If you will travel to Utrecht, I recommend to visit the castle in Amerongen. Amerongen Castle is one of the beautiful residences in Holland.Visitors may admire the art collection and gorgeous gardens of Castle Amerongen. The castle can only be visited by means of a guided tour.Tours are in Dutch, you get an English translation for every room. But the translation in English gives very little information, it is better to make excursions in English for foreign tourists.

We visited the castle and did a guided tour which centered around the current exposition about the Disaster Year (Rampjaar) 1672. The guides are volunteers with a lot of knowledge and the setup of the different rooms in the castle is excellent to get a good overview without going into too much detail. The area around the castle is beautiful and perfect for a hike or picnic. Reservations for the tour are required, especially in the weekend as it can be busy.

The castle is lovingly and expertly restored in 2020. It preserved most of the paintings, furniture carpets and tapestries as well as books and many other items for the last 400 years. Each room is really impressive by having breathe taking history. On the weekend you can visit the castle without the guide. On the other days only guided tours are available so better book tickets in advance. But, there are really expert guides in every room that knows amazing stories about history of the custle and people who lived there. I'd like to thank all guides for their excellent work. Do not be shy and ask them. They know many languages and interesting stories to share. The park is not big, but lovely landscaped. There are flowers that blossom for the most of the year. Reserve 3-4 hours for the visit to enjoy the castle and the park. The car parking is opposite the main gate and free. One more thing to keep in mind, is that you can only have tea, coffee and soft drinks with some pastries in the Orangery caffe. To have something more substantial to eat, you should go to the town. There are 2-3 places within 5-7 min walk. Highly recommend to visit.

Absolutely fantastic castle/land house with an astonishing amount of detail, stories and curiosities to discover. The volunteers telling stories in each room are absolutely wonderful and really help with the immersion into the history of the castle. Would highly recommend going.

Kasteel Amerongen was the residence of Count Bentinck in 1918. He welcomed the German Kaiser Wilhelm II who went in exile after World War 1 for a few days - he stayed for one and a half years! And gave a statue of himself as goodbye present when he moved to House Doorn. All of this is told in a great tour of some 75 minutes by very knowledgeable volunteer guides (cost 12 euros). Highly recommended. Ample free parking available just outside the castle walls. And the stables are now a posh restaurant called Bentinck.

Purposely expressionless castle from the outside as it is supposed to in the Dutch classical tradition. This makes this place a teleportation back to the 17th and 18th century republic. The inside stands in stark contrast to the outside, with nicely decorated rooms, many paintings and artworks. The guide was friendly and knowledgeable. This place has some cool history the guides can teach you, on the disaster year for example, or the prolonged stay of Kaiser Wilhelm. I can definitely recommend a visit to this place to take in some Dutch culture, with some English touches.

I love this castle and everything about it. I have been three or four times now. Last time during Christmas and the decorations were really beautiful! Nice garden, gorgeous interiors, enthousiast volunteers, nice café and shop as well. And the village of Amerongen is wonderful as well for a little weekend walk

Kaunis ja rauhallinen paikka. Opas kertoi hyvin paikan historiasta. En suosittele ihan perheen pienimmille

We went on a Saturday with kids 3,5,10 and 13 years old. The kids had different puzzles to solve and every room had its own speaker with time to answer questions. Great experience!

👍👍 The Lonely Oak (Lonely Oak) stands on the crown of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. A wonderful stopping place for young and old. Then walk in 10 minutes to the accessible, child-friendly and cozy restaurant Het Berghuis for a delicious pannekoek. NB the 4-season poster of the Lonely Oak is also available...

👍👍 Really nice museum about tobacco cultivation, with videos full of interesting facts, with many attributes for tobacco cultivation, and of course the tobacco leaves hanging high in the tobacco barn, so you can experience the smell yourself. Really worth it!
