Great
views
of
the
broad
avenue,
Prinzregentenstrasse
and
the
Isar,
complete
with
numerous
fountains
and
formal
gardens
on
either
side.
The
Friedensengel,
the
Angel
of
Peace,
stands
above
Europaplatz
atop
a
traditional
38
meter
high
Corinthian
column.
Built
in
1899,
the
monument
is
a
reminder
of
the
25
years
of
peace
following
the
Franco-German
war
of
1870-71.
The
six
meter
tall
bronze
gilded
statue
at
the
top
is
a
replica
of
the
Nike
of
Paeonius.
Interestingly,
the
statue
fell
from
the
top
of
the
column
in
1981.
The
significantly
damaged
bronze
had
both
wings
and
leg
replaced
and
was
returned
to
the
top
of
the
column
in
1983.
The
wings
are
now
at
a
much
steeper
angle
than
the
original.
