It’s a small museum in a very beautiful setting, right by the sea in some old Portuguese colonial buildings. The café is a great place to relax after seeing the exhibition. Overall, it is certainly worth a visit but fails to reach its full potential as the main modern art institution in Salvador. While there are interesting artworks on show, the museum fails to engage with the local community, its history and art. The social and racial background of the artists selected for the exhibition, predominantly white and upper-middle class, fails to showcase how the rich Afro-Brazilian culture of Salvador has something unique to contribute to modern and contemporary art. Artworks may represent subjects closer to the local reality, and indeed Afro-Brazilian and indigenous motives are common, but the perspective from which they are seen is that of a predominantly white elite. Indeed, some exhibited works by white artists display signs of racial stereotyping in the depiction of Afro-Brazilian subjects, which the curation fails to critically engage with. An attempt was made by the curation to include in the exhibition what they call ‘popular art’, presumably to address this gap. Yet, the chosen artworks are almost always presented as anonymous and with limited contextualisation, a poor curatorial effort which rather than building a bridge between different artistic traditions appears to make implicit value judgements about their relative rank and worth.

The sitio where the MAM lies is indeed one of the most beautiful areas to visit in Salvador. I recommend you visit the infamous Lina Bo Bardi's helicoidal staircase and watch the stunning sunset here if it's sunny, especially during the summer. The museum itself however doesn't have a fixed exhibition or collection of its own.

Good Japanese restaurant. They introduce some typical Brazilian ingredients in their sushi and sashimi.

Great music. But steep hillside to go down. Could be difficult for people with disabilities. Arrive early to get a seat.

Wow, what an incredible museum! The exhibit was beautifully displayed, very colorful and rich in culture. I only wish they were more descriptions in English. I was also lucky to be there on a day where they had live Samba, it was special event, and beautiful, but started 1 hour after the intended start time. So the crowd baked in the sun while we waited for the musicians to start.

It's a beautiful place that could use its spaces better. There are some closed parts, such as the pier and access to the beach. The day I visited it was unusually hot and there was no working air conditioning or easily accessible hydration points around the place. It's a shame that one of the few trees was removed and the coffee region was now exposed to the sun at certain parts of the day.

Great exhibit, free entrance. There’s a great hidden little beach right next to it. Recommend.

Fine. Free. Nothing special as far as the art on display but the museum buildings are interesting. Nice place for coffee or a cold drink on site. Worth the minimal trouble getting there. I would not walk there, especially from Barra. Take a taxi.

I was amazed by the beauty of the place inside and outside, the whole place vibrates with art and what I love about Salvador is the exposure and appreciation of Afro-Brazilian culture. There is music, a café, a museum, a view of the famous Gamboa and a sea that exudes unique beauty!

Hmmm.... not a big exhibition. It's always good to check what's going on in local museums.

Awesome view of the sunset, jazz music, beverages and food. Crowded in summer.

The museum is beautiful, the staff are polite, but there is only a bathroom in the cafeteria and there is no water fountain, which goes against the inclusive and cultural dissemination initiative proposed by the museum.

Instead of museum I’d call it an exhibition or gallery. There’s only two rooms and little to no explanation about the art on display or it’s authors. However, it’s for free so worth a look.
