Qissa Khwani-ancient bazaar gate which was gateway for South and Central Asia keeps alive centuries old tradition of storytelling with Qahwa like in tribal societies. A great place for food and hand made products like waistcoat, sandal, shoes, other variety products at an economical price. In addition there is a huge variety of food with its rich traditional cuisine.

Qissa Khwani Bazaar, Peshawar city, 1897 (taken from Kabli Gate right now), where you can see at the end of road a small hill which now levelled with the ground.

Since the ancin times, one of the most famous bazaars, located in the old city, entering from Kabuli gate (Kabuli drawaza) the gate that welcomed the caravans from central Asia through Afghanistan in past. Qissa Khwani derived from Persian words Qissa Khwan means the story tellers, however, the cafes in past used to welcome the travelers/traders from different parts of the world, so the professional story tellers used to tell the stories in these cafes, inns. In the center of the street, there were erected 2 monuments in the memory of the massacre of 23rd April 1930, when the British army killed some 400 demonstrators in this street, in the independence movement.

This is the most important gate named Kabuli gate just because of its direction towards Kabul, in the past the gate used to be closed before sunset & be opened at sunrise just to protect the population living inside the gate, as one enters the gate will get into Qissa Khawani bazar. Qissa Khawani bazar was famous for story tellers in the past, they used to tell stories to traders staying in the Caravansarais. But now its just tale of the past.

Connecting Qisakhwani with Khyberbazar, both are historically great places to visit. The oldest Lahori Sweets and the monument of the Shaheedan are almost at the same place.
