It's the fort of Mauritius. It was built for protection from outside enemies. But fortunately no war was fraught. Later it was treated as jail of Mauritius. The place have some very nice views of city and harbor. Vary nicely maintained. Must visit place.

Great view of city from there. This 19th-century military fortress features a walled courtyard & panoramic city views. Perched on top of the hill Petite Montague, the Citadel Fort is located at a height of 100 metres. Also known as the Adelaide Fort (named after the wife of William II, when the British held land in Port Louis), the fort offers stunning views of the harbour and the entire city of Port Louis. Constructed in the 19th century by Colonel Cunningham to protect the British Army from the enemy, the Citadel Fort has been constructed in a Moorish style, complete with horse shoe arches. The fort has been constructed using large rectangular blocks. In present times the fort has been converted into a National monument. Surrounding the fort are also the Caudan Water Front and the vast Indian Ocean. Fort Citadel remains a popular tourist destination owing to the stunning views it provides.

The Citadel of Port Louis is better known as Fort Adelaide. It is a fortification that was built from 1834 to 1840 on a hill facing the harbor. The ease with which the British captured the island of Mauritius in 1810 led the invaders to strengthen the island's defenses. The British rapidly built several forts, including Fort George, Fort Adelaide, Fort William and Fort Victoria. Only Fort Adelaide remains today. The Fort was originally built as a means to fortify the defense of Port Louis but was never used for that reason. It is now known as a famous spot for impressive views of the Capital. The Fort itself is an impressive sight. With the wall made of huge cut stones of basalt rocks, the Fort still holds some remnants from the past such as cannons. However, it’s now famous for the 360-degree view of the Capital offering a breathtaking view of the Capital from all the angles! Such as the China Town, Champ de Mars, and mountains all at one place.

While not particularly impressive, this spot offers a great vantage point for capturing picturesque images of Port Louis. It's an old fort with historical significance, once used to defend against enemies and later as a prison for slaves. The view from the top at all four corners is lovely, and you won't need more than 30 minutes to explore this site.

The Fort Adelaide, built by the British between 1834 and 1840. The Fort was built to protect the Port Louis city. However fort was never used to ward off any attack or to repress any threat of revolt by French inhabitants. Now, it stands as a scenic spot for tourists to have an impressive paranomic view of the city. 24 cannons were mounted on bunkers along the façade overlooking the city and 4 on each of the other sides. From the top of the fort, you'll have a good view of the race court, the harbour, the city and sourround mountains. Lovely tourist site

It’s perfecto for beautiful views overlooking the Mauritian capital city Port Louis. I enjoyed walking up the stairs and exploring the fort. It is a quick visit for those looking to know more about the history of the British and their slavery regime practiced here at the fort. Other than that there isn’t much to do here.

This is a very nice place with a 360° view of whole Mauritius from a single point. It has towns on one side and commercial area on the other side. The scenic beauty of this place is unmatchable. Wind blows at very high speeds at the top of Citadel.

The Citadel is an erstwhile fort located at one of the highest points in Port Louis and offers free entry for visitors. Due to its vantage point, it offers a panoramic view of the harbour and the central business district of Port Louis. It also houses some cannons from when it was originally built and a souvenir shop. But that's about all it offers. I would have liked more detailed information about the use of the fort and a view of the barracks from within to understand the how the soldiers lived there and how their lives were.

Definitely worth a visit, it’s free to enter and there are some nice views of the city. The views of the mountain are a bit obstructed. There is plenty of parking, but I would suggest approaching from the Champs de Mars side. The road is wider

From the Citadelle, you get the best view of Port Louis 👌. This is an old fortress at the top of a hill. From this Fort, you look down at the entire region from the hills to the west to the dockyard to the east. You also can see the third oldest horse track in the world from here. At the very top of the Fort, you have an outdoor gym with a few pieces of equipment for those who use the hills as get fit routines. The Citadelle was closed and I don't think its possible to see inside it.

(Translated by Google) The Adelaide Fort, built by the British in 1835, is one of the historical buildings that survive the colonial period of Mauritius. The British built the Adelaide fort for stationing troops to defend against invasion from the sea. Overlooking Port Louis from the Adelaide Fort, you can see most of the buildings in the city. This building is made of rough but huge rectangular blocks that have changed color to gray-black over time.

We came here as part of a package tour. The place has history attached to it. For tourists it provides a cool view of the city from up top. I would not have visited here standalone. Nothing much to see or do. A small fort with few canons and views. The spiral staircase was cool though!!!

Personally i think this is a must visit if you're in Port Louis. The view is spectacular as you get a good look around this part of Port Louis and the entrance is still free unlike other places. During the day it was beautiful and at night you get a different quiet and peaceful feeling of Port Louis.

Worth the visit! Free entrance and amazing views of Port Louis from two sides. The old colonial city is on one side, with its grand buildings and narrow streets. The modern city is on the other side, with its skyscrapers and shopping malls. Bonus points for the art gallery, which is beautifully embedded in the Citadelle chambers, and is currently showcasing artists from Mauritius and other nearby territories.

It’s a place for people interested in history and old military fortifications. The Citadel in Port Luis was the largest military fort on Mauritius Island. A.D 1840. It dominates over the city and harbour. Altitude 224 ft a.s.l. Housed 200 soldiers and gunners. An interesting fact is that Fort Adélaide had never been used to ward off any attack. The Fort Adélaide was perfectly equipped. Stored 3 month’s stock of food, 40 000 gallons of drinking water and 280 barrels of gunpowder. It's really a lot. Currently, still in perfect condition. Nice panoramic view on Port Louis. A place worth to visit. I visited in May 2016. No hassle with car park. Gift shop. Toilets available.

This is a well-preserved fort with excellent views over the town on all directions. It has a souvenir shop inside. It is free to access, though probably only interesting for maybe half an hour. It appears easy enough to park outside. There weren't any displays about its history. You can walk around the top of all the walls.

Nice old fort in Port Louis. Free Parking available at the location. Wonderful views of the capital city and the north. You get a idea of how it was to be in an 18th century fort although it was not really used for any active defense work, as per the history slab at the door.

The Citadel is a good place to visit for some history and great views. There is an elevated platform along the walls which give you a look around all sides of Port Louis and neighbouring areas. There are several cannons dotted around the structure. Downside is there aren't that many plaques or info boards to tell you about the place.
