Québec City is a pedestrian city par excellence. The main places to visit in Old Québec are less than a 20-minute walk from each other and safety is another of its characteristics, which can be felt both during the day and at night. At the top of Cap Diamant is the Citadel (La Citadelle), a historic fortress that is now a stronghold of the Canadian Armed Forces. The descent to the lower town is no less charming, between uneven cobblestone streets, with picturesque houses and stores. All in all, Quebec has a unique and striking style, which is preserved to the delight of visitors.

How I wish I could give them more than 5 stars. The place was immaculately clean and the staff were fantastic. It is actually a military place where the actual Canadian military reside. You can do a self guided tour of the place for no cost - you cannot enter the majority of the buildings though. However you can see the change of guard which takes place everyday at 9am, 11am, 1pm, 3 and 5pm. This is something you should not miss. Parking is free and it's very well organized. The staff is great and really helpful- they speak English too. For the guided tour it cost 40 dollars a family of four - individuals are I think 18 dollars. A guide takes you inside the Governor Generals house for 1 hour.Pictures can be taken inside here - other buildings don't allow. The tour is really interesting and informative- our guide Ffion was awesome. This place is located downtown old Quebec city and there are loads of things to do. Nearby is Plains of Abraham, Joan of Arc garden, cobblestone roads, bus tour and I believe the oldest hotel there - Frontenac

Very cool historical place that is still the actual military base. We saw musical performances at 10am and had a guided tour on English. At noon, the military fires blank shots from a cannon. They have very nice museum with lots of artifacts from WWI. Also, changing guards is very interesting as well. You will not find anywhere in the world French speaking soldiers in British uniforms, and do not forget the goat.

A must go if you are in Quebec city. There is a lot of history here. The entrance is hard to find but once you make it in you're transported back in time. The guards and bare skin hats are on century and you can see them fire off a cannon everyday at noon. The museum where you buy tickets gives you a nice background on the citadel but the tour led by wonderful staff is definitely the highlight. Our tour guide was informative and very funny. Make sure you get free tickets to tour the governor general's quarters after your main tour. It is definitely worth going to see. We were lucky enough to only be in a group of three people.

My fourth time here and it never gets old despite how old it is. If only the walls could talk about the many stories that have gone on here over the last 200 plus years. This fortress is an amazing design of form and function. Protection from all sides and homes to both the Governor General and Commanding Officer. This is a great place to take in history and to remember those who fought for Canadian freedoms and rights. There are self guided tours at the moment with staff at flag posts to talk about the various aspects of the fortress. The base is still a working one so be mindful of them around. If you are lucky you can watch the changing of the guard at the front although before Covid there were 10 changes that were more granduer in the centre of the fortress. There is a gift shop and there are also washroom if you need them.

This is one place you should definitely not miss when you're visiting Quebec City. We love history and La Citadelle de Quebec is a full of historical events between France, England, Canada and US. You cannot walk around the citadel without a guide since the fort is still an active military base. Thank you to our tour guide Marcus for the excellent walking tour of the citadel. He was informative and funny. The Royal 22eme Regiment Museum is also worth a visit with their amazing display of collection of the regiment's and the Canadian history, especially through the two world wars and the Korean war. We really enjoyed it very much.

Informative tour offered in English and French. We took the tour of the military side, but they do offer a tour covering the government side as well. The docent was well informed and shared a great deal of history with us. A good walking tour of about an hour. After the tour, you can visit the museum and then walk around the outer walls for fabulous views of the river and city.

Had a very good, hour-long tour today, guided by Dominique, in English. He led me around some of the museum exhibits, then out onto the grounds, describing the buildings and relating stories about the 22nd Regiment’s service and members. Saw inside the prison and the chapel and had a wonderful lookout over the old city and river.

Among all the things we did in Quebec, this wasn't talked about as much and we loved it the most! Make sure you go right before noon to have a special cannon experience ;) they have guided tours every few hours in French and English. Great viewpoint and a place to learn and know Quebec's history.

An impressive site with rich history. Unfortunately the only way to view the Citadelle is through a paid tour (because this is an active military site), which is informative but feels quite rushed. There is a small museum area that can be viewed as part of admission.

Great tours and super friendly staff. I did the Citadel tour and the additional tour of the Governor General's residence. They were both great tours. I was really fortunate to be the only one on the residence tour, so I was able to talk and ask a lot of questions of my fantastic guide, Katya. I was there on Canada Day and there was a parade that started at the Citadel with the regiment's band and marched to the Dufferin boardwalk. There was also a 21 cannon salute during the time I was there. They also have a very nice museum that shouldn't be missed.

It's a nice place for the views. You have to sign up for the tour if you want to go inside as it is an active military base. The tour is one hour long and is engaging on the history of citadel, the regiment and its current usage.

Super friendly and enthusiastic staff! It was a pleasure to listen the guided tour. And the views from the Citadel are magnificent. Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t very supportive, so we spent more time inside the museum. Will be especially interesting for those who like history and military.

WARNING: NO changing of the guard due to Covid-19. No need to rush to be there at 10 am. Otherwise, great experience.

Massive place we reached on a very warm September day as we came all the way from the Dufferin terrace, which was at the back of the Citadel (good to know if you want to go straight to the entrance of this place). The Citadel is packed with history and it reminds me of so many fortified European cities all the way from the Atlantic ocean to the eastern part of the Med. Lots of info around and inside the place, entrance of around 15 CAD (if I remember correctly), souvenir shop, toilets etc

We had a great experience and really enjoyed the tour. The price for admission was very reasonable. The tour was about an hour long and learned a lot about the Citadelle. You also can’t beat the views of the city when visiting. We also enjoyed watching the changing of the guards. Would definitely recommend a visit here when visiting.

The demerit point about the old Québec is that it is always very crowded. Otherwise it is very pleasant and beautiful. I won't recommend going by car, it is too difficult to find parking. If you are going from Montreal, just take a bus tour so you can really enjoy it and don't worry about anything else.

You can get some great views of Quebec City and the rivers from the walls here. Beautiful and usually pretty quiet. Worth the walk around it.

Place very rich in history. It is mostly focused on the 22nd Regiment of the Canadian Armed Forces but they have lots of exhibits about the history of the Citadel. The guided tour is very informative. Plus a great view of the city.

Visited the Citadelle today it is a fun experience with full of historical knowledge. Ticket is $18 CAD adults. It is a guided tour for an hour. The interesting fact about Citadelle is that this is still a active military base. Worth the tour.

An active military base with historic buildings. Since it is an active base, there are uniformed personnel. Has an ongoing construction at the entrance, watch out for the signs, it is confusing. Has an entrance fee. Has a guided tour in english. Does have an artillery fire at the end. Has a museum for Canada military history and contributions. Not really amazed except from the view it provides giving a clear view of the lake and its surroundings. Accepts credit and debit. Has a parking space, cafeteria and souvenir shop

An impressive location with a long and interesting history! We took the guided tour with Sarah, who was knowledgeable and well-spoken. Loved the chance to see the structure and learn about how a citadel works. At the end, we got to see the year's first marching band performance, which was impressive and entertaining. Definitely worth a visit!

There’s a museum if you’re interested, a bit small but well cared for, with a very interesting room in which earned medals are displayed. Additionally, we took a (paid) tour through the Citadelle itself, which was very informative and interesting, and it was only 1 hour long. You cannot enter individual buildings in the citadel since it’s in active military use. If you’re interested in history, I’d say it’s a pretty good use of your time.

This historic citadel is still an active military base of the Canadian army. I recommend you book the guided tour in advance before visiting the place. Our tour guide was kind and knowledgeable. Knowing the history of the fortress and how strategically designed the citadel was interesting a lot. There's also a small museum that tells the full history of the fortress next to the ticketing office. The view of Quebec was also amazing!

Neatly maintained and ample parking available. The guided tour was very informative and would recommend it to anyone who is interested in a bit of history. The tour takes about an hour. There is a two hour parking limit so people can take a walk around the areas of the Citadel post guided tour.

Really cool old fort right in the main tourism hub. You have to pay for the guide because it’s an active military base. Our guilds in English was great! Just about 1 hour in length, if that. Be warned, it’s almost entirely outdoors… if you’re going in winter, dress for it!

Very interesting museum and still an active military establishment. The views are incredible. Plan ample amounts of time to visit the museum and go all the way to the end to see the medal room. Very impressive. The tour is pretty fast and the stops in the little sub-museum spaces were a little too fast to get the opportunity to read the signs. It's located at the top of a rather steep hill. There were steps so I wouldn't recommend going with wheels (although the museum does have ramps) . Toilets are at the back of the museum. The little gift shop has Interesting toys and souvenirs.

Very cool fortification walls and gates that are accessible throughout the city, with constant repairs and block replacement to slow deterioration. I love that we can walk up to and on top of the walls and plateaus, and the views of the river and city below are beautiful.

Highly recommended attraction in Quebec City. Loved the tour. We did both the Citadel tour and the Governor’s quarter tour. Beautifully kept site and well trained staff with great story telling. At the end of the Governor’s quarter tour (free), we got to go to the terrace to take in the view. Breath taking and educational at the same time. I will remember!

Gorgeous view. The heaviness of history comes upfront with the walls and canons. The blue sky feels so close while the walls are so high. The green lawns are well maintained. What a great place to go.

Very historical military fort in Old Quebec City. I highly recommend the hour long guided tour.

The view was amazing from there. We took the English tour. Our guide was very informative and cracked a couple of jokes. ( told us that if we liked the tour then her name is Coco, but if not, her name is George 🤣. So her name is Coco. ) This place still has active soldiers on site, thus we couldn't go into alot of places and just walked by them. When you buy your tour tickets, it also gives you access to the museum at the end. We spent about over an hour in the museum cause it was quite interesting.

The good experience most is from the good guide we ran into. She is very good at what she is doing.

As compared to the experience at the Citadel at Halifax, this one is boring! The 1-hr guided tour is full of dialogues, nothing spectacular except the visit to a tiny military prison with a few cells. The museum is more worth visiting. Just my two cents, no offense.

Nice place to visit in Quebec, Ticket is little higher I would prefer to visit nearby park where you can see the great view.

Nice little tour around the exterior of military base. You get to see the old prison. Tours are offered in French and English. Takes about an hour. The scenery is gorgeous! Changing of the guard every 2 hours. That was the highlight of this place for me.

  • 5/5 Samantha L. 2 years ago on Google
Definitely worth getting the guided tour to learn more about the Citadel. The museum is pretty great, gives an in depth history of the 22nd regiment. There is a nice store as well.
