This
hostel
was
made
by
rich
people
who
have
never
stayed
in
real
hostels.
Allow
me
to
explain.
I’m
currently
sitting
in
a
common
area
drinking
beer
and
waiting
for
my
clothes
to
dry.
Why
am
I
sitting
in
the
common
area
instead
of
the
lounge?
Because
the
lounge
doesn’t
have
any
outlets
near
the
chairs
and
sofa.
Why
am
I
drinking
beer?
Because
my
clothes
are
drying
(drying
only)
for
1
hour
and
39
minutes.
When
I
checked
in,
I
specifically
asked
the
clerk
if
the
washers
were
hard
to
use.
I
asked
because
this
happens
in
Japan
a
lot.
She
said
no
and
also
said
that
there
were
English
instructions
on
a
paper.
OK.
I
thought
I
could
be
efficient
by
washing
and
drying
my
clothes
before
I
went
out
tonight.
So
I
go
back
to
the
washer
and
follow
the
instructions.
The
display
reads
8
hours
and
41
minutes.
I
sat
looking
at
the
display
for
over
a
minute
because
I
thought
maybe
it
was
the
time,
like
it’s
8:41.
It
wasn’t
8:41
at
the
time,
but
maybe
the
time
was
wrong
like
on
VCRs
back
in
the
day.
But
no,
it
was
counting
down.
The
clerk
confirmed
this
when
she
came
upstairs
to
look
at
it.
She
stood
there
pressing
buttons
for
almost
5
minutes,
making
it
clear
to
me
that
these
washers
are
not
easy
to
use.
Different
times
appeared
each
time
she
presses
start.
5
hours.
3
hours
and
38
minutes.
Finally
she
set
it
to
rinse
only
for
16
minutes.
She
said
she
would
come
back
in
16
minutes
to
turn
it
back
on
and
set
it
to
dry
my
clothes.
After
I
got
back
from
buying
beer,
the
display
read
1
hour
39
minutes.
I
just
checked
again
and
it’s
at
35
minutes.
When
I
checked
in,
the
clerk
made
a
photocopy
of
my
Japanese
ID
card.
That’s
fine.
That’s
common
practice
for
hotels
in
Japan.
But
then
she
said,
“Is
this
your
first
time
in
Japan?”
I
thought
that
was
strange
considering
only
people
who
live
in
Japan
have
Japanese
ID
cards.
Are
the
facilities
nice?
Sure.
Everything
looks
new
and
it’s
clean.
But...this
place
is
strange.
For
example:
The
cubbyholes
for
the
beds
in
the
shared
dorm
are
insane.
I
have
a
top
bunk,
but
the
ladder
is
off
to
the
right
side
of
the
opening.
It’s
too
high
to
boost
myself
up,
but
when
I
climb
the
ladder
my
head
bumps
into
AC
ducts.
So
I
have
to
duck
down
and
step
left
and
forward
to
get
into
my
sleeping
area.
Basically
I
almost
died
the
first
time
I
did
this.
The
lockers
don’t
have
a
lock
and
are
in
a
recessed
corner
of
the
room
without
lighting,
so
I
can’t
see
what’s
inside.
There’s
a
small
lockable
cabinet
in
my
sleeping
area,
but
using
it
requires
me
to
climb
into
the
sleeping
area
and
risk
falling
again.
The
door
to
the
street
has
a
lock,
but
it
doesn’t
lock
automatically.
The
clerk
told
me
to
lock
it
whenever
I
go
in
or
out,
which
I’ve
done.
But
I’ve
been
out
3
times,
and
all
3
times
it
was
left
unlocked
by
other
guests.
All
right,
then.
The
design
choices
for
this
place
are
strange.
But
I
dunno,
maybe
it
was
designed
by
Japanese
people
for
Japanese
people.
But,
to
me,
it’s
just
too
sterile
and
strange.
Like
an
alien
saw
a
hostel
on
Google
and
then
built
a
new
hostel
based
on
that.
The
common
area
includes
a
large
tent
set
up
on
artificial
grass.
There’s
a
camping
grill
set
up
next
to
it,
but
I
don’t
think
it’s
meant
to
be
used.
They
have
a
Dyson
vacuum
cleaner
and
some
kind
of
glowing
humidifier
that
may
also
be
a
sentry
robot.
It
sounds
crazy,
but
you
should
see
this
thing.
Speaking
of
seeing
things,
I
don’t
know
if
I
can
upload
photos
to
go
along
with
this
review.
Maybe
it’s
the
next
step
in
this
review
process,
I
dunno.
Anyway.
I
was
gonna
rate
it
3
stars,
but
3
stars
is
“good”
whereas
2
stars
is
“OK.”
I
consider
this
an
OK
experience
considering
the
kind
of
night
I’ve
had.
