I visited the Catedral de San José a few years ago while in Antigua, Guatemala and it was an awesome experience. This parish is absolutely beautiful and it’s 100% worth checking-out while you’re in Antigua. Take a walking tour if you can, as this place has incredible history. You must go see the ruins of the original cathedral when you visit as well - it’s amazing to witness the history here! 10/10 recommend!

The entrance to the ruins is located on the side of the old cathedral, on Calle 5a Oriente. It costs 20Q to get in and if you wish, you may get a guide for an additional 50Q. if you decide to get a guide know that he may steer you towards his favorite vendors and you'll spend some time, and likely money, at their stalls. The ruins are fairly spectacular, as old churches go. The most interesting thing about this church is that its the resting place of both Pedro de Alvarado and Bernal Diaz, of the conquest of Mexico fame. Just in case you need to know, if you're hoping for the "sanitarios" you'll find none here, so come prepared.

One of the focal points of Antigua, this historic church has been rebuilt upon this site at least once. What is cool about this church is the park which is right in front. It is a hub for locals to sell their wares. In this case, fantastic hand made tapestry, clothing, and rugs. The vendors are loaded down with many heavy textiles, and have a lot of interesting, unique things to offer. There is a lot of shade trees here, and it is a great place to bring your lunch to eat during a hot day! If you are in town and can spare an hour or more, then this is a nice retreat!

Incredible sight. Thank goodness I figured out the ruins are around the corner and not just on the street face. A ticket costs 20 Q and is well worth it. I went in early on a Monday morning and it was completely empty. All I could hear were the pigeons.

Nice Cathedral. Be sure to look at the back side. You need to go around the block to the right side. We paid a guide to give us information. It was worth hearing him tell us all the information and not just look at the structure of the cathedral.

Amazing ruins. In the square, we met a guide named Roberto Nathaniel who took us on an amazing tour, filled with fascinating information and stories. I really enjoyed the Mayan stories that he shared. He showed us catacombs, one of which has a black sculpture of Jesus, and what looks like an indigenous person. All, very cool

One of the most stunning ruins I have seen. It’s so well preserved and picturesque. It’s very beautiful to watch the clouds pass by through the roofless nave, really beautiful. There is 20 Q entrance paid in cash. Inside there is not much to read on, couple of posts with information in spanish but there are picture/painting how the cathedral looked before its destruction. If you want to know more I’d recommend booking one of the walking tours.

The partially restored church faces Central Park is active and allows tourists if they are quiet and reverent. This part is beautifully done. The majority, still in ruins, can be toured for a small admission fee; but is well worth it just for the history. Admire the arches and stucco relief work that remains. Go into the catacombs and see where people were interred. It takes a while to get through all of it because of its massive size.

(Translated by Google) The cathedral of Santiago had three constructions; the last one was consecrated in November 1680 and was the work of the master Joseph de Porres. In 1718, after the San Miguel earthquakes, Diego de Porres repaired the vaults, the arches, the dome, the second body and the facade. The main altar was standing under a dome, supported by sixteen columns lined with hawksbill and decorated with elaborately worked bronze medallions. The image of the Virgin Mary and the twelve Apostles, made of ivory, were placed on the ledge. In 1743 the cathedral of Santiago was elevated to metropolitan, whose festivities were celebrated with great pomp in February 1745. The canopy was driven from Europe by the illustrious Mr. Marin who transported it to Veracruz where he delivered it to Bishop Molina, who was going from Road to the city of Santiago de los Caballeros de Guatemala. Knowing that the bishop was arriving, the parties were arranged for the solemn reception and the illustrious dean of the Mithras, the town hall of the church, many members of the clergy, distinguished neighbors and the prelates of the religious left in carts pulled by Mules to receive the visitor. Upon arriving at the archbishop's palace, they were received by numerous clergy, schoolchildren of the Tridentine College and Seminary of Our Lady of the Assumption. There was a tedeum through the Choro chapel of Master Kyrós and then they went to the Palace, where the chapel was richly decorated. After the ceremony, it was decreed that on November 14, 1745, the exaltation parties be held. Parish of San José around 1840. The parish, established in 1804, operates in what was previously the entrance to the cathedral, and its nave is where the southern bell tower was located. Note that the bell towers of the cathedral were still standing, although damaged and abandoned. That day the bells rang early, and numerous cohetillos were blown up. [8] At nine o'clock, the public powers went to the cathedral, which was adorned with great care and where there was a solemn mass. When the pallium was imposed on Archbishop Pardo and Figueroa there was a ringing of bells and cohetillos and gunpowder castle in the square in front of the cathedral, followed by a luxurious banquet to the civil and ecclesiastical authorities in the archbishop's palace. The party continued all night, with numerous pyrotechnic games. [9] The following days the different regular orders made their own celebration and there were also indigenous and secular dances, horse races and bullfights in the main square during the eight following days. The archbishop then went to his country house in Milpas Dueñas, where the festivities continued for another week, with bullfights provided by Joseph de Naxera, Joseph de Arrivillaga and Miguel de Coronado. The historian Domingo Juarros considers that in those amusements fifty thousand pesos were spent. The earthquakes of Santa Marta in 1773 caused serious damage to the structure of the cathedral, restoring two of its chapels in the early nineteenth century. Underneath the structure is a crypt, in addition to a set of tunnels whose utility is unknown. The cathedral housed the remains of the conqueror Pedro de Alvarado who had been transferred at the request of his daughter in 1568, but disappeared as a result of its destruction by the earthquakes of 1773.

The Cathedral is a beautiful building with interesting history and previous church ruins behind it. It sits on a site of the church originally constructed in 1541. The Cathedral has earned a UNESCO World Heritage Site status and is centrally located facing the Central Park (Parque Central, Plaza Mayor), a place of gathering for both locals and visitors. The ruins allow tourists to imagine the grandeur of the Cathedral at the time, including some of its dark history moments. The high altar is one of the most preserved areas of ruins. The visit to the Cathedral and the ruins is highly recommended.

The Antigua Guatemala Cathedral is a beautiful building with interesting history and previous church ruins behind it. It sits on a site of the church originally constructed in 1541. Several earthquakes led to its demolition in 1669. A new building was constructed and consecrated in 1680. Subsequent earthquakes in 1717, 1751 and 1773 ruined the city with the last one causing substantial damage to the church which is why impressive ruins today are available for viewing for a fee (Q20) to tourists (attending the Cathedral is free of charge). Some of the ruins include sacred art that has been a subject of restoration and debate. The high altar is one of the most preserved areas of ruins. The visit to the Cathedral and the ruins is highly recommended.

A very grand and beautiful place. There is a small entrance fee but it is worth paying. A unique place made up of several arches. I think it would be great to visit at night, and I would like to visit it next time a concert is held here.

One of the most beautiful sites in Antigua. Combination of restored and preserved cathedral provides a fascinating contrast. Definitely worth accessing the former cathedral area behind the front facing building. It has an open roof where it had previously fallen from seismic activity and time. And it also has beautiful architecture.

Beautiful historic site that is amazing to visit and see the remains of this church from the 1500s. Going on non holiday, weekdays seems to be the best time for some good photos, because it was pretty empty. I've been before, but you always notice different things on the next visit. Honestly a great place to check out.

Right in the heart of Antigua, it's one of the towns most iconic structures and well worth a visit. A lot of people don't realise that there are ruins out the back accessible from the street. They're cheap to get into and fun to explore. Downstairs you can even see a dungeon and a couple of years ago they did renovations to help conserve the ruins, culture and heritage of the site.

(Translated by Google) It is undoubtedly one of the most emblematic buildings in Antigua Guatemala, impossible to describe all the architectural beauty in a Google review, it is better to go see it for yourself. Its architect was the famous Jose de Porres, who is one of the great masters of the 17th century whose works, although few, can still be seen. In addition, in one of the crypts of these ruins are the tombs of several illustrious figures of the conquest of Guatemala. Among them, Bishop Francisco Marroquín, Pedro de Alvarado and Bernal Díaz del Castillo. This is a place that you must visit many times since you can make impressive photo shoots. I recommend that you hire a local guide, otherwise you will only see stones and columns and you may not enjoy your experience.
