Preis/Leistung: Für 5€ pro Person absolut in Ordnung.

Imponent deactivated military compound with an overview from milles. A nice panorama to enjoy and learn its history.

Built, as it should be, on the top of a mountain, this citadel is an excellent example of military construction. Parking and bus stop is nearby. There are a couple of museums in the fortress, which, of course, I recommend visiting. There are also a couple of cafes to relax. Well, what especially surprised us and turned out to be very pleasant was the presence of a small zoo on the territory of the fortress. Here you can see tigers and lions and some other animals. And here there is a great opportunity to look from the fortress wall at the nearby surroundings. If you are in the city, be sure to visit this fortress.

Was super impressed by this place--wasn't at all expecting the zoo and the many mini museums. I came in the last hour, so tickets were only 6€. Didn't have time to really check out the exhibits, but loved walking around the old fort. The animals were also too cool--saw many species I hadn't see before. Would highly recommend for people of all ages!

It's a zoo and a historical site with several separate exhibitions all in one. Very much worth your while. They have a audio tour which you can use on our phone (with free WiFi) which I found of added value. It's in several languages (regrettably the Dutch didn't work). It is a stif climb to the entrance so I wouldn't go there with a wheelchair.

Really well preserved castle. There is a zoo inside that makes it more attractive to families with young children. The view is amazing

Always a nice place to visit. We only walked around this time, didn't go in, but growing up in this area, I've been to Besançon's citadel many times and the museums and the park inside the fortress are worth a visit!

Arrived at 15h, so we decided not to buy tickets for entry to the citadel and museums. Still alloes you to enjoy the very nice views over the city.

A great place to stop for a walk and museum areas around the fort if it interests you. It was free on the Sunday we visited.

Besançon Citadel, nestled in the charming city of Besançon, France, is an architectural masterpiece that effortlessly blends history, culture, and natural beauty. As an avid traveler, I had the pleasure of visiting this incredible fortress recently, and I am still in awe of its grandeur and historical significance. One cannot help but be captivated by the sheer magnificence of Besançon Citadel as they approach it. Situated atop a hill overlooking the Doubs River, the panoramic views alone are worth the visit. The fortress stands proudly as a testament to the city's rich heritage, dating back to its origins in the 17th century. The imposing walls, bastions, and towers create an awe-inspiring silhouette against the sky, leaving visitors with a sense of wonder and curiosity.

Absolutely beautiful view ✨ I paid €7.40 for two hours before closing. It was breathtaking. The animals are alright… but the view from the top makes the whole trip worth it! Also, the museums are interesting. I recommend!

Spectacular views on the surrounding landscape and interesting expositions (museums & animal park)

A great visit to the Citadel. Pay for the entry to get the best views of the town and river below from the ramparts. The small animal zoo is also part of the entry as are 3 museums dedicated to local culture and the resistance during WW2.

A really amazing place with many live animals and preserved ones. They had fish, insects, mammals, etc.. Not something I knew coming into it but it was quite impressive and I would like to go back.

You get to see the whole city from the top with beautiful views and you will see few animals on the way before you reach the top

It really is a very nice place to visit with children. I think some of the workers could be more open to explain details about the animals or the history of the place. But if you go with no further expectations than seeing insects, some animals and have an amazing view, you won't be disappointed whatsoever

Was really nice! Big, open and interesting. Lots of animals and creatures and things to do. The Aquarium and insectarium are great! I actually left my phone on a bench and only realised 40 mins later. A member of staff had found it and taken it to the reception where I could pick it up so was very happy about that!

If you visit Besançon then you must visit the citadel. Vauban built, it is well preserved and actively maintained. Lots of stuff to see and do and there are gelada monkeys.

Quite expensive entry but can spend quite a long time inside. Great views of surrounding areas

Impressive citadel and fortress above besancon It’s worth paying the 10.90E entry fee to walk on the walls of the citadel and visit the ecological exhibitions and zoo within the walls. Unfortunately the resistance museum is closed until 2023, but a good reason to return

Nice and what a surprise, you can see there monkeys, bugs and fish. Some nice museums. Nice view from citadel to city.
