The food is very delicious and the taste is very original to what we get in India. Price is reasonable. The staffs are very friendly and also they check up often to get your feedback. If you love Indian food, especially South Indian foods like dosa , sambar then this is the place to go in Amsterdam !!

We visited this restaurant yesterday, Saturday night. On arrival at the restaurant, we noticed that there was nobody available to greet us, or enquire about our booking. Instead we were greeted by a dirty bar and chaotic atmosphere. The rest of the evening did not go any better. Clearly they were overwhelmed with too many bookings and not enough staff. Took an hour just to get our drinks. Would not recommend to go here on the weekend. We ordered a selection of starters and waited a very long time. By this stage, we gave up on getting mains. When we left, no apologies were made about the service or chaotic state of the restaurant. Dirty plates were stacked up on every table, which made for quite a bad experience even though the food we did have was tasty. Pity!

A diverse menu that takes you on a journey for discovering the South part of India through their particular dishes and traditional drinks. We were amazed by how good the food was but also about the quantities! Their menu also includes a lot of traditional drinks, and I can say one of the few places that offers Rose milk on their menu. Definitely recommending their thalis and dosas!

Good food overall! Nice ambience and comfortable seating for fine dining! Authentic south indian food. Chicken Chettinad was good. Malabar parotta is must have. Veg kotthu parotta was good. Mini ghee idli had milgai podi mix and was delicious. Medu vada- was crispy and soft as it should be And filter coffee was awesome at the end. Chicken ghee roast- good quantity and taste. Paneer ghee roast could have been better, it was a bit chewy. Mango lassi has mango essence but still good. God service and price to quantity ratio. Highly recommend.

We spent a lovely farewell dinner and to say a memorable one on our last evening in Amsterdam. Lovely ambience. Great friendly staff, very much accommodating. We felt as if we were in India. And most importantly the food, we had South Indian cuisine for dinner and that was all amazingly delicious. You can simply easily spend there nice family time with lovely food. And yes, was kids friendly. Highly recommended!

We visited this restaurant during our trip to Amsterdam. It’s a nice place for lunch or dinner. We ordered the veg platter as starter and it was really good but we didn’t like the mutton curry. We were hoping it would be Indian spicy but it was made of coconut gravy with very mild spices, not something we were expecting. But it is definitely worth trying if you are looking for indian food in Amsterdam (just discuss the spice level, before ordering:) )

Excellent, authentic tasting South Indian food! They have an exciting menu starting from the drinks. Items like thattu idli which will be hard to find outside of Southern India. The food was brimming with flavor and the service was super friendly. Highly recommend and a place to check out when in Amsterdam especially if you like South indian flavors.

Average food, awful & rude service; wouldn’t go back. I made a reservation for two at 19.00 and was seated promptly by helpful staff. The restaurant was packed and the service was quite slow. I ordered three dishes around 19.10 and the last dish (our main course) was out of the kitchen at our table at 19.40 - so we had about 20 minutes to finish our food, pay, and leave the premises (new lockdown rules in NL mandates restaurants to be closed at 20.00) To be considerate, we asked for the check and the rest of our food to be packed at 19.55; the server ignored us for the next 15 minutes, but when he did come back with the card machine, he screamed at us to hurry up and leave. We were confused as to why we were being treated like that when the delay was clearly not our fault- also, especially since every other table was still filled with customers in no hurry to leave. I was trying very hard to understand why we were ushered out while he did that to no other table. The server seemed to target his anger at us, coming back to scream at us a second time when we were already leaving. I was too shocked to respond but I guess he felt more comfortable to vent his anger at us rather that the other larger groups sitting all around us. Overall, it was super uncomfortable, embarrassing, absolutely unacceptable behaviour.

Unique South Indian cuisine - more than just dosas! We had a very spicy fisherman's curry with white fish, a potato dosa, and a vegetarian starter I don't recall the name of. Unfortunately the spice level is not adjustable like in US Indian restaurants, and the curry was much too hot for my father. But it's a huge menu with plenty of milder options. Service felt a little rushed, but the restaurant is small and was busy on a Tuesday night. Our waiter was kind enough to bring a raita yogurt side to ease the spice level. I also had a delicious gin and tonic with black peppercorns and ginger ale. A refreshing accompaniment to the spicy, flavorful meal. Highly recommended for a unique style of food. Not handicapped accessible, in fact it was difficult to get up the steep stairs as an able-bodied person.

All the dishes we have tried were full of flavor. As starter we have ordered Onion Mundri Pakoda and we’ve got blown away with the balance of the uncountable spices it contained. The portions were decent and the waiters were very attentive; asking us if we are enjoying the food and whether we need anything or not. Definitely will come again!

Madras Diaries in Amsterdam is an absolute culinary gem, and my recent dining experience was nothing short of extraordinary. I had the pleasure of indulging in the Palli Palayam Kozhi Biryani and Chemmeen Biryani, and let me tell you, they were simply amazing. The Palli Palayam Kozhi Biryani was a symphony of flavors, each bite bursting with authenticity and perfectly cooked chicken. The Chemmeen Biryani, featuring succulent shrimp, was a delightful dance of spices that elevated my taste buds to new heights. Beyond the exceptional food, the ambiance at Madras Diaries is a perfect blend of warmth and sophistication. The attentive and friendly staff added a personal touch to the experience, ensuring every moment was memorable. For those craving an unforgettable journey through South Indian flavors in Amsterdam, Madras Diaries is an absolute must-visit. The Palli Palayam Kozhi Biryani and Chemmeen Biryani are culinary masterpieces that deserve to be savored. Prepare your taste buds for an explosion of authenticity and pure satisfaction.

Been here during the last week of 2023, so did hundreds of other ppl. Too crowded but the food was on the table just on time. Ambience: It’s a big area to fit a small office party. Can look jam packed during the weekdays. Food: ordered Kozhambu chicken & dessert. The flavours were amazing. Loved the chicken kozhambu, however their proportion was just sufficient for one person :/ Naan was soft and puffed. Loved the jaggery coconut dessert. Pricing: It was decently priced for 2 ppl. Suggestion: they have a big menu and it would be good to stick to Tamil Nadu cuisine or just to have smaller menu in which they specialize. More options can confuse people and ultimately most curries will taste the same.

Let me start by saying- One of best authentic South Indian restaurant in Netherlands. We visited this place at the start in 2019 Dec, when they started. We liked them that and were really happy. Till date they have kept the lovely taste , authentic and flatter with their service. Their specials meals on festive days are truly amazing and my favourite. If you ever want to try authentic South Indian food, this is the place.

One of the best South Indian place in Amsterdam. I tried puri sabji, idli which is awesome. Tried also the kozhi Chettinad chicken curry, which is very authentic. Very much recommended if you would like to try authentic South Indian food. The restaurant people is very nice and welcoming. If you are visiting there in weekend, a reservation should be done as this is a very popular place.

I fondly remember this place during my trip to Amsterdam almost 2 years ago. We stumbled across this authentic South Indian restaurant and were delighted by the food. I highly recommend this place for authentic South Indian cuisine. They have got everything right - right from the dosas to the accompanying chutney. The ambience is also top notch. I'd definitely visit here again on my next trip to Amsterdam!

Very nice Indian restaurant. Judging it by its location which is in one of the most touristic streets of Amsterdam would be a very wrong prejudice. The restaurant is definitely not a tourist trap. Food is really good, prices are honest and service is friendly. The venue itself is not wow but also not bad. I will probably come again

Not for everyone - Even the „not spicy“ food is extremely spicy (including the classic butter chicken which is usually nice and smooth) - makes it hard to enjoy your meal. If you you like to breathe fire though I can recommend. The service is a little bit slow.

The best indian food ever. And the best Indian restaurant experience ever. The family that owns the restaurant was wonderful and went above and beyond to make sure we had the best experience possible. Highly recommended.

Excellent Indian restaurant! Wide choice of food and drinks for everyone taste. From non-spicy to real spicy food. Prices are on the upper end, but atmosphere and food justify it.

The Madras Diaries was recommended to us by a family friend for being very authentic and delicious South Indian food. It's a bustling restaurant in a touristy part of Amsterdam, but don't let that deter you from coming! It was super packed when we went, and got increasingly more busy as the night progressed. We did not have a reservation but they sat us immediately. We got three starters, two main courses, and a Mysore Masala Dosa. Our three starters were some Medu Vadai, Onion Pakoda, and Chemeen (shrimp) fry (all not pictured, because we dug in immediately 😂). For the two mains, we had some egg roast and fish curry; both were excellent and came with paratha and some rice, respectively! The Mysore Masala Dosa was, of course, very delicious. I agree with other reviewers: it has a homestyle feel to both the cooking and service. Everyone was incredibly friendly and helpful. When we are back in Amsterdam, I will definitely return!

Madras is my home town and I can say that this place is legit. Tasty food, flavorful (not spicy for the sake of being spicy) and wonderful variety of authentic and commercial offerings on the menu. Skip the “tikka masalas” and “naan breads” and please try dosas, idly, sam bar etc. Nice staff and great location in Ams.

Absolutely spectacular food, service, and decor. I can't say enough good things! The Malai murghi is awesome, as are the chemeen (shrimp) biryani (Kerala style, so slightly different from Punjabi or Hyderabadi), the masala Dosa, and the idly. Run to this place if you're craving good south Indian food!!

Not the most charming street in Amsterdam city center and not the most tempting entrance but… on top of the steep chairs a very neat interior is revealed. Beautiful restaurant with a big menu card. We came for lunch here and ignored the curries although we love them. We had a selection of starters for lunch. And it was very tasty. Especially the soft chicken.

We’ve visited The restaurant twice in two days of our stay here and the vibe of the place is very good Service is excellent. They even sanitize the menus. They’ve great choices of food. Highly recommend the vegetarian starters, thatte idli. Only critique is chutney can be served more and can be made a bit more authentic.

A nice surprise find in the busy area of Amsterdam! At the entrance we felt a bit sceptical about the restaurant. I think they should make entrance a bit more bright or something. Anyway, up the stairs a nice restaurant is waiting for to serve. So please do go upstairs. About the food: Little bit pricey but it’s Amsterdam so I can understand. Food menu is good. It provides all information. We ordered mix dishes. Some dishes originated from north part of India and some south part of India. All were really tasty. My highlight was tandoori Roti which is authentic and hard to find abroad. 100% recommended if you are willing to try real authentic Indian food. One suggestion for the owner: it would be nice to have desert in the menu. We tried to look in the menu but couldn’t find one.

Have visited only twice as of now, the last was yesterday (15/10/21). The first time I was here I was already a fan, with the authenticity of the Indian food you can get here. The taste was heavenly and specially the Biryani was amazing, I am a huge fan of Biryani and never tasted something like this before in Netherlands. People who understand difference between "Biryani" and "Dum Biryani" I must say this was an authentic Dum Biryani, for which I have been looking for in Netherlands/Europe for 6 years. Based on last visit it was already a 5 star for me, and still is Food wise. But I am giving 1 star less, because of mismanagement when placing orders, I have read that before in comments (before visiting 1st time), but experienced that last night. We ordered 2 Mendu Vada but only 1 arrived, we ordered Butter chicken with Naan, but waited with just the curry for 10 minutes, after which I literally had to walk to the counter to let them know that we have no naan yet, and the curry is getting cold. Except for mismanagement in orders, the people are really nice and humble, and this is now my favourite Indian restaurant, but would appreciate if you work on the orders better.

I've heard a lot about this restaurant, but unfortunately, the taste seems to be tailored to suit local preferences rather than authentic Indian cuisine. We ordered Dosa which was completely dry in taste and stuffing has no taste. Additionally, despite being extremely busy, the service is disappointingly slow. Overall, it was a rather disappointing experience. I sincerely hope they can enhance both the taste and efficiency of their service.
