is superb..... do you deliver to England ? 🤣🤣😂 nice room, bar downstairs. Highly recommended.

Our experience was great. The Grand is centrally located with an easy walk to the Wynyard train station - convenient if you take the train from Sydney airport. It's very close to Circular Quay, the Rocks, and a 2 min walk to George Street which takes you to the centre of the city. All the staff we encountered were friendly and helpful. Ruddy, the manager is just awesome. I highly recommend this place if you're looking for a cheap place to stay. Just remember that it is an old building with old rooms, with that old building smell but the beds, rooms, bathrooms are very clean, and there is an iron and ironing board in the hallway if you need one. Also, remember to press the button on your door when you leave the room so that it locks.

Value for money. I found it a comfortable place to stay. It’s a pub , so don’t expect a hotel accommodation. Well located for city sights. Bit noisy, but again, you are in the middle of the city, on a pub. Interesting elevators Baths in bathrooms. Keys pickup from from bar, which is busy Friendly check in and staff

I recently stayed at The Grand Hotel for a work trip as it was the only place available at such short notice. It's pub accommodation, and for that it's quite good for what it is. The building is an older renovation for the most part, and the shared bathrooms are clearly leftover from a time where that was common, but it gave me the best shower I have ever had from a hotel - I suspect because it was old enough to get around the water efficiency regulations that exist today. The only downside was that the TV in room 47 didn't work the one time I tried it. This wasn't a big deal though, as I was able to stream what I wanted to watch on my laptop using the free WiFi.

Great simplicity, when all you need is a room to sleep, down stairs the grand hotel bar is really busy on a Thursday and friday afternoon from about 3pm onwards, the only down side to this experience was the 100 year old lift (still better than walking up stairs) and cleanliness in the room could be better, floors where dirty, sink was blocked, but I feel these are minor things when you weigh up location ( great location ) and cost. I do recommend grand hotel

The service was below average. I asked for a Jameson neat and was told I could only get it watered down on the rocks. I assume this is due to some previous caution with drunk patrons. Next, I notified them of the bathroom leaking and they just nodded and went on their way. There was no soap to wash hands with either. This place is a mess.

First time visiting as a Friday evening local office worker. Caitlin had the bar rocking and was and absolute boss managing a busy bar whilst training a new starter Nikki. Google review capped out at 5 stars but I'd give it a 6 as the wait staff rocked it 🤙

Great location, close to Circular Quay. Great local clientele. Staff are awesome. Small older style Sydney pub with lots of character. Will stay there again.

It was fairly underwhelming this place. The housing is actually decent and affordable and the bar is nice but the service is lacklustre and the food was, well meh. For a hotel this location is fine. And it is located in the city which is nice. But the service is poor. I ordered food at the pub area and despite being the only one there, I was served 40 minutes after ordering. The food quality was nothing exceptional but not bad. But the food prices are expensive for the portion that you get. I would rate it 3.5 if I could.

After my partner’s sudden death, I needed to “budget”. I’m ok with backpacker level, but The Grand has dignified ‘class’. I recommend it 110%, but please, save me a room for my variable visits from Newcastle for theatre. See you in the bar for a drink… you’ll enjoy the vibe! Steve 🤗

Ok keep in mind that this is "pub style" accomodations. So i rated it according to level. Room was small but clean. Everything works fine. Shared restroom and shover clean. No air conditioner. Stuff is helpful and friendly. It is old building, but location is nice. So a long as your expectations are proper, this is good place to stay for a night before cruise

The food... my god, do ur self a favour and get the chicken tenders... heaven on earth... The staff make it all seem so easy, which is exactly how it should feel when you're spending your $$$. You can get a beautiful French rose at a very approachable price. 10/10 a rating not given lightly.

This is a pub accommodation so keep in mind that the rooms are located from level 3 after two bars, a casino and two restaurants. There are no lifts so keep this in mind if you have large suitcases. The rooms smell like mould and I believe it's because of how old the building is, the lack of maintenance and the fact that there is no air conditioning. The bed and towels seemed clean but we still used our own. The toilets and showers are shared and therefore they were always smelly and dirty, the only thing you have in the room is a sink to wash your hands or teeth. The staff is friendly and you get 10% off your drinks. The best thing about this place is the location, quite close to Circular Quay and light train station that takes you to Chinatown, Haymarket, central railway station and many other tourist attractions.

Great place for a beer after work. Not massive but a solid selection of mainstream beer. Tiana is a great bar tender who genuinely provides great service with a smile. I will be back.

Very average. The place needs maintenance urgently. You can hear different sounds from everywhere (fridge, aircon, water, street, etc.). Also, the staff wasn’t friendly. I would not recommend.

Such a great location and price for those experiencing the downfalls of post Covid cost of living - thanks so much team for being so accomodating and friendly to us on our gals night out! 👍🏻 The Grand has become our go-to place to rest our heads after a night out in the city. So Close to wynyard station and the light rail for the trip home in the morning ….

The emplacement was very good but the room was so disgusting we found under the bed jam receipt êtc that means no one did under the bed for a while plus the rest in addition to the carpet smell no comment.

It's a pub I guess so you expect the olde worlde experience of having to go down the hall to take a piss. The food and service in the bar however were excellent.

This review it’s all about the Bar downstairs. It is my favorite place when I visit Sydney. Small and cozy place. Very good service e and cheaper beer compared to many places around. Just walk away when the bossy “far bald and racist” manager is attending the bar. He gives very different service depending on the race. I have seen him several times and always the same. At the end another “powerful bartender” I don’t post pictures for respect but you will know who he is

Visited Sydney from adelaide with my family who came from overseas. We booked 2 rooms. Rooms were old smelly no air condition, full of dust not cleaned as per standard. Main thing is we didn't felt safe, our both rooms were wide open with lights on whole day till when we were back at 9.30pm since morning. We felt embarrassed in front of our parents from overseas Australiain hotel is this low with saftey issue. We complained manger but they were not aware of it, she pointed out mistake to morning cleaners. Whoever it was its not our problem our valuables were left in room trusting hotel, luckily nothing were missing but rooms were not cleaned though was as it is. Manager James offered a dinner on the house food was good though. Hats off to chef. Manager also offered refund for that night but they didn't bother to refund till now been waiting so I had to write a review. Lift is manual door may be from 16th century bit scary. Will never recommend to anyone ever. But I will recommend food there.

Service and location was ok i guess But the rooms are in terrible condition. My friend had an allergic reaction from all that dust. Do they even clean the carpets? It's reallllllly dirty. Would not come back again. Lifts are also so old you have to manually open da doors and they are indeed sooooo heavy

Was there last night (Friday). Your staff are excellent, as was the pub food. That and not being drowned out by loud music made it a really good casual venue.

  • 3/5 Evina S. 3 years ago on Google
For the budget price for stay, the room was pleasing enough for one night. Comfort level was ok, sheets were clean and room tidy but unfortunately only hot water in the room sink was available and no milk for hot beverages available in mini fridge. However, the lady who checked us in was friendly and polite and so were the other staff.

I stayed there for just one night, the room I went to had no power outlet, which seems like a basic thing that would be in each room, then there was a small blood stain on the duvet which made me feel ill. Don’t get me started on the white bathroom towels in the rooms. I told staff about it and they moved me to another room, but to get to this room you have to go down dark corridors and a fire escape, and I honestly felt scared in the night to leave and go to the bathroom. I didn’t actually use the bathroom at all while here cos it was so dark and dingy and the place just has a scary feel, especially as a single female. I wouldn’t book again based on the cleaning standards and the vibe here. It’s a cheap enough room ($60 for one night) but I’d much rather pay the extra and have a comfortable stay.

  • 2/5 Sarah Z. 2 years ago on Google
We checked in shortly after 2 PM which was easily done at the bar. When in our room it had not been changed over and was dirty from the previous tenants, so we had to wait an hour in the hall while the housekeeping changes the sheets towels etc. During our stay when the room was checked for house keeping the staff entered our room and then did not lock it twice, leaving our room open until we returned home at the night time, which felt unsafe for us. The noise is significant but closing the window did help. This is a cheap stay in the CBD but spending a few dollars more may improve your comfort.

Nice old fashioned pub. We don’t have many of these left so walk right in. It’s good to see we still have the old style pubs left in Sydney city. I had the ‘Riverina Angus Sirloin’ steak, chips, salad and mushroom gravy with cold beers. It was comforting, relaxing and I’ve enjoyed the experience. For these reasons I give this 3 bears.

My father, my girlfriend and I went to the bar for a beer. While they went to the bathroom, a woman and two patrons started to grab at my dad’s chair, I told them the chair was taken, then the woman started telling me aggressively to hand over my dads backpack which was under his chair while continuously grabbing at it. Not understanding why some random woman and two men would be aggressively trying to touch my property I told them multiple times to leave me and the backpack alone as it was my dads. Refusing to listen and getting aggressive at me I FIRMLY told them to go away, and as my father came back the women grabbed him and prevented him from sitting down claiming it was the two mens lost backpack they think we stole. This escalated verbally at which point the lady and men were abusing us telling us the lady was actually a member of staff and accusing us of being drunk and disorderly/violent. The men (random patrons) continued to verbally abuse me while the lady told management who asked us to leave, of course with his bar bouncer standing over us. My dad was able to convince him to allow us to finish our beers first before we were booted. The bar lady servicing us was apologetic. Seems though there are some very immature and unprofessional staff working there. In no world would I think some random lady and two men putting hand on me and my property to actually be a customer service member. A total joke, and that staff member needs an attitude adjustment.

Tried contacting the Hotel to inform them that we had to cancel our booking through wotif. Didn’t answer the phone. Rang on the day of our booking, didn’t answer the phone. Spoke with a wotif representative to cancel our stay due to family members having Covid, they tried calling the hotel and they didn’t answer. Just received an email from Wotif stating that they have tried contacting the hotel on a number of occasions and no one has answered. They also mentioned that I the hotel has strict policies about refunds etc so I lose $157. Absolutely pathetic! Wonder what your policy is on answering ya phones????

What ab excellent way to end a morning meeting (or strike)... Rooms everywhere, simple ordering system using QR code on your table, very accommodating for the princess garlic pants present, not so noisy that you couldn't hold a decent volume of conversation, and super friendly staff, all within walking distance of Martin place. Old world charm, good range of meals and they even sell beer!
