A black owned business, tasty food and great service. I really love it here. Be prepared to eat with your hand, and remember this is the way it is, just like you are not supposed to eat a burger with chopsticks or eat sushi with fork and knife. One thing though, if I may make a suggestion, it could be better if waster is not served with disposable plastic cups. That’s not only environmental unfriendly, but also difficult to grab when you have oily hand. Overall, I love this place, love their food, and love the people here run this wonderful restaurant.

First time trying Ethiopian food and Barcote was definitely the real deal. Since this was our first time, we ordered the meat and veggie combo platter to try a little bit if everything. This dish is big enough to feed two people and might even leave you leftovers. Overall the taste was delicious! We sat inside because it was rainy and gloomy that day but they have a quaint outdoor patio area that I’m sure is just as great on sunny days.

Went with 2 gal pals because one needed gluten free food. This place nailed it. The vibe, the outdoor seating with shade, and especially the scents. The food was delicious and after chowing down for 3, we had all that food left over! Also, the Ethiopian Honey Wine was the perfect sweetness to go with the spice. Gluten free friendly delicious, a great start to the night!

The spices from the kitchen can be be enjoyed on front porch, throughout the clean and orderly interior and out to the comforting back patio. Reasonable prices, generous portions along with kind and prompt service. Tasty Ethiopian beers and unique coffee and overall great experience.

We got the Doro Wot and Beg Wot. Both were amazing with the Injera and salad! Our food and Ethiopian coffee came out quickly. Our server even provided extra Injera without having to ask! Great food and service!

Forever my favorite Ethiopian restaurant in the Bay. Super tasty, great owner. I've been coming here for a decade and I love it. The patio in the back is adorable. The dining room is cozy. Food comes out fast and service is friendly. Prices are very reasonable and, most importantly, the food is phenomenal. Highly highly recommend.

I am no expert in Ethiopian food as I have only ever been to one other establishment. This is definitely a small family-run kind of joint so set your expectations accordingly. The staff we're friendly and only ever seemed to be around when we needed them which was perfect. All the food we ordered was quite good. Definitely better than the first place I tried. I don't go to Berkeley often but I could definitely see eating here again.

Ive had my fair share of ethiopian food in the area and This the real real. The best value for your money. The veggie combo had a variety of different dishes to try. The portions are huge! Really authentic ethiopian food. Definitely gonna be a regular here.

My friend said this was her favorite Ethiopian and had to try! We had already gone to the one across the street and can now officially say Barcote wins with the really good injera and the salmon dulet/shira combo dishes we had! And for atmosphere in a cute backyard patio we both didn't know existed. We got there around 8pm and there was few seating left outside in back patio but plenty for the indoors and front patio space. Staff was friendly and the food was the best! Parking: free street parking can be found around the area on main or street over

Did a big takeout order and was taken aback because the prices on the receipt were significantly higher than their website. But the owner was nice and it feels good to support a local business. The food was good. Not my favorite Ethiopian but a solid choice.

Delicious food, great prices, kind service. Really fun and enjoyable dining experience, the raw beef and butter lamb really shine, and were stand out favorites. Injera was pleasantly tangy and be sure to ask for the spicy powder! It's not hot spicy but a rich accent to the main dishes. Would go there again!

Really lovely experience, with great flavors, stylish and atmospheric restaurant design and personal service by the owner. Their homemade honey wine was a perk as well. My party had two combo platters, one veg and one meat, which came together on a ginormous injera and with plenty of refill injera rolls as we moaned a pleasurable path through the platter. We split a bottle of honey wine. I think we spent about $38/head? Good Date night spot. So grateful for the amazing ethnic and culinary richness of our East Bay!

The food was so good that I told the waiter I want to marry into an Ethiopian family just so I could eat like this every day

Ordered food through their direct site. The food was given to someone else. When I tried to explain that I had a pickup the woman behind the counter got very defensive and kept saying it wasn't her fault that the food was given to someone else. I wasn't blaming her at all. I just wanted my food. She told me to call the food company. Eventhough it was her restaurant the order went through. And refused to help further. I like their food but won't be returning bc of the bad customer service. Calling my credit card company to get a refund.

Mediocre Ethiopian food. I felt like something was definitely missing and the serving size definitely didn’t match the price. Posting 2 stars because something sharp got stuck in my throat when I ate there last night! I still can’t get it out this morning no matter how much water I’ve been drinking ..it feels like a piece of plastic or foil and it’s really frustrating because it makes me think what the hell was in that food??? There are far better Ethiopian restaurants in Oakland.

Barcote will always have a special place in my heart. It was a neighborhood go to for my wife and I when we lived nearby. The consideration and hospitality were always excellent as was the barcote (spicy) sauce. Excellent renditions of all the Ethiopian vegetarian classics. No matter where I happen to be in the world, sometimes I wish I could just go grab some food from Barcote.

Barcote is one of my favourite restaurants in the Bay Area, and my absolute favourite to take company to if they aren't local. The portions are perfect, 2 veggie platters are enough to feed 4 hungry people, satisfy all of those in my friend groups that aren't meat eaters, and are astoundingly delicious. Everyone there is incredibly friendly, and the back patio is a great atmosphere to eat and chat. Every guest I've ever brought there has been completely satisfied!
