Built
by
winds
and
sea
currents,
the
Curonian
Spit
and
its
dunes
is
a
ribbon
of
sand
separating
the
Curonian
Lagoon
from
the
Baltic
Sea. These
sandy
hills
reach
60
m
in
height,
which
equals
to
a
20-story
building.
The
Dead
Dunes
derive
its
name
from
the
relentless
movement
of
sand
that
buried
several
villages
in
the
past.
Today's
dunes
have
been
stabilized
w
sprawling
rooted
vegetation.
There
is
a
walking
path
that
begins
easy,
then
changes
into
a
300-meter-long
boardwalk
before
reaching
the
sand
dunes.
At
this
point
remove
your
shoes
and
sink
your
toes
in
the
deep
sand,
which
can
be
quite
hard
and
tiring
to
walk
across.
Reaching
the
top,
you
are
rewarded
with
glorious
views
of
the
Curonian
Spit
and
its
surroundings. The
Baltic
Sea
can
be
seen
in
the
distance
in
the
opposite
direction.
The
trail
is
about
1.1
km
one
way.
Strollers
&
access
for
the
disabled
is
limited
once
the
boardwalk
ends.
Small
parking
lot
for
about
15
cars
and
a
fee
to
hike
onto
the
dunes.
