I’ve had so many bad experiences with this restaurant, its my own fault for giving them chances over and over. The first incident was a couple years ago; I ordered 2 dosas to be delivered and they only provided enough sambhar and coconut chutney for 1 dosa. Each dosa is supposed to come with its OWN sambhar and chutney. The second incident with this restaurant was when I ordered pav bhaji for pickup. They asked me what level of spice to put. I said medium. When I got my order, it was like I just bit into a ghost pepper. I couldn’t taste a thing. Only spice. I went back to rectify the issue but they refused to accept that they gave me an inedible dish. In the same visit, I asked to use the bathroom as I really had to go, they refused to let me use it even though I JUST ordered pav bhaji from them. The third incident was the same as the first incident. I ordered 3 dosas and they provided me sambhar and coconut chutney for only 1 dosa. I was absolutely livid. This order was also late and for delivery (not the restaurant’s fault) but when I called them to inquire about it, the woman I spoke with was unbelievably rude to me despite me nicely asking about the status of my order. She was so snappy and unprofessional. See below, I attached pictures of the sambhar and coconut chutney they sent along with the 3 dosas I ordered. They are supposed to provide whats in the picture for all 3 dosas. Not just one. This place is cheap and shorts you on the food you PAID for and they have horrible customer service. DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT give this horrible place your business. Try Dosa Delight instead, its just down the street from Samudra. Done with Samudra.

The food was an absolute hit. We had a paneer dosa, Chana masala and roti. Quite an extensive menu, and I’d love to come back and try more things. Of what we ordered, it’s maybe the best I’ve had in the city. The vibe is homey and casual. The service is friendly and familiar.

My vegetable vindaloo was phenomenal. Rather spicy, but also flavorful. I felt so much warmth and rejuvenation in every bite. It was unbelievable. It felt like bliss in food form. I didn’t miss the chicken whatsoever, as the vegetables did the job just perfectly. The rice was also warm and spicy. The food also looked beautiful. The vindaloo had a boiling red color that perfectly matched the exhilarating heat. I was doubtful about how good vegetarian Indian food would be, but Samudra didn’t just exceed my expectations, no, Samudra eclipsed all of my preconceptions about what vegetarian food could be. Samudra proved to me that meat’s importance may be overstated, at least from a culinary standpoint. Even without meat, the vindaloo was the most tasty I’d ever had. The spice was perfectly balanced: enough to pack a punch, but still scarce enough not to overwhelm the flavors. And boy, were they good flavors. Did I mention that this meal was $12? $12, for one of the best meals of my life. What a steal. Samudra is why I explore restaurants, to find something brilliant and different, that also illuminates me. Not only was the food brilliant and unique, my dinner at Samudra changed my entire culinary outlook. I once saw meat as crucial, and in fact, I was dreading an Indian meal without warm chicken or pork, but Samudra has changed my mind: vegetarian food can be as good if not better than anything with meat. Adjusted for price, Samudra is my favorite Indian restaurant, even without price, it probably still is. (Although Astoria’s Seva is phenomenal, too.) But with price, this food is unbeatable. Not to mention that Samudra is a place I can take everyone: meat eaters and vegetarians. I left Samudra feeling both light, and enlightened. I love everything about Samudra, from the dingy aesthetic, to the expansive menu, to the amazing prices, to the unmatchable quality of the food. Is this my new favorite restaurant? Maybe. Rating: 10/10 Adjusted Rating: 10/10

Loved the food. Dosa was so good and so was the sev chaat. The vada sambhar stole the show. We wrapped up all the food pretty well. Would definitely be coming here again. Prices are pretty decent too.

I have been coming for years it’s always such a pleasure dining here. Food taste authentic South Indian cuisine. We cannot compete any other Dosa place to Samudra. It is classic southern cuisine of india. Dosa and chutneys (condiments) and thali which verity you can try little of everything. It’s best place gather with family. Remind me my childhood mother cooking.

I traveled all the way from the Bronx to try this spot and it was Amazing. This was truly a amazing meal Between the fresh plate sized Dosa, to the chana bhatura truly amazing. The food wasn't overly grease and not overly spiced it was all done perfectly. The server was very nice she explained a little about the the place and she made sure I was well attended to.

Not sure what people raved and reviewed this place about. Ordered the thali, the only thing that was good was the rasam and plain rice. It's not as authentically tasty if that's what you're going for at an Indian restaurant. The waiter also doesn't serve much or provide a customer-friendly attitude if you're S Asian, he focuses on non-S Asians.

Came here for the first time and had a blast experience. The staff were very friendly and helpful. They even warned me about street parking. I'm a new Yorker but to this local. I thought the parking was usually free after 7pm, however, the street that I parked was actually free after 10pm. I avoided getting a ticket thanks to the staff. The food was the bomb! Love everything I ordered. That warm gulab jamun and ice cream for the dessert brought me a fully pleased closure.

My mouth started watering immediately upon walking into Samudra. I ordered to go, but it smelled heavenly in this restaurant. The staff was very kind and appreciative of my order. The space is well ventilated and their were outdoor tables available. The food was excellent. The menu is entirely vegetarian with a mix of Northern and Southern Indian delights. Highly recommend the Samosa Chaat, Palak Paneer, Vegetable Vindaloo, and Baigan Bharta. They offer a substantial amount of rice for free with order of entrees. Excited to return!!!

Wonderful experience! Delicious food, all vegetarian and super healthy which we love. We had such a nice chat with the owners to it really feels like a nice family place. Can’t wait to come back. Also, the best roti I’ve had in New York City.

This restaurant is one of my favorites. The flavors are clear and distinct, and I totally recommend the combination platters, which allow you to discover new things. A very homey, simple, and warm setting; you feel like you're eating in a family kitchen. Moreover, the staff is wonderfully sweet to everyone. We travel for hours to get here-- in fact, we used to drive more than a hundred miles. Especially on return trips, we've started to feel like it's a delicious place that we know and love.

My favorite Indian restaurant in the neighborhood. I've been here more than 15 times and I'm still amazed by how good it is. Plenty of vegan options, too. Edit: i still think the food is great but, unfortunately, the service is not. After pointing out that we've been waiting for our food much longer than people who came after us and ordered similar dishes, we were told it's our fault because we asked if we could sit outside. Come on!

Poor service Staff is not at all generous They gave me worst rava dosa which I had ever had They don't even have 'to go' proper box No matter taste is good, but extremely poor service and manners We come from far places to eat Indian food , and the resturant does such things I wish not to go there again

My wife and I recently visited the Samudra restaurant in Jackson Heights with high hopes for an enjoyable dining experience. Unfortunately, our visit turned out to be a complete letdown, leaving us frustrated and dissatisfied. Upon arriving at the restaurant, we were promptly seated but immediately noticed a lack of attentiveness from the staff. We placed our food order and were made to wait for nearly an hour, with no indication as to why our order was taking so long. When we inquired about the delay, the elderly man who appeared to be the owner brushed us off with empty promises, repeatedly claiming that our food would be ready in "just 5 minutes." It became evident that his reassurances were far from the truth. The complete lack of customer service skills exhibited by the owner was disheartening. Despite our clear frustration and inconvenience, he seemed indifferent and uninterested in resolving the issue. As paying customers, we expected a basic level of courtesy and concern, but it was sorely lacking in this establishment. Furthermore, the overall cleanliness of the restaurant left much to be desired. The untidy appearance of the premises was off-putting, suggesting a lack of attention to hygiene and cleanliness standards. This only served to further diminish our confidence in the establishment's ability to provide a satisfactory dining experience. Given the extended wait time, the owner's dismissive attitude, and the uncleanliness of the restaurant, we ultimately decided to leave without even receiving our food. It was an incredibly disappointing experience, and we left feeling frustrated and let down. In conclusion, I cannot recommend the Samudra restaurant in Jackson Heights based on our unfortunate experience. The significant wait time, the owner's lack of customer service skills, and the overall uncleanliness of the restaurant were all major drawbacks. Hopefully, the management takes this feedback seriously and makes the necessary improvements to provide a better dining experience for future customers.

Hidden gem in Jackson heights, I went there because my regular Dosa place was closed for maintenance and boy, their Dosa and other foods are so authentic and delicious, owner and workers are very nice too and price is way reasonable.

NOT BAD AT ALL! ✔️ Fairly tasty ✔️ Nice environment ✔️ Affordable ✔️ Unlimited chutney & sambhar / dhal refills ⚠️ I received great service. But apparently that isn't always true. ⚠️ Portions are fair, but food doesn't fill you for long ❌ Stingy with the amount of Potato Masala We tried: Gobi Manchurian (Dry)( 3⭐) Butter Masala Dosa (3⭐) Overall, tasty food but just not a lot of it. About 2-3 hours after eating the one dosa we were all hungry again.

I am sorry 😞 very disappointed today. We ordered two maslaa dosa to go. And I mentioned to add chilies to the masala dhosa. But they forgot. Also gave us only 1 container of coconut chutney. Usually when we order in some other place they even provide extra chutneys. But here they just gave us one container. Secondly we didn't get tomato chutney. Common, if you are not having one chutney for today which you didn't give us. Atleast make your heart big enough to give extra coconut chutney. Why to act so cheap !! We are not ordering from this place again. Another thing to mention the dhosa was very soggy !! It would be nice if you learn how to pack!! We work for hotel industry !! This is not expected !! Not happy with your service

Dosa taste was good but went cold and very chewy. Lost its crispness . Upma was terrible. Sambar is a disgrace to South Indian food. Upma had no flavor. No salt No nuts no spice no cilantro garnish. . It felt like I was eating gooey bland dough. Sorry owners and I was hungry.!!!! Not the most pleasant and happy restaurant thus did a take out. Bad idea to take out. .. dosa loses its crispness and crunchy taste. Food overall is average and ambiance is a zero !!!! 1 star.

Had the most wonderful experience today at Samudhra. Went in just for a cup of masala tea, but decided to ordered a Masala dosa to go. The owners and staff were so welcoming and friendly and the atmosphere was relaxing, so I decided to enjoy my meal there instead. The food was incredible. The dosa and aloo were perfectly cooked with good flavor and the coconut chutney and accompanying lentil soup were amazing. The owner also offered me a complimentary serving of rice pudding, which was also delicious. The food and service here is excellent. I highly recommend. If you are the owner, thank you for making what could’ve been an ordinary take out experience, a lovely sit down experience. I didn’t think to take pic sorry.

I went there twice. I liked it so much the first time that I had to go back. I am not familiar with Indian food but thankfully my friend is and we had a great time. Don't ask me what I ate, because she ordered and I enjoyed it all. Definitely a place I will go back to.

Their butter masala Dosa was crispy, and mango lassi was very tasty. However, the sambar-chatni was okay. My friend also found Thali above average. The ambience wasn't great though. It's dark and hot inside.

Samudra (which means sea or ocean) is a great option for South Indian food. It is unassuming with friendly staff and good food. The food came out fresh and fast. Will definitely be returning.
