My
recent
trip
to
Petsmart
on
Lawrence
Avenue
was
a
letdown
from
start
to
finish.
The
fish
tanks
were
a
mess,
with
some
fish
chomping
on
their
dead
buddies.
Michael,
the
guy
incharge,
seemed
uninterested
in
doing
much
about
it.
As
I
was
excitedly
checking
out
the
fish,
Michael's
lazy
tank-cleaning
effort
didn't
match
my
enthusiasm.
He
was
sponging
off
the
front
glass,
mixing
dirt
with
water.
There
were
dead
fish
stuck
between
the
glass
and
the
filter,
making
the
whole
scene
look
like
a
weird
"fish
salad."
I
asked
Michael
my
questions
about
getting
a
fish.
He
told
me
that
with
3
gallons
fish
tank
I
could
get
a
shrimp
or
come
back
after
I
get
a
bigger
tank.
I
said
I
I
will
upgrade
my
tank
because
I
have
Amazon
prime
and
I
have
some
5
gallons
tank
in
my
cart
which
can
arrive
tomorrow.
Michael
shut
me
down
with
a
blunt
"Yeah,
I'm
not
gonna
sell
you."
Confused
and
frustrated,
I
wondered
if
there
was
some
secret
rule
I
missed.
Seeking
help
from
another
staff
member,
I
got
scolded
by
a
lady
who
told
me
to
find
someone
handling
pets.
Not
the
welcoming
vibe
I
was
expecting
for
my
first
time
at
Petsmart.
She
said
“Yeah,
there
is
a
button
press
that!!”
and
gave
me
a
look.
I
felt
so
upset
because
it
was
my
first
time
at
petsmart
and
people
treated
me
like
I
am
stupid
with
their
look
and
tone.
Anyway,
I
again
said
Michael
that
I
can
quickly
get
a
bigger
one
because
I
have
amazon
prime
which
will
be
delivered
tomorrow
morning.
I
explained
I
am
so
excited
to
get
a
fish
today
and
take
best
care
of
it.
He
said
“yeah
Im
not
gonna
sell
you”
and
I
got
mad
at
his
tone.
I
said
“Who
are
you
exactly?
Could
you
show
me
where
does
it
say
that
I
cant
get
one?
“
I
asked
for
a
formal
rule.
“I
am
not
gonna
sell
you
a
fish”
is
a
bit
too
confident
for
a
worker
to
tell
a
customer.
No
written
authority,
no
formal
right.
But
he
said
“yeah
I
wont
sell
you.
Its
my
choice.”
Then
I
called
my
boyfriend
to
get
me
a
bigger
tank
tonight
and
he
said
okay.
Because
I
didnt
want
to
buy
from
them.
Then
I
said
Michael
that
he
will
find
a
tank
for
me
before
I
arrive
home.
He
said
“show
me
a
picture”
and
I
got
mad
I
said
“where
does
it
say
that
a
person
has
to
prove
you
the
tank
size?!”
and
he
kept
saying
“Im
not
gonna
sell
you,
you
can
get
a
tank
from
us
so
I
can
sell
you
a
fish”
I
said
“
I
can
get
a
tank
from
anywhere
today
why
would
I
buy
from
you.”
Then
he
said
“you
can
talk
to
my
manager
if
you
want”
and
the
manager
said
that
just
because
I
said
“he
will
get
me
a
bigger
tank
tonight”
after
I
told
“I
have
a
small
tank”
simply
they
assumed
me
of
lying.
I
could
have
lied
and
gotten
the
fish
at
first
place
but
I
wanted
to
be
honest.
They
blamed
me
for
lying
and
the
way
of
selling
“Im
not
gonna
sell
you”
sounds
so
rude
and
bad.
I
could
have
said
I
have
30
gallon
tank
and
put
the
fish
in
a
teacup?
Who
would
have
known?
Nobody.
Although
I
explained
thousand
times
that
I
understand
they
are
trying
to
be
protective,
accusing
me
for
lying
or
asking
for
proof
is
beyond
limit.
If
they
could
have
showed
me
a
written
terms
or
rules,
I
would
have
accepted
it
but
this
is
not
okay.
People
cannot
decide
spontenously
who
to
sell
products
and
who
not
to
sell.
Also,
forcing
people
to
buy
tank
ONLY
FROM
THEM
to
get
a
fish
is
a
sh*tty
selling
tecnique.
Despite
the
hurdles,
I
pressed
on
to
get
a
fish.
The
manager
helped
me
with
a
nicer
tone
and
showed
me
a
betta
fish.
In
a
very
small
cup.
The
irony,
right?
Finally,
I
got
a
betta
fish,
but
the
whole
experience
was
embarrassing.
They
made
me
almost
cry.
I
understand
the
tank
size
is
important
(for
sure!!)
but
nobody
can
prove
them
the
tanks
while
the
fish
at
their
own
store
dying
and
kept
in
cups.
The
only
thing
I
am
happy
about
saving
a
betta
fish
kept
in
a
smallest
(coffee
cup
size)
cup
to
save
money
(Bettas
cannot
get
along
with
other
fish
so
many
trashy
pet
stores
keep
them
in
very
tiny
cups
to
avoid
giving
each
of
them
separate
bowls)
and
yet
they
are
talking
about
tanks
sizes.
You
first
keep
your
own
fish
alive!!
Because
right
now,
my
Betta
is
very
happy
to
have
a
friendly,
loving
owner
despite
their
accusations.
