The San Antonio Museum of Art blew me away, at first I did not expect much from the first exhibit of contemporary art, but when we went into the other exhibits it exceeded my expectations. They have many Roman, Japanese and Chinese, Egyptian, Polynesian, and other ancient civilizations artifacts there as well dating back as far as 5000 years ago. Two employees in particular named Gabriel and Andy Were super helpful and nice when explaining the history behind the exhibits. They were very knowledgeable of the history and the deeper level meaning behind the paintings and artifacts! We were only planning on staying there for less than two hours and were there for four hours as it was fascinating!!! 10/10 museum!!!

    S. A. M. A is awesome. It's twenty bucks to get in, but if you payed a penny too see every piece of art in that museum you would under pay. There is art from before Christ, art from the Orient, Europe, Texan, modern and contemporary. If your thinking about going plan on spending at least three hours in there and wear some good walking shoes. Great visit and the staff was really helpful.

I love ❤️ art and the Artist they exhibit . Also they offer days where you can go free especially for senior citizens. If you go onto their website you could see special events going on for children and adults . For those who are endowed with money can also join membership . Or if you are like me to advantage of the free days Or volunteer . ☺️.

If I had known better when planning for a single day trip in San Antonio, I would spend all my time at the San Antonio Museum of Art. The collection spans over 5000 years in history and comes from all over the world. In fact, to fully appreciate each and every item, I doubt if a week would be sufficient to cover the four-story twin towers of treasures. The entrance is plain and down-to-earth, but man, I did not expect I could find well preserved potteries of 3000 BC at this place (to put it at scale, that's 5000 years ago, versus the 300 years old Alamo/Missions). I wish it will continue to be well maintained, well protected, and well funded.

I've been to San Antonio a number of times over the year but this was my first time visiting the art museum. This place is amazing. Such a wonderful and diverse collection of art. Exhibits are professionally displayed across four different levels. Staff was very knowledgeable and professional. This is a "must do" item on your itinerary while visiting SA.

Wow, this place is truly mind-blowing! Tickets were $20 and they were completely worth it. I did not expect to see so many artifacts from Rome, Egypt, Greece, and many other places around the world. The Egyptian Exhibit was particularly impressive, and if you are interested in Greek pottery or Roman sculptures you’ll have a lot to see as well. The artwork exhibits were amazing as well. There was art from all over America at the “Made in America” exhibit and that was very interesting to look through! The European art exhibit was very impressive, with some paintings dating back to the 15th century! This is a great stop in San Antonio and you’d be missing out if you didn’t check it out!

We are not normally museum people but we spent hours there. They had an incredible collection of so many different things. We really enjoyed their large collections of Japanese, Chinese, Oceanic, Greek and Roman artifacts. I was expecting a little more from Texas but otherwise would highly recommend as a must-see when visiting San Antonio

We went straight to Chihuly Persian ceiling when we arrived!! Entry looks like it's a small art museum. However, the 4 floor wing contained amazing pieces including a kneeling woman piece approx 5000 BC. A mandala. Great local Texas art exhibition too. Definitely more sculpture, objects than paintings.

I am still amazing by the massive art collection at this museum. The collection rivals the art museums in any major U.S. city and I highly recommend everyone visit this place. Located along the riverwalk, it is highly walkable and easy to access by food from downtown and even more so from the pearl district. Set aside several hours or likely a day to visit this great museum. Easily the best museum I've been to in San Antonio.

Beautiful architecture and design. Quite a large museum with 4 floors, so pick up a map at the entrance. SO many lovely pieces and a great layout. Because there wasn't a large crowd I was able to take many pictures. But I did not get to see the entire museum as I ran out of time! I will definitely visit again. The gift shop has great stuff too!

Amazing museum. I have been to some bigger places but this one had such a beautiful assortment of works. Its flow was very good even had some scenic views from the fourth floor of Downtown San Antonio. I would recommend a visit if you are touring SA.

I try never to miss this wonderful gem when I'm in town. Fantastic collection of art from many eras and geographies. A really nice Latin American art collection, and I particularly liked their modern selections. The floor with Texas art was also enjoyable. I appreciated that there were many female artists featured in all the exhibits. Also fun to walk up the river a bit and see the F.I.S.H. installation under the highway overpass.

The visit here wasn’t a first visit for me; however, after a year or so I was quite impressed! The sculptures were beautifully laid out - in the Classical Mythology Cupid is the meaning of passionate desire, affection, and attraction.

If you enjoy Egyptology, and ancient busts and statues this place has it, also has a nice collection of European and American/Texan art work. I’m not an art connoisseur but my wife enjoyed browsing the collection. I was not too impressed with the Wendy Red Star exhibit. Seems like there are richer American Indian art to be exhibited, but as they say art is in the eye of the beholder.

Recently went here with family in town after living in San Antonio for 16 years and was pleasantly surprised by the volume and quality of the exhibits. The displays primarily centered on historic Egyptian, Asian, and Greek art but there were also galleries for Latin, European, and Contemporary offerings. A fun way to spend a few hours staying cool and enjoying some art. Just a ten minute walk from The Pearl as well!

We visited on a Saturday to see the special superhero exhibit. We only intended to visit and leave. We ended up staying over an hour and my children and I loved it. I was honestly surprised by how well received it was. It was spacious (I didn't feel like I was going to knock something over with my stroller), a lot to see, and they had interactive maps. Currently, per website children under 12 are free, they have special hours for local residents, and is a blue star museum. Parking is located across the street and you have to scan a QR code. Photos were encouraged and the children asked to come back. I can not see a reason not to.

While on vacation in San Antonio we visited SAMA and really enjoyed the museum. The galleries are amazing and beautiful. Parking was super easy right in front of location. Elevators(Super elegant and beautiful) to the multiple floors. My son loved the super heroes display (Aug 20222) and he loved it. Next time we are visiting San Antonio will definitely visit again.

The museum was delightful. Well worth the trip. This collection of art and history felt well rounded, being from all cultures, well priced, and the presentation and lighting were expertly done. A bit of walking to be had, but plenty of space to sit down and rest while you enjoy. The contemporary art was fantastic and well worth seeing In person. The sand mandala was my favorite.

Best art museum in town! SAMA has a fab mix of contemporary and ... not... pieces, and a rolling calendar of great temporary exhibits Best part, the staff and docents are *way* less uptight than at other art museums in San Antonio (like, for instance, museums that rhyme w Nick Fray) Favourite piece is the sand mandala that the museum got special permission to keep intact (generally mandalas are created specifically to be scattered by the elements - an offering). LOVE the pre-Colombian section. Current temp exhibit is beer-centric - Still Brewing Art - thru 09.03.23. It's small, but very insightful, in the museum that used to house Lonestar Brewing The building itself is beautiful, and quick walk up the Riverwalk to the other great historic former-brewery, The Pearl, or down the Riverwalk to the historic VFW post and beyond. Quite a bit of parking available. Museum admission is free on Sunday mornings and Tuesday evenings.

School field trip, 24 students for an art project. The Museum has a lot of range from ancient to modern art. Latin America to Egypt. Next time I want to explore the paintings more. Amazing exhibits. And it's the historic Lonestar brewery building. Just amazing

Amazing museum in the historic Lone Star Brewery building. A great diversity of art from the modern period, to greco/roman, egyptian, and more! Cannot understand why it took us so long to get there!

It was my first time coming, and I loved the place. There's a lot of variety, so you're not just walking through looking at the same thing over and over. The staff are really courteous and are more than willing to help you with any recommendations or questions. Granted, you have to get here early if you want a tour guide, but either way it's a pleasant experience, and a great way to spend the day.

I went a year ago, and comeback again last week. Management is valuable, attention, reception is good. Galleries are beautiful and the best, is that this museum is not reduced to the fancy European art, they include Asian, Aegyptian, Mesopotamian, Greek and Roman galleries, and also Latin American. It is crazy to have many aesthetic-cultural contributions from many times and spaces in one single place.

This is an amazing museum! HUGE and with so many artifacts from across the world. The permanent Oceania exhibit was a favorite because it was all new and unique to me. The traveling American Impressionist exhibit was beautiful, fabulous and so much more meaningful with its American scenes. Absolutely introduced me to things I’d never seen before. To truly enjoy each museum section and observe the details, you’d need a full week at least. Coming from Dallas, the contents of this San Antonio Museum of Art blew away all my expectations. Absolutely a gem!

Amazing! Nothing less than an exceptional experience throughout each exhibit. Not only is the art separated by time and place, the enough of pieces set for viewing is more than you can count. The pictures I'm uploading do not do it justice. You have to experience this place for yourself. I am in awe at how amazing and old some of the stuff in there is. I would surely go back and recommend all people to visit at least once. 5 stars mang!

We went specifically to take my 6 year old to see the Super Hero and Villians exhibit, and he loved it. It was a quick tour of statues. It took probably 15 to 20 minutes to get through it all, including pictures. We ended up going through the entire museum and seeing all the exhibits, and I was pleasantly surprised how awesome everything was. If you're military, it's free to get through as this museum is apart of the Blue Star Family. Parking was right across the street and only $5.

Visited the day after Thanksgiving. Parking in the front ran us $10. You have to use an app to pay but it covers you the whole day. The staff was very friendly. There is a map so you can find your way. I wish a lot more of the exhibits had more information than "head of a man" type of labels. Other than that, it was a great experience.

Fantastic museum with a mix of global, American and regional art. Loved the Rockefeller Latin American, Greek/Roman/Egyptian, as well as Asian collections. The building itself used to be the Lone Star Brewing Company, I believe? Gorgeous piece of architecture that closed before Prohibition and had various uses until becoming the museum in 1980 or so. There was a docent who was amazing in explaining the history of the building, the museum and surrounding area. Highly recommended.

This was truly a big treat. Way bigger than what I expected and it will take you several hours to fully enjoy this multi level exibit. The building features everything from Egypsian, Greek, Asian, Pacific Islander, European, Latin American and contemporary art. The museum also featureas a sesonal exibit. It was $11 to park across the street. The building is very wheelchair accesible and yes theres even art in the staircases. Weare comfy shoes and take your time. Its been a very long time since Ive been to a museums of this size.

Was on vaca, so we went on a Thursday morning. No wait. Sometimes, it felt like we had the place to ourselves. I appreciated the military discount. Thank you. We spent 3+ hours and didn't see everything. If you go, read the descriptions of items that catch your interest. Sooo informative.

This was a lot better than I expected. Children 12 and under are free. I loved the Egypt and Greek area. But they had many interesting areas. Also much bigger inside than it looked on the outside. Parking was only about 5 bucks right across the street. We went on a Saturday around 130 and there was plenty of parking.

Awesome museum to which my wife and I can’t wait to return! We took advantage of the free entry on Sunday mornings and almost had the place to ourselves. We stayed for two hours and didn’t even finish the wing we were in - so many interesting pieces that are unlike what I’ve seen even at the Smithsonian. Five stars!

Great museum, lots to see. The only negative experience was the young cashier eyeing me down in the gift shop as if I was going to steal something. She couldn’t take her eyes off of me which made me feel uncomfortable. I didn’t notice her staring at anyone else like that. Either way I will return.

I like that this museum always seems to be in a state of transition. They appear to always be working on the next art installation. Bonus round fun that Sundays from 10 to Noon and you get in free! FREE! Free and art are the two best words in the human language (except, of course for words "Free beer") Anyway, on one side they have amazing Egyptian, Roman, Greek, Chinese, Japanese and Pacific Islander art. The other side features Texas art and modern art. I love the reuse of the historic building, the cool glass elevators and the all around vibe of the collection.

The museum needs to remodel or use another bldg for their auditorium. The rows a so tight that it would be a big catastrophe if people had to evacuate in an emergency.

Great place to go and spend a few hours. The littles enjoyed it too. They were able to so relics that they've only read about.

  • 4/5 Jose O. 3 years ago on Google
Ok so over all this is a good place and I went many many many times. So that leads to why it’s only 4 stars to me. It seems like they rarely had anything new to see. It’s great for a mid size city but for one the size of San Antonio, it should be more. And that’s not the fault of the museum, it’s just not the kind of town that cares.

Amazing museum but staff profiles you if you have kids . The supervisor of security, a young woman reprimanded me for giving 3 creamies to my well behaved toddler on a bench . This museum is wonderful. Have family in town and wanted to get them out to see the San Antonio sites but also have been very good and staying home this year due to Covid. With that being said this is a wonderful place to go to stay safe during this crazy time. We went on a Tuesday around 1 pm (San Antonio residents are free starting at 4p) and there was no one there and so, so much to see. Currently exhibiting Greek, Roman and Egyptian art as well as a the “Exquisite Adornment - Turkmen and Miao jewelry” which let me tell you is impressive. There is even work by Kehinde Wiley. Was so captivated by some of the work I purchased a print in the gift shop. Again, will definitely be returning.

Awesome museum, on all the bus tours we took, nobody got off here which is a shame. The Asian galleries were fantastic.

I cant remember exactly how much we paid. Its been awhile since we went. People at the desk were very sweet and took the time to go over everything with us and recommended the best way to start our tour. Exhibits were awesome☺ Loved the catwalk!

We visited the SA Museum of Art with family from out of town, and I was pleasantly surprised at the size of the museum, and the variety and quality of the exhibits! My only disappointment was that one of the elevators was down at the time of our visit, which made getting around a little more difficult for one of the members of our party that uses a cane. Also, several rooms were off limits due to flooding. We look forward to going back and exploring again when those exhibits reopen!

Love the exhibits. Such beautiful art and scenery. The whole feel is amazing. Went on a free family day. They had free art activities. Enjoyed very much. Family friendly They charge for parking! But it’s all day parking.

We accidentally arrived at a time when a museum tour for kids was starting so we were allowed to join them which was great. Everyone working at the museum was super friendly and we found the exhibition engaging, both for the adults and for our 3 & 5 year old. It is worth waking in from the Riverside walk, some other neighbouring areas are somewhat dodgy so be careful.

Well, the museum is actually nice, but I've visited it 4 times the past years, and well, this last time I visited was well the same as the other times, and well, most of the floors were close due to maintenence or under construction, over all I recommend it. I think the review will be higher when they open the sections that were closed the day I went. Here are some pictures a couple thinks they have.

We totally enjoyed this Museum amazing detail on old treasures like I've never seen before. It's amazing how engineers turned the old Lone Star brewery into this gorgeous museum if you live in San Antonio or visiting you MUST take this awesome museum in! Thank you guys for a great time with my wife and daughter

Nice museum, just wish I had more time. I only had about an hour and there was SO much to see. Probably have 2 hours to do it justice, but there are lovely exhibits from Ancient Egyptian and Roman to contemporary Mexican and American art.

The lay out of the museum is very organic and allows you to wander. So full of artifacts from across different time periods. Plus the way they have the Asian culture sections lighting set up make it feel like you are discovering something for yourself.

This museum is a must see when you are in San Antonio. The building is originally from the 1880s and it was a brewery. The museum has been here since 1981. And the collection is full of impressive pieces from throughout art history, antiquity to Kehinde Wiley and Montenegro! Plus the museum staff is very friendly and helpful and store is worth visiting for jewelry and gifts for people who have everything.

I was blown away by this museum! I went on a rainy day by myself and had a wonderful time. I really enjoyed how all of the wings were organized. Despite it being a Saturday, the noise level was low and everyone was respectful. A friendly security guard started talking to me in the Pre-Colombian art section and we had a nice discussion on how technically skilled these cultures were. This museum is also one of the only places in America with an in-tact Tibetan sand mandala. I never thought I'd see one up close before, and the fact that this one has not been ritualistically swept away was very special. They have wheelchairs available and the entire museum is incredibly accessible. Knowing this, I will definitely be back and I can bring my mom.

The preservation of history and cultural memory is always a commendable endeavor, and The San Antonio Museum of Art (SAMA) not only accomplishes, but far exceeds that task brilliantly. The whole experience from the parking lot to the gift shop. The layout of the different gallery floors is tasteful and conveys a cohesive story of any given culture per collection.

Lovely and quiet museum. We didn't have enough time to fully explore as it was the final stop of a full day. The gift shop wasn't very interesting and rather overpriced.

Fun time with the kids. We have been a few times on the free days. Worth going even if art isn’t your favorite thing.
