An explosion of colors, smells and geometries! Taste the dragon fruit -you can buy and have it ready to eat. Definitely recommended but mind the prices…it’s relatively costly if you don’t pay attention.

A fair selection of souvenirs, some of it kitsch, but some great spices and vanilla and regular well-made ravannes (frame drums) with optional carry case.

We visited the market as part of a guided tour with the "taste buddies" very inspiring, if you are looking for fresh food. Never tasted such tasty pineapples. The sugar cane juice was very sweet but great. Maybe with some rum, a great longdrink :-) but not at noon and not at 30 degrees and 150% humidity. Try the ayurveda tea shop next to the sugar cane juice guy and have a chat with him.

Good place to experience local food, people, souvenirs etc. Mainly the market is touristic with most price is not for local at least. The food is great and so many variety mauritian, chinese, indian food available inside the food court. There is no sitting arrangements to eat in. The alouda was great as well as the tamarind juice + dhal puri and panni puri yum yum delicious 😋 The 4stars is for its authenticity and natural ways. Else a bit of cleaning and sitting area on food court could be a good thing! There section for vegetables was the only reason I gave it 3 stars. but once you enter there is tourist souvenir section and the low key harassment begins. It can get really uncomfortable because we didn’t go for that but rather to just look around and have an “authentic” Mauritian experience but I guess not. Personally it was ok for a day trip but I wouldn’t go out of my way to see it. Not worth it in my opinion unless you want to buy cheap souvenirs at massively inflated prices.

It is a very fun place to see, lots of fresh vegetables to buy, the prices are on paper black and white, for a tourist that's a great help! A lot of people might not know there's upstairs too, there's more tourist souvenirs to look at too, plus the view is better upstairs if you wish to take any photos. Try the alouda drink too! It's like a vanilla milkshake but with Mauritian twists.

Ohhh...I visited Valentina Shopping Mall. It was really very impressive indeed ... Spacious, clean, all amenities are readily available... One- stop Mall : no need to go elsewhere to complete your needs ! Eco- friendly , attractive food courts , fresh flowers ... But my main aim was Lolo Hypermarket seeking Tuna for my cats: fortunately ,got them at cheapest price there . A bit high on the shelf ,at the very back, but I asked someone who was very gentle to help me .Thank you,Mr. ! I was very happy to spot this new most agreeable place ! Definitely IT should be visited !

Hi we arrived about 6 am to avoid Port Louis traffic so everything wasn’t open. It appears to be a very good fruit and veg market at that time of day. Perhaps other parts open up later but we were expecting meat products as well so a little disappointing. The market is old and was enjoyable to walk round. The vendors are very friendly and helpful, remember to take smaller money than a 500 rupee note I forgot and it was changed but it may have messed up her cash float for the day. When we left to drive back to Balaclava we were very happy we had chosen to arrive early as the traffic heading in had built up. This was a Monday and had I been stuck in traffic on the way in trying to find a park I would have really really been disappointed.

Zu viele Menschen. Immer handeln vor dem kaufen. Beim bezahlen aufpassen, dass der richtige Betrag eingegeben wird. Nichts rohes essen, Getränke nur aus original Verpackung

Buildings are old and streets are dirty. Looks like people here don’t care about their surroundings at all whatsoever. Probably India must look like this. Otherwise people are extremely friendly and no crime at all. So it’s a mix of good and less good.

Might be a tourist trap if you don’t know prices. Good for some small souvenirs but don’t forget to bargain. Usually, first price is almost double. Also, the smell and the dirt might drive you away fast.

Bustling market in the heart of Port Louis, set in historic building, with many traders offering a variety of quality and fresh vegetables. There is also a craft and clothing market upstairs, and a street food section. Well worth a visit to experience life as a local.

Its a very unique experience to shop in this area, you will encounter dozens of merchants trying to sell you various items. Negotiating is a must, you can reduce original price even by 50-60%

Beautiful place to visit. However they should keep it cleaner. The food court is an eyesore !! Flies, roaches or God knows even rats ! The prices are very expensive if tourists don’t know. Better visit with a Mauritian or genuine guide. Overall, it is a must visit place if you’re coming to mauritius!

I really don’t know why people having trouble here very easy to barter. Here you MUST. They WILL Give you some crazy price or even have a price tag….disregard all that. Whatever they say cut it at least in half. Unless you just that dumb to pay the asking price. Hahaha ball cap 250r, magic box (small) 300r, incense (sandalwood) a case 300r vanilla bean grade A 8 sticks 300r, misc small trinkets less than 2USD. take your time look around get a feel for it. But NEVER pay the asking price. These guys are pros. Set your price walk away they will come after you with a counter offer. STAND your ground. If they want they will sell it to you. I personally spend less than $50 on a whole bunch of things. It’s a big tourist trap place but they have a lot of things to get as a memory of this beautiful island nation.

Most stalls sell the same curios that are clearly mass produced. The vendors are quite pushy and expect you to bargain. Be careful of engaging. The fruit and veggie section is a feast of smells and colours and feels more authentic.

Busy and bustling, Downstairs is fruit & veg. Upstairs are tourist 'gift' stalls. I must look like a chap who needs T-shirts. And vanilla. Great fun though!

The central market of Port Louis consists of a fresh produce area, a general market with a meat and fish market close by. The fresh produce area is well worht a vist especially if you want to stock up for cooking. The general market has slightly pushy sellers and does not really offer much quality in the line of clothing and souvenirs. The meat and fish market should be avoided if you do not have a keen interest in raw meat.

The golden treasure of Port louis, rich in culture, diversity, colourful place, lively place with an ambiance to shop for daily basic food supplies, mainly fresh vegetables, and colourful fruits, ranging from sizes, colours and merchants present, friendliest people to guide you!! Alouda Pillay as a cold sweet beverage along with Dholl Puri and Roti are the most popular snacks. Check out Pani Puri as well, spicy sauce available to water your mouth, a cold lemon juice to refresh you from the heat of the Capital City. Overall, it's very rich in culture, languages and its legacy will go from generations to generations !! Go visit as soon as possible

Mostly fresh fruit and veg. I love the vanilla aluda. Good spot to get the vanilla bean/pod but don't be a tourist fool & get overcharged. Vanilla is not a rare commodity in Mauritius, negotiate a better price. Upstairs has some beautiful Mauritian gifts but their prices are ridiculously high for a market, if the converted price is not worth it either take a local with you or go to the mall where the prices are standard.

Very busy location, attracting locals for the various food stalls and spice stalls. Then there is the tourist trinket stalls that attracts the tourists. Worth a visit for the experience and the continual selling pull from the traders and the bartering. Don't believe it is genuine Mauritian made goods especially the regularity of Christian Dior goods, think about where these fakes are made and the labour and the environments they are made in.

Prices are over the top. Spices that costed 1700 rs we bought them for 300. If you go to a supermarket a big bag of spices is 10rs. I understand they need to make a profit, but also offer honest and fair prices

The central market is a place rich with cultural history, plenty of movement around this area with products ranging from the sweetest fruit to the saltiest fish you can find ANYTHING truely Mauritian that your tummy desires. Go enjoy some true local delicacies at the Central Market! In this picture is a pair of "ti puri" which is deepfried flour pancakes with a whip of some indian curries, VEGAN-FRIENDLY AND SAVOURY (please tell the merchants "no chilli" or "Pa met pima" if you dont want to be blasted with that tangy hotness in this 30⁰C weather) Alongside are 2 Samossas stuffed with masala potatoes which are also deepfried. All of this for only Rs23.00! (~€0.70)

We only had about 40 minutes on an organised trip but this place is worth a visit. The top floor is very touristy and I'd avoid it. But the ground floor, with all the fruit & vegetables, is wonderful to walk around. I'd like to have had the time to explore some of the nearby streets.

  • 4/5 Iulian S. 2 years ago on Google
Very busy place. Some local food and vegetables, but mostly knock-offs made in china. It should feel like the Istanbul bazaar, but they are not quite there yet. And for good reason Port Louis is 250K people, Istanbul is 20milion or so. Actually, the entire island is 1.2 millions. Still worth visiting, you can get cinnamon, curry and other fresh spices.

  • 2/5 Niklas B. 2 years ago on Google
The market is overrated in my opinion. Merchants are very obtrusive and you can't just look at their stores without being annoyed by them. Fruits, vegetables and spices are good to buy here but most stores with "handcrafted art" have pretty much the same goods to offer. Mostly touristic stuff like magnets and small dodo figures. Also, the prices you are offered as a tourist are way too high, so you have to negotiate a lot and in the end you will still pay a normal to expensive price.

  • 4/5 Brandon A. 2 years ago on Google
As markets go around the world... Cheap knock off t-shirts and clothes. And like usual you will have to bargain them down. The fresh produce is really great.. So if ur staying at a self catering get some fresh produce and across the road is fresh fish market. It gets quite busy so there will be the opportunists like pick pockets so carry light and safe guard ur bags. It is a rather safe environment otherwise. Enjoy.. It's a must see

  • 4/5 Anthony R. 2 years ago on Google
Colourful and busy market in port Louis. You can pretty much buy anything here .

  • 4/5 Ravel 2 years ago on Google
Plus: A lot of choices and different options. All friendly people. Minus: Since one did not have a chance to look closer to what is being offered due to too pushy salespeople then and when, the walk-out was as fast as the walk-in. If one doesn't let people check the offer, most likely, they'll leave again.

  • 2/5 Marshall J. 2 years ago on Google
The pushy vendors might not be so annoying if they weren't selling the same poorly made, overpriced garbage. Stick to the fruits and vegetables downstairs — upstairs is trash.

  • 3/5 Samantha P. 1 year ago on Google
It's definitely something to experience when you visit Mauritius. The market has everything from clothes, spices, fruits, veggies and traditional Mauritian dishes to choose from. Don't expect the market to be super clean. Unfortunately it is just a market which can be quite smelly due to all the meat and fish. It's also quite busy and the people could be overwhelming as they are quite eager to sell. Take cash as there are no card facilities. Enjoy your stroll through the market and end off your trip with a lovely meal at the waterfront.

  • 5/5 Cissie C. 1 year ago on Google
It's the best place for buying tourist souvenirs, remember to bargain the price with locals, you can try cut the labelled the price to start with then gradually increase, but please don't be so harsh as they also need to make some profits plus the currency is already low compare to developed countries. Try the dholl Puri by the front entrance on the left hand side, it's 25 each, then try the alouda in the food place (3rd one down as you walk in on the left ) too, it's like a vanilla milkshake with Mauritian twists, price was 30 rupees at the time of posting, when you finish with glass please give it back to the seller
