One of the most amazing places I've ever seen! Stunning nature, serene temples, and the charming sight of bowing deer – it feels like paradise. Don't forget to buy biscuits to feed the deer, but keep in mind that male deer can be a bit more spirited than females. There's a chance they might act aggressively or nip. If you're with children and wish to feed the deer, it's safer to choose females over males.

We came here in the afternoon, too bad we couldn’t have enough time to explore the golden lantern area 😭 which is our main interest when we were planning to visit this shrine. But we can still enjoy the serene ambience its offer, giving us a peace of mind.

(Trip was made back then on 21 Nov 2019, 2 years before the Covid-19 Pandemic hit) Nestled deep within Nara Park lies Kasuga Taisha Shrine, which is the most celebrated shrine in Nara and is considered one of the most sacred sites in Japan. It feels so otherworldly when you first step foot onto its compound, where numerous stone lanterns first great you. Over 3000 stone lanterns have been donated by worshippers. As you approach the main building, you’ll be greeted by hundreds of beautifully designed bronze lanterns. Hence, it is no surprise that the shrine is famous for its lanterns, and known for its lantern festival, where the all the lanterns will be lit up after sunset. Sadly the lantern festival only takes place twice a year, early February and mid-August, and I was here in November for their autumn season. Nevertheless, it was still a great experience and there was even a dark room lit with lanterns to give visitors a glimpse of how the the Lantern Festival would have looked like. Definitely worth the effort and one of the highlights in Nara. Would love to return and experience its Lantern Festival when we recover from the Covid-19 pandemic (and when travelling is allowed again).

This time I visited only the main shrine. The deer take a nap after passing through the first torii gate. The fawn with a little "Kanoko pattern" is cute. You can feel the virgin forest with your whole body when you pass through the torii of 2. The main shrine also has a paid area. "Ema" is a lucky charm that grants wishes. Write your wishes on the deer-shaped Ema.

Really beautiful forest surrounding the shrine. A magical feel to it. Aspects remind me of Angkor Watt. Tue deer wander throughout the monuments, trees and pathways. The tree roots are stunning with the intricate patterns they make. The shrine itself is a paid entry but the best parts are probably the pathways around it. It's also nice that not many tourists go there so it's not too busy.

The shrine at Nara Park. The place is line with many stone lantern. The forest is very present to walk through. Building is painted in red lacquer. It is a beautiful place to take photos. There is a wisteria plant inside the temple. (bloom May or later)

Beautiful shrine by the end of Nara Park where tons of deer were around. Quite a way to walk, so be sure to wear comfortable shoes. The majority of the woods are off-limits to visitors, so better not walk into them while the structures are not supposed to be touched as well.

Another of the seven famous Nara Temples and this one is up there with the best. It is dedicated to the kami (spirits) of the Fujiwara clan. It has beautiful lanterns. It is actually located on the slopes of Mount Mikasa and is surrounded by a forest of cedar trees. The shrine is particularly popular during the Setsubun festival in February, when people come to pray for good luck and to throw beans at evil spirits.

Beautiful shrine with all the lanterns. Walking up you are greeted with Nara deer which actually bow for deer crackers. It’s worth the extra ¥500 for viewing more of the lanterns on the right side entrance.

Nice shrine tucked away at the corner of Nara. Entry is free but there are shops that you can buy little trinkets and amulets. We took around 30 mins to walk here from nara park. You can also see deers along the way.

Nice temple, my second favorite in Nara. The temple in itself is pretty but what makes it most interesting is the stone lantern covered in moss that gives a very Ghibli vibe like you are in an ancient abandonned place

A lovely and quiet shrine deep into Nara Park. This was our first stop when visiting Nara. We took the bus from the train station into the park as close to Kasuga-taisha, and then walked the path to the shrine. Walking among the stone lanterns covered in moss felt like a bit of a fairy tale. Our visit to the shrine was a little shorter than planned, on account of a single tour group that were yelling and shouting all over the place, and not engaging with their surroundings quietly and respectfully, as one would expect in Japan (this may be the only place/time we saw this). We never found the area with a sample of the lanterns lit, which was disappointing. But that's no fault of the shrine - just our ability to navigate it and loss of patience with certain types of tourists.

It’s was a great area to visit. There are a fewer people people because it’s a little bit more far than the Nara park. You can walk with your dog but do not come too close to the dears. Moreover the temple is forbidden for dogs. But it’s normal. I was able to look at the outside which is great

I was visiting this shrine on October 7, 2023. We have to wait for about 5 minutes to buy the ticket which costs 500 yen. In my opinion, it was worth your bucks. As you enter this place, the shrine is enlisted as the UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with other sites in Nara. The shrines was believed to be built in around 1300 years ago. This shrine was believed to be the protector of ancient capital and Japan. This area also packed with the sika, or the Japanese deer. Worth to visit and have a look along with other sightseeing such as the Todaiji temple, Nara park, and Kofukuji in Nara.

Beautiful place in the center of Nara. The way up to the shrine was beautiful and quiet, the deers are friendly and lovely. It was worth it to buy the 500 yen ticket to get inside and take a look around and to feel the serenity. The shrine itself was breathtaking and we were even lucky enough to have witnessed a Japanese wedding that took place in the shrine, it was truly unique and amazing.

Kasuga Taisha is dedicated to the deity responsible for the protection of the city. It was also the tutelary shrine of the Fujiwara clan - one of the Japan's most powerful family during Nara and Heian Periods. Kasuga Taisha is famous for its lanterns, which have been donated by worshippers (temple has more than 3000 of them). Hundreds of bronze lanterns are hanging from the buildings and hundreds of stone lanterns line up on the way leading to the shrine. Apparently, the lanterns are lit only 3 days a year during Lantern Festivals. Now however visitors may admire some of the lit lanterns inside one of the halls that is pitched black (on purpose) so that the visitors can see how the lanterns would look like during the Festivals. Kasuga Taisha Shrine (inner area) is open from 09:00 – 16:00. Entrance fee (Oct 2023) was 500 ¥.

The most enlightened temple of Japan? Founded in 768 by the mighty Fujiwara clan, the "Temple of the Lanterns" is dedicated to four kami: Ame no koyane, Himegami, Futsunushi no mikoto, and Takemikazuchi no mikoto, combined known as the Kasuga Daimyōjin. The interior of the shrine is famous for its many bronze lanterns, as well as the many stone lanterns that lead up the shrine. Whichever way you walk to the temple, your route will always be flanked by a total of 3,000 stone lanterns. The best (and also teh most busy) times to visit the Kasuga Tiasha shrine is during one of the Mantoro (Ten-thousand Lantern) Festivals, Setsubun Mantoro (February 3) and Chugen Mantoro (August 14–15), when the lanterns are lit up. So enlighten yourself!

Beware of rude people working here! Each time I come here, I have my politeness met with rudeness. So try not do this as the last thing on your Nara trip as you will leave with a bad feeling. People ignoring your greetings, etc. This time the guy at the counter was clearly pretending to not understand Japanese nor English when we politely asked if we can enter at 5pm as he just wanted to get rid of us on his way of early closing (tourist buses were leaving). It is supposed to be open till 6pm / last entry 17:30. "Sorry, we are closing early" in any language (even in body language) would have been fine, but he chose to not communicate and clearly didn't even want to be understandable. It was very awkward to stand there thinking why is he just not giving us a clear no instead of this mumbling circus? The growing feeling I am left with after each visit is that it is a money making place - expensive parking, admission, special admission tickets. And their real opening times seem to be dependent on when bus hordes arrive and leave?? This was in October.

Well worth the entry fee to experience the entire shrine. With a small area setup on the north end of the shrine to experience the lanterns being lite in a dark room. We visited the shrine early February around 11:00am on a weekday and crowds were minimal.

Many different paths - wide and narrow - take you through this traditional temple complex. You will definitely see lanterns and bells, and possibly groups of people in traditional costume. Great for photography; look out for bells naturally decorated in moss. Yet another great place to see when visiting Nara.

Fascinating ancient shrine with amazing history and striking visuals. There is a lot to see outside of the main buildings but it's worth the admission charge to enter and see the interior. Please don't be a tourist jerk and take photos in the no-photography area; it's so easy to be polite and respectful. Be sure to catch the darkened hall of lit lanterns to get an idea of what the lantern festival is like and what the shrine would have looked like in ages past.

Most people come to Nara to see the Great Buddha and deer park but be sure you don’t overlook Kasuga-Taisha! It was my favorite spot in Nara. It’s about a 15 minute walk away from the Big Buddha area all on an easy path through the park with stone lanterns lining both sides of the path as you get closer. You’ll spot deer wandering about the entire way and can get some amazing pics as it’s not so crowded. Pay the admission fee to go into the central shrine area and take your time admiring the hundreds of metal hanging lanterns that all have different designs. There’s even a small room you can go in where the lanterns are lit up. We spent over an hour just wandering through Kasuga-Taisha and the surrounding stone lanterns area. Less popular means less crowded too!

The Kasuga Shrine is within walking distance from the Todai-ji Temple and to the Nara JR Station. I did not get to go inside the temple because there was a ceremony going on but the place was packed - mainly with locals. However, the shrine really is know for what it looked to my like several thousand lanterns, which make for a very unique atmosphere. Absolutely gorgeous place. If you are going to Nara to see the Todai-ji, then take some extra time to check this place.

Kasuga Taisha is at the end of the heritage site walk and is well worth it. Do buy the tickets and go inside and allow yourself enough time to dwell and soak in the atmosphere of this ancient place. Just a tip - once you exit, there is a walk up the hill through many small shrines. Go to the end and double back. Don’t take any of the side tracks. We took one and it put us outside the area into a neighborhood

Deers running around and hustling for some crackers 🙂 but beautiful location to walk through. I’d recommend visiting in Spring or Fall Green and Serine atmosphere brilliant colors that enhance the lanterns and the natural moss that makes the entire experience epic. The deer can be a lot of fun too. They seem to know how to bow and identify a zebra crossing 🥲

This temple is famous for the bowing deer, and they really do bow! You don't even need any food. Lots of people were trying to make the deer at the front of the park bow, but here they did it without us even realising they would. The small deer in the picture was waiting by the stone pillar and bowing as soon as you raised a hand. The temple itself is large, but because it is a low huddle of buildings in the trees it's nowhere near as impressive as Todai-ji.

This shrine was within the Nara park (which also has many other shrines). Amidst the many other shrines, this was my pick as it was associated with the deers. The walk to the shrine was very pretty and scenic. There were deers walking around the area and they were less aggressive compared to the ones nearer to the train station. There is a fee to go into the prayer area proper but the outer area if the shrine is free to enter.

I've been here several times, but the latest is in Oct 2020. It's nowhere as busy as when the international tourists can visit. The forest surrounding it already makes this place quite peaceful, but it's even more so nowadays. I like the path leading into this shrine. It is quite a walk, but it's mostly flat. If you have mobility issues or cannot walk longer than 10-15 minutes in one go, plus a few steps at the end, I would forego this attraction.

One of the oldest shrine in Nara, not sure which one is older if compared to Todai-ji, both are stunning in their on way, one being a shrine and the other a temple. Kasuga-taisha is located quite in the far end of the park. Not the furthest one, but still enough for an exercise. The shrine surroundings of stone lanterns covered with moss enchants the atmosphere more as if you're in a far away land.

(Translated by Google) Two in me. Next to the main shrine, I used a loudspeaker to raise my voice and announced a special exhibition. Is it a consumer electronics mass retailer? It was released instead of putting a notebook at the timing when I tried to receive the red stamp. Didn't you like the fact that you were standing upright and waiting silently in a remote place in the light rain? I'm sorry, no matter how prestigious it is, what people do. There is only distrust here. (Translated by Google) The beginning is Kamiyama Mikasayama is about Kasugayama, and at the foot of the mountain, the main shrine of Takemikazuchi, the lord of Futsu, the candy hut, and the god of himegami, under the command of Emperor Toku in the 768th year of the Nara period. Was built. Festivals to pray for the peace and prosperity of the nation-state are held more than 2,200 times a year. The Kasuga Festival on March 13th, which has continued for more than 1200 years, is still attended by the emperor's deputy messenger from the palace, and a ritual to pray for safety is performed. In addition, the Miyanaka seasonal festival, Kamimi, Tango, and Tanabata festivals, which are related to the etymology of the early, middle, and late stages, have been moved to the Heian period and have been held until now. When God came to Mikasayama from Hitachi Province in the Nara period, Kasuga Shinka 🦌 was a companion to God and was treated with great care as a messenger of God because he came on a white deer. 1,300 deer live in the area around Nara Park. There used to be 3,000 lanterns, and Kasuga Taisha was the brightest place in Nara. (Translated by Google) A shrine with a history of 1300 years. I arrived at 8am in mid-January. The reception was from 9 o'clock, so it was cold, but it was less popular and I was able to take a walk with a refreshing feeling. It is a luxury that monopolizes the spirit of the mountains in the morning. Early morning visits are highly recommended, as you can see the shrine maiden cleaning. It was a valuable opportunity, so I visited the nine Mizutani shrines, the 15 Wakamiya shrines, and the Hyakudoishi of Kinryu Shrine. After all, I came here, so I don't regret not doing it.
