Wow!!!! Who would of thought this place would exist so close to the city. You feel like your on another planet. The rocks sometimes look like flying saucers that have crashed into earth. Easy hike with amazing views of the city skyline. I am 5’ 11” and 220lbs. I was able to get through fat mans pass. It seems to be more tight in the chest area. Very beautiful and fun!

Awesome place to visit for a pretty decent walk as a hiker and for what it's worse at the end to see this magnificent boulders that are stuck to each other leaving enough room for you to squeeze through makes it and all immersive experience, so you might need to get your backpack off to squeeze through and pull it through as well but it's not too thin I just need to get rid of my backpack since it was really big and it got stuck lol. There's some places you need to climb on rocks. There are tunnels as well, REMEMBER TO BRING WATER!!!

I'm an avid hiker on this Mormon-hidden valley trail, and absolutely recommend it. It's a nice hidden gem that feels like you're out of the city with a cool tunnel and rock squeeze. Just be careful to watch the signs for the trails, it can be confusing and easy to take a wrong turn.

The Hidden Valley trail, along with Fat Man’s pass is a fun trail with some spectacular views, beautiful rock formations, lots of nooks and crannies to explore and overall sheer joy to do. Just beware of highly competitive mountain bike riders who forget sometimes that they share a narrow hiking trail with pedestrians.

The best hike (view wise) ive been on. Fat mans pass is a bit of a climb but it is worth every step. You also need a gps, unless you know the trail. Its easy to get lost, or head off in another trail.

Always such a fun place for for a relatively easy hike. Definitely plenty of people around. It's fun to slide through fat man's pass on a hot day when the rocks are nice and cool.

Long hike, but it was fun for the cub scouts when we got there. Bring lots of water and wear good hiking shoes

It's a tight fit, but you can go around if needed. The rock is smooth from the passing of so many people squeezing through. :-)

Sonoran Desert, an easy hike close in to Phoenix. Busy enough in peak times. Dominated now by mountain bikers, 90% of whom are polite, safe and respect the rules. Carry a good deal of water, even in winter. Do not hike this in summer. It's an easy hike for those who like long walks. It has its ups and downs, literally. Wear hiking boots or shoes - trail can be sharp and sand/gravel/sloping rocks are slippery, even when dry. Stay on trail. Follow National Trail to the junction with the Hidden Valley Trail, which you take to your right at the obvious trail junction sign (pictured). At that point, it's steep and slippery for a few yards to Fat Man Pass (do not misunderstand the name's sarcasm. Even a fit adult must squeeze through). Beyond the squeeze is more lovely Sonoran Desert hiking, a short way to a short tunnel. I usually turn around at that point, having hiked 2 miles already. No restrooms at the parking lot - only down at the ranger statio and museum area.

Fat Man's Pass was fun. This was part of the group night hike. It was interesting to see the formation of two slabs pressed together and you had to squeeze in between for about what felt to be 45 seconds. Some people had to even take their backpacks off just to get through. It was a great experience.

Fun hike! Not too far or too difficult to find. Trail was easy to follow, with lots of connected trails to make the hike as long or as short as you want. Parking lot is tiny!!! (10-ish cars) We parked on a side street and walked a short distance to the trailhead.

Amazing crack in a rock in Phoenix. It is a good hike to the crack and a cool walk through the rock.

This trail is a lot of fun. The first part is quite hard to get to the loop as it's steep. But if you pace yourself, once you get to the loop it gets easier. The rock formations are impressive and worth seeing.

  • 5/5 Nicholas B. 2 years ago on Google
Fun part of the trail. Rock slide or a short rock scramble/climb (depending on which direction of the look you track) where you have to contort yourself through the rocks.

  • 5/5 Peter F. 1 year ago on Google
This was pretty cool! I thought maybe it would be slightly off the trail, but I love that you have to pass through it to move on; be aware of that if you have claustrophobia.

I haven't been up to Hidden Valley/ Fat Man's Pass in over 20 years. It's a real shame most of the Pictoglphs have eroded away. :(

  • 4/5 Brittney S. 2 years ago on Google
Saw the cool fat man's pass and tunnel just a longer, rocky hike to get there than expected. Parking is very limited- parked on an adjacent street. Very busy path at the start/end. Tennis shoes work but hiking shoes may be better for traction- slippery/sandy at times.

I really interesting hole. I was surprised to see some of the people go through the skinny man’s pass as well, I was honestly scared myself I wouldn’t fit, and after watching a few others I got through it thank God!

The mountains were beautiful but be careful bc the google map will take you to a trial in a rich neighborhood and that’s not how you start.

  • 5/5 Lorelei W. 8 months ago on Google
Nice casual hike with some good stretches to let pups run and some good rock scaling to practice on. Unfortunately could not make it through the pass myself, so I found a different way to climb up and over it xD

Beautiful scenery but the trails are extremely poorly marked with multiple branches, some paths cryptic and some frank, without any indication where to go.

Super cool place! Had no idea what to expect but so glad we made it there. We hiked via the morman trail and maricupa(I think) to get there. Great place to stop and take pictures!

  • 4/5 Jorge P. 4 years ago on Google
Fat Man's Pass, if anyone's wondering, gets its name from the fact that no fat man would be able to get through it (or at least, that's what I think). The view is totally worth the hike, although be prepared, the way up is tiring if you don't have a good physical condition.

  • 5/5 Giovanni's P. 4 years ago on Google
Awesome little area! If you are a fat man you will not pass! You will have to climb over the rock formations. This is a nice resting place on the Mormon trail loop as you begin to circle back.

You see this is the kind of place it just makes South Mountain Park so cool. There is also a small cave section of this park. And then there’s this part where you can squeeze between two big boulders. I will say be very very careful if you do not think you can squeeze through it it could be a catastrophe if you mess this up. But cool little things like this ad to South Mountain Park and just make this place is so cool.

This was absolutely a blast, especially in the August heat. There was not another person in sight except for my wife. Bring at least 1.5 gallons of water for the heat. I had serious doubts on whether I would make in through this but somehow I managed to squeeze through. Not fat yet, confirmed!

This is a hike from the Pima Canyon trailhead, and cannot be reached easily from the neighborhoods that appear to be nearby on Google Maps. It doesn’t show in Google Maps, but there’s a rugged, steep ridge (Guadalupe Range, about 700-800 ft elevation gain, and then you need to come down the other side, each way) running between the neighborhoods and Fat Man’s Pass. Hiking over the Guadalupe Range is an advanced hike and an all-day affair: there are limited trails, very steep switchbacks and loose gravel, large boulders, no signs, no shade and many Mojave rattlesnakes. Not a casual hike, especially with small children. Unless you are an experienced hiker and substantially prepared with topo maps, sufficient water and protective gear, I suggest you go to the Pima Canyon entrance and follow the well-marked trail.

I love fat mans pass. It’s tight enough that if you have too big of a belly you might get stuck. It’s short enough not to make you claustrophobic. The walls are smooth from so many people touching as they go through. Awesome spot.

Fun hike. Beautiful views. I didn't fit through the Fat Man's Pass (and expected that I wouldn't), but it's not a requirement for the hike. No facilities at trailhead. I would go again.
