👍 Expected it to be easier to find vegetarian and vegan friendly food in famous Nozawa onsen but it's one of the most difficult places I've been to in Japan even in western style eateries like this. The cucumbers and miso, wedges and tofu kimche burger were the closest options I could find in the town... People often mention coffee, breakfast, staff, cafe, menu, good, great, recommend, open, early,

Expected it to be easier to find vegetarian and vegan friendly food in famous Nozawa onsen but it's one of the most difficult places I've been to in Japan even in western style eateries like this. The cucumbers and miso, wedges and tofu kimche burger were the closest options I could find in the town so I was glad it was available but likely the miso & kimche made with fish stock. It would be great if staff suggested alternatives. It looks like they have plantbased milk for coffee, so it would be great to see at least one designated vegan or vegetarian item on the menu for easy ordering as well. It doesn't look like avocado toast is available now. The hand drip coffee was good, staff were nice and lots of comfortable seating available. Good to see reusables in place, only single use plastic is wrap on wet towel oshibori.

The food and service were alright, but the price was way higher than what they offered. The cheapest option was 4,800yen for 1 starter and 1 main plate. Reserved the place for 2 in advance and couldn't see dinner (official) menu due to website error, so I could only see menu posted by other people, which is definitely NOT what they have for dinner. Once I got there and saw the menu, either I had to pay 4,800yen at least or pay the cancellation fees for 1,000yen per person. Well... So we stayed. What I got: - The free snack was a palm-sized bowl of Edamame (Japanese green beans) - The starter was a salmon cucumber with cream to eat with crackers - priced 1,800yen in receipt - The main was <10cm beef shortribs, which tastes like belly than shortribs :) - And one small bowl of rice was served for TWO people, not separately I'd be happy to pay MAX 3000yen for that. All staff were able to speak English, good manners, nice atmosphere and the food was alright. To restaurant: I'd love it if more options were available to choose from, fix the online menu and better pricing for what you are offering. :)

We recently dined at Tanuki, drawn in by its clean, modern ambiance and the friendly staff. However, the experience was less than stellar. The website’s menu was inaccessible, leaving us unprepared for the limited and pricey 2-course (¥4800) or 3-course (¥5900) options. Canceling the reservation would have cost us ¥2000, so we decided to keep our reservation. Expecting quality to justify the cost, we were let down. The portions were small, with both the starter and main leaving us unsatisfied and hungry. The offer of a single bowl of rice to share between us after a ¥9600 meal felt almost laughable. While we can’t recommend Tanuki for dinner, the breakfast offerings do seem promising.

Great breakfast, very yummy hot chocolate. Good selection of breakfast option and they open early. One of the cafe that you can find foreigner is the staff and can understand English. The souvenirs stall is quite cute too can shop and get something.

This is such a great spot to warm up and relax from the cold! I spent a slow day here - I enjoyed a cafe mocha, the sausage rolls, and French fries. A live music band came in around 1 PM - they were fantastic! They paid pop instrumental songs and made a relaxed vibe! The staff were so kind - I did keep ordering a snack or drink every 30 minutes or so, but I didn't feel rushed to leave and sat and read for a while (it was not a crowded time). Highly recommend!

Nice looking cafe. Found it while walking around the town on a Sunday. I enjoyed their Reuben sandwich which had an Asian twist; it's my recommend when going here for lunch or breakfast and are in the mood for bread. The burger was quite pricey but understandably so after sinking our teeth into it. There were beers from 3 different breweries in the area, as well as one from Southern Nagano. We weren't planning on staying long but it had a relaxing ambience and wifi so we had some of their baked goods too! The Greek Walnut cookies were only 250 yen each and I regret not bringing home some. IF you're into maps like I am, you'll like that their wall has an illustration of the 14 (?) onsens in the area. We asked for a recommendation and the staff was knowledgeable on where the ones with outdoor baths or saunas were, as well as how much they would cost. We didn't find out earlier but the restaurant had parking 3-5 minutes away from the place.

During our long weekend in Nozawa we ate here twice, once for lunch and once for breakfast. It’s one of the few places in the village area open and serving food all day. It’s also in a great location at the base of the hill going up to the moving walkway. The wagyu cheeseburger was very good and the French toast with apple jam was excellent too. Coffee is also really good here. Already missing their flat whites!

Cozy coffee shop. Most importantly, this cafe opens early at 7:30. Delicious breakfast and wide selection of coffee. Nice presentation on the table. It lifts my spirits. I recommend to all!!!

Came here for lunch a few days ago. A really nice cafe with great ambiance! The food was delicious and the presentation was beautiful! I have also came here a few times for breakfast and I recommend trying their Japanese style breakfast! The coffee is also really good as well as their baked goods! Can't wait to come back in the winter.

One of the best set menu in town. All the food is well prepared and served in order. They served a set course with starter main and desert you can choose from 2 courses or 3 courses. The price is valued for money highly recommended.

Amazing sausage rolls, matcha lattes, hot chocolates and my coffee addicted mother loves their coffee. “If we found this cafe earlier, we wouldn’t have done as much skiing as we have” she said. Their pastry is on pointe. The sweet pasties were also a delight. I live 2 prefecture over and I am mind blown that sometimes so well executed exists in a small (but busy) village. Please open a cafe in my town.

An easy 5*. The staff were great, the space was lovely, and the food and coffee were absolutely top notch. Probably the best coffee I've had in Japan. Highly, recommend for breakfast.

Newly opened sushi restaurant is top notch. The intimate setting, the kind people, and most of all, the most delicate and fresh sushi. It felt high scale but not pretentious; a difficult balance to strike! Want to keep this place a secret but also want to help get the word out.

Great western style brekkie place. Last order for breakfast is 10.30, which is a bit too early to my taste. Staff often forgets/mixes up what you ordered, so ask them to repeat it back to you :)

Excellent coffee, warm atmosphere, open early. I went there early in the morning at 7am: it was the only place open in the village. I ordered a long black. It was simply delicious, full of flavours. The waitress served it with a little glass of sparkling water, to refresh the mouth before tasting the coffee: indeed It enhanced the flavour. While sipping my beverage, I could hear on top of the background chill music the chatters and laughters of the staff. This place has good vibes. I will come back.

Lovely breakfast - wholesome, tasty, comforting. Eggs Benedict, perfectly runny, with dollops of hollandaise and crispy bacon. All mounted on top of sir dough bread, crunchy on the outside door on the inside. Lovely coffee. Sets you off perfectly for a day of skiing. Decadent hot chocolate to be assembled by you.

Possibly the best coffee my wife has had in Japan. Nice brownies and cookies too. Lovely relaxing decor and music.

Very good breakfast, made to order and prepared “western style”. They open early enough so you can start skiing when the mountain opens.

I love their pastries and atmosphere, and this is a nice place for brunch or work from cafe in town. I hope they have more vegetarian options available in the future though!

We had an amazing teppanyaki dinner last night. Chef Ryu is fantastic. The atmosphere was purely magic. The birthday boy and girls and the guests all had a wonderful feast.
