Woke up this morning at 09;00 to start my business day. Went to the restaurant and breakfast 🍳 all gone. That's right .. breakfast ends at 09:00 in morning and they leave u hungry. Asked for manager..however he was not available (probably having breakfast somewhere). Too bad as hotel is quite well. But to deny a breakfast which is just an egg and piece of fruit..just don't make sense.

Lots of stray dogs living at the back of this property; they are noisy barking all night and aggressive when you walk past. The hotel needs to sort this out and Tonga more broadly needs to fix the stray dog population.

I don’t think it deserves a star. Emerald Hotel is the worst hotel and it has the worst customer service ever. I had booked online and paid got a confirmation email that everything was okay. I turned up in Tonga and the receptionist lied straight to my face saying that the room we booked was under maintenance and told Expedia that they were overbooked. I turned up the next day demanding my refund because they said the money has not been taken out, when my bank account shows that the money was taken out. We ended going to the police and a lawyer to sort this refund. This hotel ruined my vacation and I would not recommend anyone to stay here, because they are not worth the stress when you want to go on a vacation.

Reading all the negative reviews have me scared and expect the worst. Planning a trip this weekend July 8-16. I pray for the best and will update this review once I'm and again when I've checked out. If management is reading these reviews, please 🙏 don't disappoint me. 12July- I had very low expectations. The room was better than I expected. We had the largest of all the patios and enjoy sipping coffee and watching the world leisurly pass us by. Usual maintenance is needed ie; lime on faucets, tile cracks, furniture updates...for for the price you pay, this isn't the Ritz. It's still a great deal for location, beach front and a working washroom. Rooms are larger than other hotels. We could have slept 6 on our room. Restaurant- definitely the 1 star. We got served day(s) old white rice. Smelled old, tasted old. Don't expect too much and you won't be disappointed. The best thing about the restaurant is the coffee. It's brewed, strong and black. I read earlier about stray dog on someone's review- best advice- they don't bother anyone and they do bark. They don't belong to the hotel. If they did, would have been eaten by now. No joke. Went to a luau and dog was served as one of the mains. Lost my appetite.

Not worth the money compared to some of the nice home stays and lodges around. No wifi, except for the poor connection in lobby, and there were a bunch of hidden fees in the price of the room. We had to ask to change rooms because of water damage and mould; however, Nai who helped us was wonderful and very accommodating and she made our experience so much better. We didn’t eat at the restaurant but the breakfast included was a nice fruit platter, hard boiled egg, toast, and coffee which was nice. Being right across from the water is nice but I would never stay here again.

My wife and I are a couple from Canada arriving here at 1:00am from our Fiji flight unannounced, and we were received with open arms. The manager went above and beyond and made us feel very welcomed...! Not only did he take us on a informative driving tour of the island (lunch included), the next day, he personally helped us arrange our flights to America Samoa with a travel agent too, and return transport to the airport at the end of our stay. From the super friendly staff, great on sight restaurant, laundry service, and more... we were very satisfied with our stay here and hope to return one day.

Does NOT appear like the photos! Complete let down as soon as we arrived. Ana was nice & friendly. We initially complained to her about our situation but she was new. Had to clean up the bathroom ourselves at check in, TV not working, dust bunnies everywhere. No elevator, no screens on the windows. Horrible experience! avoid a headache and DO NOT STAY! the "boss" or "owner" will fight you for a refund!

I recently stayed at Emerald Hotel in Tonga for a business trip. Honestly, I was looking forward to it based on some reviews, but the reality was a letdown. Let's start with the good - the staff were really nice and the location is super central, making it easy to get around. But that's where the good stuff ends. The rooms are a letdown, especially for what you pay. They feel outdated and not up to the mark. As for the bathrooms, if I have to rate them against what I'm used to in Western hotels, they get a 1 out of 10 from me. They seriously need an upgrade. I've seen some 5-star reviews online and can't help but wonder what those guests were impressed by. Maybe my expectations are different, as I usually stay in 4 or 4.5-star hotels for work. But honestly, Emerald Hotel didn't hit the mark for me. My advice? If you're in Tonga for work and used to a certain standard, it's worth paying a bit more for a better place. I switched to Tanoa International Hotel next door and it was night and day. Cleaner, nicer, just better all around. So, if you're looking for a comfortable stay in Tonga, especially on business, I'd say skip Emerald Hotel. Your peace of mind and comfort are worth the extra bucks.

The staff here was very friendly and helpful. The bed was the equivalent of sleeping on a sheet of plywood with a thin sponge on top. If you like a very firm mattress, you'll love these. For us mere mortals, sleeping on the sofa in the lobby seemed like a better idea. The included breakfast is adequate. While they offer wifi throughout the hotel, it's barely usable for email.

I called the hotel asking for prices to book a room and the person who picked up the phone was very rude. He asked me why would I call the hotel asking for prices, and I was like isn't it so I know which room to pay for🤦‍♂️. I reccomend know one to go here, very poor customer service.

They say there are safes in the room, but there aren't. Door doesn't lock. But it's clean and functional, although rather spartan.

The hotel is conveniently located which is about the only positive thing I can say about it. The building itself is in need of a complete refresh, fixtures and fittings are old, broken or rusty. The room was spacious but the bathroom chrome fittings (taps, rails etc.) looked like they had never been cleaned. The water was either so hot it took your skin off or freezing cold and the shower head was so clogged with scale that you had to run around the shower cubicle to ensure complete coverage. All of the electrics were as dodgy as f@ck. I got shocks from the bed-side light every time I touched it. The air-con was noisy and frequently decided it just couldn't be arsed to play at all. Other items had plugs rammed into sockets that were not designed to take them, these I simply avoided altogether. I couldn't open the windows as my room was above what I can only assume is the dirtiest kitchen in the world ever and the smell was nauseating. I tried the restaurant. Once. The greasy, foul smelling 'ribs' looked more like finger bones and tasted of grease and old garlic. The rice was just as bad and I left the meal and went to find something that was even marginally edible. Other reviews mention how friendly the staff were. Unfortunately the only timesI interacted with any of them was my 'airport transfer' in a car that smelled like someone had slaughtered a pig in It three weeks beforehand and left the carcass in there to rot. The driver had all the conversational skills and warmth of a great white shark. The other interaction was when my key dropped its program and I had to get it reprogrammed when not a word was spoken. But what about checkout I hear you cry. As usual the desk was unoccupied and after searching for 10 minutes I just dumped the key and made my break for freedom (foregoing the pre-paid airport transfer, once was enough). This was my first trip to Tonga, I hope it's not my last, but one thing is certain. It is my last stay at the Emerald Hotel. I wouldn't even recommend it to a tramp who smells of piss and lives under a bridge in a rubbish dump.

Well unfortunately for the Emerald it's situated next to the refurbished Tano on the front in Nuku'alofa which is much nicer. The Emerald is dated and on the shabby side. Room service is intermittent, the bed was made every day but the cleaning left a lot to be desired, with more hair on the bathroom floor after it had been cleaned (my hair isn't that long & is grey). Glasses & cups were not cleaned, however they were dirty in the first place. Absolutely no information in my room, etc. I could go on but I've got better things to do. In the Emeralds defence though it has a very good Cantonese restaurant, the staff are lovely which is a shame as they are a miss match with the surroundings. My stay was through work and I had no choice in hotel. Would I choose to stay? Not by my own choice, although I would recommend eating there.

I found the food pleasant yet average compared with what I have experienced overseas. This assessment may be a little unfair however, as I visited this place shortly after Cyclone Gita had damaged Tonga badly and fresh produce was in short supply. This is a licensed restaurant with quite a reasonable range of drinks on offer. The staff are quite friendly and attentive, but you can sometimes experience a lengthy wait for meals at peak times. They have large round tables perfect for larger groups. Food comes out in no particular order (typical of my experience in many Chinese restaurants) - so if you really want those spring rolls as an entree, make sure you specify that to the staff.

Staff were friendly. My room was comfortable and spacious. They even delivered food and drinks from the restaurant which was great. They could think about some alternative power solution to avoid power cuts especially on the weekend also my phone charger got dangerously hot. They could also change the toilet cause it was real easy to clog

I haven’t stayed here but the Chinese restaurant on the ground floor is pretty dope. We had fried chicken, mapotofu, fried rice, fried eggplant... list goes on. It I wasn’t disappointed with all of them apart from Singaporean noodle, it’s not what it says it is. Vermicelli noodle with standard chicken stock powder. But everything else is totally on point. Cheap meal as well!

Good Chinese restaurant here, I'm not sure why Google maps only lists it as a hotel. The restaurant is the draw card. It's very popular with locals and for good reason. Really good (mainland) Chinese cooking. Lots of seafood and vegetable dishes. I eat here every time I'm in Tonga, sometimes several times. It's really good.

There is always hair in our food and this is not the first time that this has happened, they should wear hairnets and use gloves. There were hairstrands in two different dishes that we ordered, that was just a total put off. Too many flies inside, they need mosquito nets on their windows. The tables weren't wiped down properly, I saw a booger right by my plate. Also, the restaurant has been suspended a couple of times due to failing to meet the hygiene standards of their kitchen by the ministry of health.

the Web site is incorrect and misleading! • The noise from vehicles music shaking windows this combined with “hotel” dogs barking and no air conditioning made it near impossible to sleep. • the “Continental “breakfast consisted of tea/coffee and eggs! • the “Restaurant” was no more than a Chinese takeaway with limited food options (Partner Celiac) • after the first meal we had diarrhoea for the remainder of our stay • Toilet seat broken • Initially we had no hot water due to the taps incorrectly labelled (which could be dangerous) • Mini Bar- is a fridge on the floor • Not being able to turn lights off unless all power was disconnected – so unable to: keep any food (yoghurt)for Celiac Partner as heat turned it, or have cold water…. • Broken/ damaged furniture. • This was an “Executive sweet” !! ?? • Generally everything tired and run down

Originally booked 12 nights stay at the Emerald, only being forced to check out after 2 nights due to horrific bed bugs and having to have an emergency trip to a nurse for treatment of the bites which covered my body so badly and swelled so much I couldn’t walk. I showed the staff when leaving and she said no one was working and she would tell someone. I never heard from the staff. Then had to pay to check in somewhere else and be put under huge financial stress. Requested a refund which I have not received and I have emailed everyday. They have now stopped replying. We had to change our flights to leave the country early. Huge money loss. I would never ever stay here again.
