It already attracts you with its majesty. When we look at it in terms of history, it is a great thing that such a beautiful tree remains standing in a place that has been the scene of many events.

Let me tell you that it looks like an ordinary tree. You can pass by. But if you look carefully, its body is impressive. Honestly, I thought about the moment when the tree was planted 720 years ago when I stood in front of it.

If you knew what this tree has seen and experienced? His estimated age is 702 years old. It is estimated that the tree was planted in 1298, when the construction of the cathedral began. Its trunk divides into 7 branches after 2.70 meters. It is the oldest and living tree known to live in Cyprus. It is said to bear fruit seven times a year.

It is a monumental tree that witnessed historical events. You may pass by it without paying attention while walking, but it definitely deserves respect with its age (it is approximately 720 years old).

It amazes me the date, how old things are here and the tree is unreal, including the outbuilding.

In the past, the Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque was called St. Nicholas Cathedral. This is one of the most striking examples of medieval architecture in Northern Cyprus. It was built on the model of the Reims Cathedral in France and, like it, was used only for the most solemn occasions: coronation and wedding. Accordingly, the architectural appearance of the cathedral is maintained in the best royal traditions. The Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque bears the name of the leader of the Ottoman Empire, the commander of the detachment under whose leadership Famagusta was taken. However, the historical name of St. Nicholas Cathedral is recognizable to this day. Pay attention to the stained glass windows. And also an old and ancient tree near the entrance, which has seen many stories and different destinies.

(Translated by Google) It was planted in the courtyard during the construction of Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque (Previously St. Nicholas Cathedral) in 1299, and with its 722 years of age, the oldest living tree on the island of Cyprus... The tree has various names – these are Ficus sycomorus in Latin, Pharaoh's fig, or mulberry fig as its leaves resemble those of the mulberry tree, or Cümbez as Turkish Cypriots call it. Cumbez is a berry that belongs to the south of the Sahel and the north of the Tropic of Capricorn in Africa, and this tropical fig has been cultivated since ancient times. The main trunk of the tree was surrounded by smaller roots and joined by supporting the larger trunk, and other branches emerged from the giant roots. According to local folklore, the main trunk of the tree consists of seven branches, each representing the past hundred years. In the Bible, the holy book of Christians, this tree is mentioned seven times in the Old Testament and once in the New Testament. Botanists call this monumental tree deciduous for short. Because the tree sheds all its leaves in winter and becomes dead, but a month later it wraps its giant trunk with all its green leaves and acts as a shade for those who come in hot weather in the courtyard of the historical building, which has been converted from a cathedral to a mosque. The sycamore tree is the oldest living creature in Cyprus. This monumental tree has witnessed the armor of Lusignan knights making noise in the courtyard, Venetian builders, the Ottoman conquest of the island, earthquakes and the Peace Operation in 1974. Only the tree knows what else it has witnessed. Hugging a tree is free... It is registered to the National Heritage List of the Cultural Office and is protected by the Famagusta Forestry Department. I recommend embracing this monumental tree. Hugging trees not only raises the oxytocin hormone in the body, but also makes us calmer, more emotionally connected, and generally happier. The tree is also known to attract the negative energy in our body and turn it into positive energy. With the abundance of Cümbez, you can be sure that the rest of your holiday will be even more comfortable... Enjoyable trips... Keyifli geziler...

It used to be a cathedral, today it functions as a mosque. Ladies are not allowed to enter in shorts and without a head covering, but at the entrance you can choose from a few skirts and shawls. All visitors must leave their shoes at the door.

👍 Old ghost town shows an abandoned part of town after the Turkish bombing of the area. A lot of old buildings and ruined houses are cordoned off by barbed wire and barricade fences. Lot of tours are organized and you can take a ride though the area by guided buses. Be careful not to wander in any of...

👍👍 What an amazing place. Time stopped in 1974. There are wrecked buildings and large holes in others. Most buildings are in tact. Although you cannot go in the buildings there are still signs visible. One building advertises Color Film processing and that they take old style Diners Club credit cards....
