UPDATED REVIEW The Salvador International Airport (the actual name is Deputado Luís Eduardo Magalhães International Airport—airport code “SSA”) is located about 20 to 30 minutes (depending on where you're staying) from the culturally and historically significant city of Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. It's not large at all, but it's clean and well-organized, and the employees are all very friendly and helpful. There are 3 main airlines that serve this airport: Azul (my favorite), GOL and LATAM, but they also receive flights from others, including TAP. You won't need 2 hours to check in for domestic flights because of the limited traffic here, which is a pleasure. Although small, you have some good options for dining, including Mesa de Tereza (upscale Bahian food), Abdul (Arabic snacks and dishes), Bob’s (fast food, burgers), a gelato stand and a few more. My favorite part of exiting or entering the airport is passing through the “bambuzal” (a large bamboo grove which is super-beautiful). I am always happy to come here, and always sad to leave, but SSA Airport makes it easy to do both. ORIGINAL REVIEW Salvador International Airport (SSA) is also known as Deputado Luís Eduardo Magalhães International Airport (some politician). This is actually the third name for this airport (the first name was Santo Amaro do Ipitanga Airport from 1925-1955, when its name was changed to Dois de Julho (July 2nd) International Airport, which is the Independence Day of the State of Bahia). It is located about 30 minutes from Salvador (I wonder why they built the city so far from the airport?). There is a train and a shuttle that you can take, or you can access it via metered taxis or Ubers. There are a few decent restaurants and cafes in the food court, and there are lots of clean toilet facilities; they also offer free unlimited wi-fi, which is really nice. Parking is convenient and inexpensive. If you’re going to rent a car here, my advice is to stick with the larger, more well-known companies to avoid a bad experience.

It's not a big airport, it's clean, easy to navigate. If you are a smoker, there are no smoking lounges over there. I don't smoke, I vape and this is also not allowed anywhere in the airport(only outside). What you really should now, is that you will need to be there very early before your flight. The employees are very, but very slow.

The airport itself is a good one, with pretty views and reasonably maintained installations. I would like to see more store options in the boarding area, but this is not a big issue. It´s a medium to small size airport (in EU or US terms), easy to access, park or move inside it. The taxi (Uber) area though is a complete disaster. Confusing and dangerous with people trying to offer you cars and rides. It's an incredible mess for such a important airport. No police can be found, nor anyone from the airport team. I would strongly advise to make arrangements for transportation in advance.

I felt as if I was in another place. In Europe maybe. Made me remember the airport in Denmark. It's quite beautiful and very easy to eat, buy things, and to move around. Many places to sit. Clean bathroom. Excellent!!!

Getting better. However, stone don't stay open after 10 pm. This is bad for flight at night. You don't have option to buy some souvenir after pass the game of check in.

Shame! the airport is really old and is still under renovations! 4 years now??? I see foreigners complaining no one speaks English, hello? it is Brazil, people don't care about other languages! sad but true! you can take an uber here it will cost 1/3 of taxis prices! air con does not work properly! avoid it if you can!

I just got back from my vocation from Brazil and I was impress how beautiful is the Salvador International airport is, of course still growing that's why you see a little construction that s doesn't bother anyone, but is to get the service better, very clean airport, amazing local shopping for souvenirs, delicious and a big variety of places to eat. I was impress with a lot of employees spoke English and Spanish. The only thing I suggest is to have more places with plagues to charge phones. But definitely I recommend.

Very nice airport. Clean toilets, good variety of food (also healthy and organic food) and nice shops. The seating area is calm with wooden seating options and plenty of outlets to charge your phone.

Recently had a face lift and is much more convenient and with opening of new stores and restaurants are very welcome! If you are having lunch or snack, there are much better option after you go thru security There are only one parking at annex to the airport and is expensive, if need to leave for couple of days there are few other parking outside of airport and are much cheaper, free pick up bus. Ground floor is for arrivals and 1st floor for departure, boarding are done on 3rd floor. One problem with this airport is the signs are not relevant and confusing, also very few toilets are available. There are several way to reach this airport, by taxi, bus and now we have metro service connected with shuttle bus. Hotel near by: Ibis, Novotel and several others, no shuttle service. there are two taxi service you can pre pay for your destination or taxi at designated area. Avoid non licensed cab to avoid problems…

Plenty of facilities available for people waiting for their flights, with a good level of cleanliness. Reasonably well organized with plenty of willing helpers. Access to public transport is difficult, but taxis and parking is much better. Be prepared for a long walk at times when your arrival is at the very last gate

Ezquiel had me check a berimbau and LATAM lost the item before it arrived at JFK. Not good. Why was i not allowed to carry-on the item?

It's clean, new wooden furniture, and friendly staff. The boarding area does not have comfortable seats except a few hammock chairs; which are consistently occupied. The chairs are wooden, so it is uncomfortable for those who are staying longer than one hour. For people looking to socialize and/or have a place to listen to music and relax, there are no bars or comfortable restaurants. We went to the burrito spot, and their food was good; but the set up is to not stay longer than eating. Late in the evening, the air conditioning was very strong and cold. (I recommend bringing a thick sweater and pants).

The airport is fine, but I think that there is no need for two X-ray processes when traveling abroad from there. Also, after doing customs there just a basic and simple coffee shop

This is the worst airport ever. We went trough customs, our bags were checked. Then after customs we bought 2 bottles of water, which in the end we were not allowed to bring to the flight as we needed to go to another customs (for international flights only). So we ended up paying for stuff which we were not allowed to bring 200 m further along the gate. Weird.

Achei confuso a retirada de bagagens, mas o local é bem sinalizado.

  • 3/5 Alex K. 5 years ago on Google
Just fine. It was quick and the place is small to get around. Baggage did not take long and pickup with Uber was conveniently located. The airport is a bit far from the historical part of town so that is a bummer but rides are cheap.

A backwards kind of airport where you pass through security and there’s shops selling food and drink so you stock up on water. Then when you walk to your gate (for international flights) you find a second security post scanning bags where they confiscate the drinks you just brought. Be warned - buy your drinks only once you have passed the second security. It’s also very cold in departures so bring layers.

Quite possibly the U.S. TSA trained the customs officers... they are a bit rude.

Who needs english at an international airport?? Sure no one here... Also thes make announcements all 30 seconds. That is really annoying. Worst international airport that I know!

Very little food post security, and it's all extremely overpriced. Whole terminal is under construction. No lounges.

For a good healthy lunch, and to sit somewhere quiet, go to Piazza di Pizza, I the food court. All the restaurants and shops are land side.

Muito bom,mas a retirada das bagagens da onde a gente desce é muito longe e ainda a bagagem colocado na esteira. E se é tomado alguma informação nem todos os funcionários não sabe informar sobre a bagagem despachada.

(Translated by Google) Salvador Airport is one of the most modern in the country, being the entrance gate for several flights from abroad, as well as a route for connections and stopovers from all over Brazil. Leave the airport and head towards the parking lot on the ground floor of the Arrivals, turn left and walk to the external sidewalk where are the stalls and kiosks that sell the best acarajés and typical Bahian food. Take some to take away. All with a fair price without the abuse of the internal part of the airport. As in any airport, the food options inside are varied but are always expensive, as it is an international pricing and concession policy. Wide variety of shops selling handicrafts, clothes and gifts with typical souvenirs, but more expensive than in the center, neighborhoods and beaches.
