Such an enjoyable experience! The Cloakroom is a genuine speakeasy (with the hidden door and all) with incredible drinks and an even more incredible staff!!! The experience of not having a menu and having a bartender create a drink feels so intimate and fun! You tell them the base alcohol you like, and they ask you flavour / ingredient questions and bring you a personalized drink! We got served my Bradley (aka Brandon) and Ollie. Such great bartenders. Easy to chat and laugh with. They really made our night there a memorable one. The vibes are incredibly moody and dark, but in a good way! Not to mention the temperature in there was just so comfortable. There aren’t too many seats (which adds to the vibes), so you might have to wait a little, but it’s DEFINITELY worth your wait. Overall 12/10. Definitely going back soon!

Quirky Speakeasy Vibe, Variable Mixed Drink Experience at Cloakroom Bar During my recent visit to Cloakroom Bar, a popular speakeasy in Montreal, I encountered a mixed bag of experiences. While the quirky interior and cozy ambiance added charm to the place, the drink offerings left something to be desired. Let's start with the positive aspects. The interior of Cloakroom Bar exudes an intimate and cozy atmosphere, perfect for a unique night out. The small space adds to the speakeasy vibe, creating an exclusive feel. However, it's worth noting that due to limited seating, it's advisable to arrive early to secure a comfortable spot. The bench seating is better suited for a couple or a small group, so keep that in mind when planning your visit. Moving on to the drinks, I found them to be a bit hit-or-miss. The bartenders at Cloakroom Bar will ask for your preferences and create a concoction based on your input. Unfortunately, my experience with this approach was underwhelming. When I requested a gin and dry, the resulting drink tasted unlike a typical gin and leaned towards the sweeter side, which was not to my liking. Even when I asked for a twist on a gin and tonic, I was disappointed by the outcome, finding it rather unappealing. It's important to note that taste preferences can vary, and my experience might not necessarily reflect the overall quality of the drinks at Cloakroom Bar. However, based on my personal encounter, I found the beverage offerings to be lacking consistency and falling short of my expectations. In conclusion, Cloakroom Bar offers a quirky speakeasy atmosphere with its small and cozy interior, but the drink experience left much to be desired during my visit. The bartenders' attempts to tailor drinks to individual preferences didn't quite hit the mark for me. If you do plan to visit, I would recommend going early to secure a suitable seating arrangement and keeping an open mind when it comes to the drink selections.

There’s only 25 seats so you will probably wait. We didn’t wait too long. When you get seated, the server comes and asks you three questions: your spirit of choice, whether you like it spirit forward, and whether you want something herbal, refreshing or fruity. A few minutes later a drink appears. Mine was delicious. It’s a super cool space and concept, but obviously expensive. 4 drinks cost is $98.

Small, exclusive speakeasy in Montreal. If you come with a bigger group, be prepared to wait for awhile as they only have 25 seats. The main draw here is the atmosphere as the dark and intimate vibes make this a pretty cool experience. They don't have a menu and you tell the bartender what you like. While interesting on paper, my drink was not what I expected. I asked for something rum-based, sweet and "pretty" but it came out looking like what the rest of my group got. The bitterness of the grapefruit he added also threw me off. Honestly I enjoyed the starter rye drink the most. I didn't like the customized drink and left after a round.

No menu, the bartender asks what flavours you like and will tailor a drink to you. They do work with a shadow menu and hidden guidelines on how to do this, so there's always some consistency. The drinks and spirits were high quality and had some nice twists. Used quite a few bitters to get the interesting flavours. The space is well designed. Small and intimate, but mirrors make it seem much larger. Our bartender on the night was very young, but talented, having worked also in Hong Kong and Singapore already.

What an amazing and different place! Since the moment you enter it's unique! For sure it is a new experience order without a menu but they nailed it! We had a gin and a rhum cocktail and they were extraordinary! The staff is incredible, so warm and welcome! Excellent customer service! For sure it is a place to try!

Cute speakeasy, small and intimate (25 people). Reminds me of Atwater cocktail club but more velvet seats on the banquette type of vibe. There are also 1 or 2 little more private rooms. Great for a date. No drinks menu, it's one of those, "what do you like, we'll make it for you" which is always fun but not necessarily always successful, but it's not off the mark either. Service was good though could be a little nicer. We came in, we were 2 but were told if a bigger group comes they will move us. Ultimately nobody else came so it was fine but kind of a turn off to start the night. Waiters were professional but not personable, not stand-off or anything but just not as warm of an experience as I've had at all the other speakeasies I've been to.

Great speakeasy. To enter, you wait outside a false door next to a staircase (don't go up). No menu, the bartender is great at creating something you will like. We asked both for something crafted from answering questions on flavor profiles, and for spins on traditional drinks. He delivered great drinks for both. Very unique drinks with interesting flavors you don't usually get. It's a small place, we arrived at opening (it was empty) and in 20 minutes it was already at capacity. Arrive early!

I stopped in here for some AMAZING cocktails the other night. I've historically been a beer man, but I will definitely be checking out more cocktails in the future. You describe the spirit you want and the flavor profile you would like, and they create a tasty drink just for you. Absolutely delicious. The drinks are strong, but don't taste like alcohol. After three of them I was feeling no pain. Our server was charming, friendly and attentive. Definitely a great experience!. Thank you Cloakroom!

Came to the cloakroom for the first time last week. Seemed pretty interesting and great service. The darkness was nice as if sets the mood. The speakeasy is small so expect a wait. It was interesting to be asked a few questions and have drinks made according to preferences but it was pretty obvious that they had set combinations to make the drinks. Only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is because there is no menu indicating any price. When it came to tax and tip, it ended up being $50 for two drinks which is pretty high for what was given.

A little speak easy tucked behind a wall and offers a very unique experience in a cozy atmosphere. The concept is really cool where there is no drink menu and bartenders create a drink for you based on questions/answers you provide to the server. Bartenders did a great job of blending together different flavours to make specialized cocktails. Drinks were fairly priced. Given small space, it filled up quickly so would recommend arriving within 15-20 mins of opening to avoid waiting. Would recommend trying out and we’ll be back!

Nice spot. Drinks are pretty good although it depends as well who you fall on. Some guys are better than others at making personalized drinks. Overall is a small bar but very nice. A lot of couples as is more of a romantic vibe. Verdict : give it a try.

Amazing, unique, individual cocktails at The Cloakroom Bar. We got the last availability (arrived around 5:30 pm on a weeknight) for awhile and settled in to enjoy our drinks. Our server created 6 unique cocktails based on our tastes, likes, and dislikes. They had some amazing hibiscus-flavored gin drinks, and delicious holiday cocktails. A great spot if you want to grab a drink before dinner!

Had a great experience dining solo at the bar with Vincent’s and Rose’s service. Staff here were incredibly friendly and warm and able to provide a great variety of cocktails that catered to my palette. The hostess and server (didnt get their names but they were working Jan 2nd) were very friendly and made me feel extremely comfortable. They were also knowledgeable and proactive. There is also a welcome amuse bouche which boasted 3 liqueurs and it tasted very good. Prices were a little high but in my opinion worthy due to the cocktail selection and service. Only other issue is that the bathroom was limited and not very convenient as it was outside the bar, but I understand that this is not controllable by staff. I didnt get to try their food as their kitchen closed at 10PM, but next time will try to make it out early enough to try. The hostess was very transparent with wait times and even gave customers the option to try out their sister location conveniently a 5 min walk from here, so I think they made a great effort to ensure customers had an enjoyable dining experience for the night, and that’s respectable. Overall, everything was great!!

Had 3 rounds of cocktails along with a welcome shot. Sat at the bar, enjoyed watching the bartender’s work their magic. Very unique experience, highly recommend. Sometimes service was slow but brilliance takes time. Went on a Tuesday evening around 9pm, had to wait about 20 minutes to get in.

Great vibe! We had a fun night out here. The drinks are a little pricey and I wish they offered a standard menu rather than trying to personalize drinks, but overall we liked this place.

It's a speak easy, can't say too much ;). Custom cocktails. Secret entrance to an intimate bar. Mixologist Mathieu was great. Made my 1st drink with tequila which I avoid but this was #1 now for me. Didn't even have a hangover. Find your way there. Sshhh!

The place is small and a bit loud, but the cocktails are simply incredible. The bartenders really know what they are doing. It doesn't matter how much of a curveball you ask for, they will deliver a balanced and delicious unique drink that fits your criteria. Highly recommended!

Amazingly unique experience, perfect for a 3rd or 4th date. The seating is arranged as a booth alongside one wall so perfect for a couple to sit next to each other. The dim lighting and soft music encourages hushed conversation which really adds to the intimacy. The drinks being unique and customized to your tastes is unforgettable and unique. 10/10 experience.

This is a fantastic little spot if you’re looking to spend an intimate night with someone special! Definitely recommend it to anyone. We had a fantastic night and ended it with a couple of drinks here. No doubt one of the best ambiance I’ve ever experienced. We were seated at the bar and still felt like we had a private and intimate night. Isaac was our mixologist and did a wonderful job serving us and customizing the experience to our taste! With specific and detailed questions, he knew exactly what we were looking to drink. Warm, dynamic and witty, Isaac provided fantastic service as-well as taking the time to present/explain what exactly was in our drink. He was very knowledgeable and an excellent conversationalist. He knew when to give us space although was always around to answer questions. We ended the night with a round of shots and couldn’t have been happier. Would definitely return to the cloakroom!

This place is worth it. We came to Montreal to visit and we found this place through Google Maps. We tried on a Sunday night and it was packed and we came back on a Monday and it really was worth it. The bar tender who happens to look like Arthur Shelby (Peaky Blinders) was so good. He made drinks that were so good that we stayed for hours. It really was a great experience. Like literally, the experience in this place is better than NYC.

Upscale and great mixologists in the Golden Mile area. Menu-less (which is the essence of a great bar as your cocktails are very much personalized), this Speakeasy is a place we highly recommend. It is small venue so it is quite intimate. We would have wanted to come at opening time to see how different the ambiance becomes but our visit was during our wedding anniversary post-dinner drinks so it was after-dark and we tried to observe the etiquette that is usually expected for SpeakEasy - so just a smidgen of what we partook from that visit is all we are sharing below. The staff that created the cocktails did wonderful job with what we said we liked/don’t like. Similar to chefs to a kitchen, these mixologists create the flavour profile and the right balance with the spirits and bitters or whatever flavours you wish to have on your drink. The mixologists who made our drink also was making sure that the place is spic and span for the next guests. What got us truly captivated during our visit happened during our “wait” time when we exchanged stories with the “door” man who after all that chat, we figured, must be the bar owner. He regaled us with how the pandemic has done such a huge curve ball for their industry and how each province’s way of handling the vaccination puts them in a pickle - although in Montreal it seems everyone was following the rules anyway. Sometimes, the best conversations happen with people whom you have no preconceived ideas or notions with - but the honest chat plus the truly great service from his team made our experience truly delightful!

Hidden behind a hall stand Mirror this gem of a bar is amazing. From the moment they greet you to the moment you leave a truly wonderful experience. There is no menu instead the bar folks chat with you about what you like. What tones would enhance, what flavours entice you. Then they work their magic I’m a gentleman who enjoys an old fashioned. Well the two I had were two unique servings. Each made by a different bartender. I wanted to try each of their takes on my drink. I thoroughly enjoyed and savoured each moment of these treasures It’s a small place. Go early. If you are visiting Montreal this must be included on your journey.

One of my favorite bars in Montreal. Great date spot, very intimate and romantic, service is next level, drinks are great (before covid you could customize your drink, currently cannot but they will be returning to old ways soon). Cannot recommend this place enough!!

A beautiful speakeasy place behind a clothes maison... The staff is very polite and professional, and the idea of the bar is not having a menu but giving indications to the waiter about your preferences and they will provide you with an excellent cocktail. This could make some people a little bit uncomfortable especially because the price is unknown but in our case we didn't have a bad surprise (prices around 20 cad). And the quality was extremely good for both of the cocktails we tried. I'd recommend this place.

Really cool bar. Extremely small, but there wasn’t a lot of people when we went (tuesday, in the evening) and plenty of spots were open. The entrance is also cool, and a little surprising if you’re looking at the mirror. They have good fruity drinks here, one out of the two spirit forward cocktails hit. I don’t recommend ordering anything with tequila with floral notes that is more spirit focused, i did not like what they made with that. Service was great, our waiter was really nice!

Service was friendly and efficient. They take the time to assess and discuss your preferences based on what you traditionally drink. Professional presentation and quality. Great vibe. Small place. I like the design. Good martinis. Even though I was in the very poor company of one whom I consider to be Satan's daughter, I still have a positive recollection of the establishment and recommend it.

The place is rated the top 50th bar. They use fresh real ginger. The look of the alcohol isn't fancy. but tastes good. very small place,if unlucky,it's hard to find spot, and gonna be a long wait. if lucky, you can get in immediately.

I visited this bar yesterday and i have to say i was blown away with the customer service here, especially from Jay. It was mind blowing good! I've been to many bars in Montreal and I can conclusively say this bar has the no.1 customer service in the city! Also too, the cocktails here are so smooth and well made. By far, Cloakroom Bar makes the best cocktails in Montreal! I will come here again in the future. I'm kinda addicted to their cocktails lol. I get that this bar is a bit pricey but because the cocktails are so good and the customer service is top tier, i'm willing to pay a little extra for that experience. I highly recommend this bar!

Cloakroom Bar is a great selection for someone looking for a thorough speakeasy experience. This place has a light capacity, so if you don’t come earlier in the night you will likely need to wait. Fortunately nobody was waiting in front of us when we arrived which made it more confusing but so much more fun to find. My friend and I were struggling to find the door. Right as we were turning around to give up, we turned to hear a voice coming from an opening in the wall where we never would have expected it. Luckily they had two seats open for us at the bar. The place makes good use of mirrors to seem a bit larger than it is. Cloakroom Bar has a unique modus operandi – there is no cocktail menu. Instead, you will be asked what flavours you are looking for in your cocktail or a cocktail that you enjoy that you would like to try a spin on. The bartender, Mateo, was a character. Nimble-tongued, charismatic and vehemently passionate about his job. I really enjoyed the dynamic of creating a drink in cooperation with the bartender, as this is something I’ve done at other bars on my own. The drink was uniquely flavoured and well-balanced, and captured the semi-sweet nutty tones I was aiming for. However for a smaller cocktail, they were on the pricier side ranging from $22-28 per drink. This pricing is expected for a downtown speakeasy, but I was thrown off to see the bartender using Bacardi White for my friends drink. With so many nicer bottles on the bar shelf and at a price point so high, I found it a bit embarrassing that they are using bar rail for their drinks with the prestige that they present themselves with. Other than this detail this was a phenomenal experience.

Good cocktails and excellent service. Place is really small so reservations encouraged. They don't have a menu, they make something based on what you like but if you go light and refreshing they tend to be on the sweeter side so be prepared

Fun speakeasy, always neat seeing how these bars are set up. Great service overall, but the recommended drinks don’t vary too much it seemed. You choose a spirit, pending the spirit, they work down through a tree (sweet, spicy, herbaceous, floral, etc) to recommend similar drinks overall. Recommended drinks range around 18$

  • 5/5 Simon G. 2 years ago on Google
Simply the best cocktail bar in Montreal! Arrive early or hope for the best as the bar only holds enough space for 12-20 people... The mixologists know what they are doing and will make you your perfect drink after simply 2-3 questions. Don't hesitate to be adventurous, you won't regret it.

Cozy cocktail bar with an indoor waiting area (good for winter!). Slightly loud for a speakeasy of only 20 seats. They didn't have mezcal stocked.

Went there since it was the closest speakeasy from my hotel. Excellent service and atmosphere! Little bit pricy on drinks but totally worth it :) must visit when visiting Montreal

We had been on an adventure to find the most "speak-easiest" speak-easy of them all while in Montreal, and this one did not disappoint. The cocktails were perfectly concocted. To be honest, their menu-less system was a bit confusing at first. But after the first drink, we got the hang of it pretty quick thanks to the attentive staff who were also quite knowledgeable.

I loved the experience! Dark bar with a small amount of seating, perfect for intimate dates between friends or lovers. The bartenders are excellent at mixology and ask you about your drink preferences to make a special drink tailored (Pun on words 🤣) exactly to your taste. I would recommend calling ahead to ensure you aren't standing in the hall waiting as seating truly is limited, possibly to a maximum of 20-25 people. Lovely experience!

A great speakeasy experience! We went into this super unassuming joint and when our seats were ready, were escorted into a great moody little place. There isn’t a lot of seating but they make up for it with the vibes and experience. You don’t order off a menu, instead you get a wonderful server to come and ask you what kind of alcohols and flavours you enjoy and they bring you a drink concocted by their bartender and wow you! They gave us samples of their house cocktail and it was absolutely delicious. They also have coat check which is a nice to have as well! Definitely worth the visit.

Loved it! No need to say more about the no menu policy.l since everyone has already mentioned. The customized drinks are right to the point, staff are super friendly. We waited for about 45mins but totally worth it. I will go again and again! there are 22 seats inside if I am not mistaken, so don't go as a big group. Perfect for 2.

Although there was a wait the host was very helpful and communicative of timing! The cocktails were well worth the wait (you provide flavour profiles and they craft a drink based on your preference) and the ambience was lovely. They started with a complimentary aperitif.

A very cool and nuanced placed. Np menu just share what you like and they will create a tasty, delicious, nuanced best version of what ever drink. Neat and creative. But also helpful if you know something about the spirits you like. Love the hidden camera detector. Small so very happy we’re were able to get in and enjoy 😉

Fantastic experience! Entrance is where the mirror is, next to the boutique. Staff are extremely friendly and knowledgeable. I got two cocktails that are exactly what I was looking for — fruity, sweet, summery, berries. There’s only like 15 seats so get there early! It fills up quick.

Getting in was a bit of a pain. We arrived on a Wednesday night and the friendly gentleman at the door told us to come back in 10 minutes. We go for a stroll and come back in 10 min and then he says he's sorry because people arrived during that time and got in ahead of us. So now we had to wait about another 30-40 minutes. So yeah.....not totally happy about that. But once we got in, the ambiance was cool, the service was ok and the drinks were simply amazing. There is no menu, you describe what you like and the bartenders make a cocktail for you. The place is tiny! There are mirrors on the wall which made it look bigger but you need to be comfortable with sitting in a cozy spot.

The speakeasy is all you ever need for a unique night out. In looking for a different place for drinks the cloakroom caught out attention. The location is small, with a maximum capacity of 25 people but the experience is worth the wait. The mixologists make drinks based on your taste and you will be blown away by the originality of their libations. I would recommend this is a great post or pre dinner drinks location. ** very LGBTQ friendly

My husband loved that we came here! We went right at 5pm to make sure we got a spot but it was a Monday evening so there wasn’t a line at all and we were seated immediately. They let you in behind the door disguised as a wall with a hanging mirror. The tickets they give at coat check are playing cards which I thought was cute and unique. I told them I liked French 75s and they made me the best one ever with hints of cucumber and floral. My husband likes the old fashioned and he really liked the cocktail made for him. The we’re on the Top 50 bars for 2022 and are known for their bourbons. Both bartenders, Jay and Simon, were friendly and knowledgeable. Highly recommend visiting this speakeasy! Such a fun experience!
