Highly recommendable. A truly fabulous place to visit and a big part of the Berlin history during the Cold War. Been there two times with different guides. Both told different stories and were very enthusiastic about the tour. I recommend watching the German movie "The Lives of Others" before the visit. Expect to use about two hours for the visit.

Wonderful museum and guided tour. The tour is a must as the guides are former inmates and can explain exactly how the place operated. At face value the prison and interrogation centres look ordinary; yet the whole place uses careful and subtle psychological means of abusing inmates. Often its residents were there under little pretext, other than being politically undesirable. The place is vast and looks like a soviet style housing complex. Tremendous value at €6 and easy to access by tram.

Fascinating prison turned museum from the DDR time. There were 17 such prisons in DDR at the time but none was more secret than the Hohenschönhausen prison. We took a guided tour which lasted two hours. Lots of interesting and rather amazing details about the prison, the inmates (political prisoners) but also details about the horrific psychological torture people here were subjected to. Our tour guide was very detailed, perhaps asking a bit too many rhetorical questions and diving too deep into some points. Nonetheless it was a great experience and we can highly recommend a visit.

Very important to see this place. Only possible to see it by means of a guided tour. Tours are conducted at particular times only, and must be paid for at the ticket counter. Take cash! There is a lot to see, and the guide is passionate. May be impossible to form an adequate understanding of the GDR without coming here.

Undoubtedly, I recommend this place to everyone that goes to Berlin! It was the most interesting museum that we got the chance to visit! I was really overwhelmed by the guy that took us around, he definitely gave his best and more to explain and re-create the whole situation that people experienced there back then even the way that they were treated and talked to! I loved it!

We had an excellent tour; our guide had been a political prisoner here in 1983. Her crime was planning an escape attempt out of the GDR. This is an important site to visit to learn what mankind is capable of. It's creepy and educational.

One of those places you just have to visit in order to get a grasp of the history that played during the DDR. Impressive tours of around 2 hours are held in English and German that tell the history of the former prison and highlight the importance of democracy. There is also a free exhibition with items from the prison on display.

Just a shame I'm not able to give more stars. Surely the best 6 euros I've ever spent. The guide was very friendly and gave us an amazing tour of the prison and loads and extremely interesting stories. Tour lasts about 2 hours.

(Translated by Google) We were very lucky to have a guided tour with Lothar Schulz. Very authentic and easy to understand. You can tell that Mr. Schulz is passionate about the matter. We loved to listen to him. Unfortunately, there were some restrictions in the museum due to Corona. Nevertheless, we think it is a must if you are already in Berlin. We would like to thank Mr. Schulz for the brief insight into his biography. (Translated by Google) Contemporary witnesses and historians achieve great things under suboptimal conditions! It's just the ones who are directly with the group! Sometimes four tours without a break, and that with sometimes brain-dead visitors, (unfortunately it also happens) that you should hold out first, great! Interesting, interactive, and the tour guides are the people that have already serve their time in this prison in the time of GDR. I can highly recommend this place for the visit. Especially if you would like something to learn about German history after the WWII.

Excellent exhibition and tour. The tour guide was highly knowledgeable (not an ex-inmate but was able to recount their stories, and his own stories of growing up in the GDR). The tour lasted approximately 90 minutes, after which we were free to explore the prison. Everything has been perfectly preserved. Book in advance to ensure a place on a tour (numbers are limited) - superb value at €8.

A very interesting museum. Unfortunately we missed the tour by 15 minutes, so we could only see the museum. Luckily the museum itself was really interesting, even more so because the building is so original. It's probably not worth getting the tram all the way out there unless you're going on the tour as well, but the free museum is still good.

(Translated by Google) Especially do the tour! Small groups (max 15) and impressively told. 80 minutes fly by. English-language tour is great, German-speaking even better, given by ex "prisoners". Even when you are 15 it will silence you! And of course watch the Weissensee series (netflix). (Original) Vooral de rondleiding doen! Kleine groepen (max 15) en indrukwekkend verteld. 80 minuten vliegen voorbij. (Translated by Google) The memorial itself speaks for itself. Everything is said. However, we reached into the toilet when we made the reservation. The day before, we reserved an appointment for 1:30 p.m., which was booked out today without considering us. When I bought the tickets for the tour offered at 2:30 p.m., I was served by such an arrogant and snooty employee who does not do justice to this facility.

Tanya was our guide for our English language tour around this fascinating but but chilling memorial. She was immensely knowledgeable and passionate about the memorial. It is hugely important that all of this is very recent history. Some of the guides and workers in the memorial being actual inmates of the prison when it was in operation. It is certainly worth a visit and is very educational and helps ensure the memory of such places are not forgotten. Certainly worth a visit. Very poignant. We must not let this happen again.

We had a real good tour, entertaining and jet very respectful. The whole location is very impressive and mind boggling, on how cruel people can be, when you have different thoughts and opinions, but also how strong people can be hanging on to they're believes.

Definitely recommend coming here if you're in Berlin for a few days.. Second time coming onto the tour and the tour guides paint an excellent picture of the sufferings endured. Special thanks to Liam, our tour guide - knowledgeable, passionate, engaging - everything you want from a tour guide! Really nice bloke too with wit and humour. Thanks Liam for making our tour and trip more meaningful.

Oppression is the lesson here. While few former prisoners give tours, it is commonly know that former Stasi guards still remain in the neighborhood since the collapse of the Soviet Union. Construction to the Weimar era building was happening while visited should be completed by the summer. I personally preferred this tour over the Stasi Headquarters, because our tour guide at the other location was clearly a Stasi sympathizer. Something that’s very dangerous because this individual was only regurgitating propaganda that justified that actions of the Stasi. This one guide felt no remorse for the people imprisoned there. Something very dangerous to teach in a society to treated everyone as guilty until proven innocent. The prison had a shakedown area, control center, panic alarm, and interrogation rooms.

If i could give this 7 stars i would! My groups assigned guide was named Dylan. He was one of the most knowledgeable people I’ve ever met! He spoke entusiastically and clearly about the prisons history. He also linked diffrent parts of the prison to the Stasi regime, in a way that made you get a very deep understanding og how the regime operated. Also in the prison. He was very kind, and encuraged us to awenser questions of which he awensered enthusiastically. For the place itself, it was very interesting to visit the place. Truely astonishing.

An experience not to be missed when in Berlin. Our guide (Greek lady) was extremely informative and well versed in the history of the place. A great experience with a great guide. Please note backpacks are not allowed in the museum and you need to put them in lockers which only accept coins.

This monument is a must see when visiting Berlin in my opinion. You might consider skipping it because it's quite far from the city centre, but don't; go see it. We booked an English tour given by mister Zimmerman, who was in the prison himself for 6 months. The tour really gave me chills down my spine a few times. Thank you again mister Zimmerman. PS) You can (and have to) book the tour online in advance. You can't walk around inside without a booked tour.

Definitely book a tour guide for this experience, it makes way more sense. You are lead into a cinema room where there is an introductory film before a guide picks you up and takes you on an around 2 hour long tour of the prison. Informative and something you definitely shouldn’t miss :)

Very interesting museum/memorial, but the best part about this visit was our tour guide. I’ve never seen a man talking with so much passion and enthusiasm about a subject with so much knowledge. (Translated by Google) We booked the guided tour in July of this year and it was clear to us that we had to adhere to corona restrictions, but at 30 degrees it was a bit strange to order a mask requirement on the entire site while observing the distance requirement. The day before, we had experienced exactly the opposite during a guided tour of the Berliner Unterwelten e.V. In addition, we were forbidden to drink in a very unfriendly manner, although we were kept away from the group (due to corona) and we were always drinking outside in the courtyard. The tour clearly depends on the guide. We were unlucky that our guide did not have German as his mother tongue and unfortunately spoke with such a strong accent that you could hardly follow the explanations. Unfortunately, the participants were approached very unfriendly by the guide several times if they did not move fast enough in the individual cells and other rooms. So the scope of this memorial did not come into play during the tour and I would recommend subsequent visitors to inquire beforehand who the guide will be.

(Translated by Google) At any time, again and again, without need, anywhere in the world. It is almost unbelievable what we do to each other, even for things that are objectively not even worth mentioning. From my point of view, a very good, impressive memorial, which can also be walked through with a very good, entertaining audio guide that is provided free of charge. Divided into subject areas such as: surveillance, interrogation, violence against prisoners, etc. are interrogation protocols, cell inventory, things to enforce coercive measures and much more on display. The audio guide gives brief, informative notes on this. Contemporary witnesses have their say on each topic, and their experiences can be listened to via the guide. It is possible to walk through the rooms of the former prison director. We highly recommend the tour of the prison grounds led by a former prisoner. The cells are shown, the interrogation rooms, a prisoner transport, a wagon for transporting prisoners, to name just a few. During our tour it was very interesting, selective, sensitive but never pathetically told how and why the prison was held and what experiences had been made in prison. It is worth asking if you have not understood something or want to know more.

It gives a very interesting insight into the conditions of detention that prevailed at that time and into the procedures with which people were tried to break. Unfortunately, due to renovation work, only part of the facility can be visited. After the construction work, we will do another tour and see the rest! Important! It is only worth visiting if you book a guided tour, otherwise there is only a small exhibition to visit. It is best to arrange it online / by phone, otherwise you may have to travel twice. (Translated by Google) Impressive place. Great tour with very interesting descriptions. Should be compulsory in schools to look at something like that and grasp the topic of freedom and human rights and not to take it for granted. (Original) Beeindruckender Ort.

(Translated by Google) Kind leader. Very interesting and moving story, because the group leader was a witness and told us the story up close, you could imagine the situation all the better. I also found the group size of 14 people optimal. Unfortunately not much seen from the inside due to corona and restoration work. You should have a look at the exhibition, you can also do it without tickets and a tour.

Very interesting and thought provoking. Tour was lead by former prisoner who gave a very personal recount of how imprisonment could happen and what being imprisoned was like in the early eighties. At times hard to listen to as human cruelty became very real, but also important to witness and understand. Top experience during Berlin visit.

Super cool place. They even managed to find an English speaking guide for us even though we could only book the German guide due to our own timing issue. Thanks a lot!

Must see for history buffs. The prison is well-preserved and the experience worth your time; however, know that the tour is approximately 1.5 hours long and your experience varies depending upon your guide.

Two stars, only because I've had an absolutely amazing guided tour here a few years ago, but when I tried to book a guided tour for this September in June we were told we could only do an outside tour as a single group because of Corona. But when I tried to enquire whether we could do two separate indoor tours to accommodate all of us, it took them 2,5 month to get back to me, only to tell me all the indoor tours were booked solid.

A quite exceptional tour guide (British/French) who was very informative and knowledgeable. The tour was lengthy with a lot to take in - I liked that it was so thorough, but be prepared to be standing for over 90 minutes. Highly recommended.

We had a tour done by Liam, who was a very knowledgeable and fun guide to have. Remember to pre book, some visitors arrived without tickets and were rejected as the tour we were on was already full.

A must for every Grrman citizen and everyone who is interested in German history or in what humans are capable of doing to each other. You can only get in with a guided tour. We had Mrs Fast, a historian, and enjoyed her tour very much.

We visited for a tour (€6 each) and spent almost 2 hours with Andrea, an exceptional guide, who gave a very informative view of Soviet rule during the time of segregated Germany. We also learnt about the conditions of prisoners and saw inside the cells. Thank you so much for an excellent visit.

The one thing in Berlin you absolutely must visit. Harrowing stories told by expert guides in a captivating way - often by former prisoners themselves in the German language version. You will need to book in advance and can do so on the website. Bring a mask as (as of Aug 22) you are still required to wear one inside.

It's definitely not a place to go for a fun time. However, if you brace yourself, this is a perfect place and way to learn about dark sides of the DDR past ruled by secret police and network of informants who could have been your neighbours, friends or even members of your own family...

Must visit place if you want to understand more about the horrors of the Stasi practices in the GDR. It's on the outskirts of Berlin, but definitely worth the travel time. A bus stops close by!

Amazing value for money, very cheap and incredibly insightful, highly recommended for fans of dark corners of history and people interested in psychological torture.

A very sobering experience. My tour guide was a prisoner in a Stassi camp for 10 months. To learn from someone who went through this horrible ordeal was so informative and allowed me to have a deeper understanding of what happened in these camps. Tours are available in German, English, and Russian. 10/10

I came to the museum for a guided tour (in the English language) on the 14th of February at 10:40. I was thoroughly impressed by the museum. After getting a sticker in the visitors' reception, you're free to browse a selection of historical books in various languages, including English and German focusing on the history of Germany from the Weimar Republic onwards, as well as the city of Berlin, particularly focusing on the division of Germany and the events leading to the fall of the Berlin Wall. While the selection of books is vast, one thing I noticed was the stark disparity in price between buying a book from the book shop here and buying online (I looked online before buying a book that piqued my interest and it was substantially more expensive). The cafeteria is small and basic (I didn't purchase anything from there), but that's to be expected. This is also where you go to wait for a guided tour, and I found it slightly strange that very few signs indicate this. Even though the person told me this is where to wait, I still had my doubts and feared that my tour group would embark on their tour without me. However, my concerns were unwarranted and the guide came in just before the scheduled start of the tour. The tour consisted of a small group of around 15 of us (didn't take note of the actual number) and the guide was very professional and spoke English to a very high standard. At every part of the tour, he gave us a great amount of information, including explaining the specific function of Hohenschoenhausen as a remand prison and that it never actually housed people who had commited conventional crimes (such as murder), but rather people who held views that went against those of the Socialist Unity Party. The inside of both the new and old buildings of the prison is spacious, although if you're tall, you will need to mind your head in the old building when entering a preserved cell. If you're claustrophobic and part of a large group tour, you may struggle with the parts that involve going into small rooms for explanations (such as the cell in the old building, reconstructed interrogation room in the new building and the garage) because the building wasn't designed with comfort in mind. In addition, the depth of the guide's knowledge on the torture techniques used by the Stasi to gain information was also very good (e.g how they managed to effectively force people to sleep poorly due to enforcing a particular sleeping posture). There is also very little light in the old building as there were no windows, preventing detainees from knowing what time of day it was, although the lighting improves in the new building. I was particularly impressed with the standard of maintenance of the building. It hasn't been allowed to fall into disrepair, but they've also managed to preserve what it was like at the time without modernising it, so you will be able to imagine what it was like for detainees, even though the majority of the original furniture is no longer there. As part of your tour, you'll be taken to a cell in the old building (which you can stand inside), a cell in the new building, an interrogation room (with replica furniture) and a garage: you can also see inside some of the rooms that you're not allowed to walk in, including an office in the new building and the area where prisoners had their mugshots taken. In the garage, you get to see an original vehicle used to transport prisoners and learn about how they concealed the location of the prison from detainees, including by going on long drives to trick prisoners in the transport van, which had no windows. After the conclusion of the tour when you exit the new building, I thoroughly recommend that you visit the exhibition in a separate building. It surprised me quite how long it took me to walk around here and digest all the information (almost 2 hours). The exhibition adds to what you learned in the guided tour, talking about the building's evolution from an industrial kitchen to a prison and about the experiences of detainees.

An important place to discover and understand how Russian and Stasi maintained order in GDR. Terror! The guides here are really capable of sharing the feelings and the information that this secret part of the city still has today. Go and visit to understand the ages between 1945 and 1989. Together with the Stasi museum is a fundamental step for understanding GDR and dictatorship mentality.

It was an in depth delve into the past of Germany past, sad and haevy how some people were treated during the time of the stazi abductions once they realise a citizen worked against them, it was the sight of intorogaton, improsinment, pain, suffering etc. Very educative I hugely recommend

The ticket for students costs only 4 euros. You have a guided tour of about 1:30 h. The guide seemed to be in a hurry and I needed to keep up with him to avoid missing info. I didn't like that but I understand they have limited time for each group. At the end of the tour, I found a train's wagon outside which was so interesting!

Incredible visit of a former communist prison with explanations by a guide who was himself an inmate as a political prisoner. A must see if you have 2 spare hours.

Fantastic tour by Jon who was enthusiastic and knowledgeable. We were lucky enough to visit during an off peak time meaning the tour group was small and the grounds weren’t completely full! Probably one of the best tours I’ve been on!
