Antigua is a small city surrounded by volcanoes in southern Guatemala. It’s renowned for its Spanish colonial buildings, many of them restored following a 1773 earthquake that ended Antigua’s 200-year reign as Guatemala’s colonial capital. Notable architectural examples include baroque La Merced church. Built 1,530.17 m above sea level in an earthquake-prone region, Antigua Guatemala, the capital of the Captaincy-General of Guatemala, was founded in 1524 as Santiago de Guatemala. It was subsequently destroyed by fire caused by an uprising of the indigenous population, re-established in 1527 and entirely buried as a result of earthquakes and an avalanche in 1541. The third location, in the Valley of Panchoy , was inaugurated in March 1543 and served for 230 years. It survived natural disasters of floods, volcanic eruptions and other serious tremors until 1773 when the Santa Marta earthquake destroyed much of the town. At this point, authorities ordered the relocation of the capital to a safer location region, which became Guatemala city, the county’s modern capital. Some residents stayed behind in the original town, however, which became referred to as “La Antigua Guatemala”.

Spanish style town with stone streets. Authentic culture, lots of coffee, jade, jewelry and much more. AirBnB villas are so cozy you’ll want to stay, but the prices are a bit heftier than the rest of the lil towns.

Because of the festival, I had to wait for many hours in traffic just to get to the parking lot. When I got there, then a small bus (free service) took me to Antigua (2 minutes trip) the bus was beautifully decorated with flowers 😍... When I got to the central park of Antigua... OMG! Everything was beautiful!! Waiting for so long was really worth it!!... Next time I'll stay in a hotel 😁

UNESCO heritage city. Cobblestone streets. Volcanos in all directions. Plenty of restaurants and shops. Best place in the country to buy jade.

I can’t remember the name of the shop, but I bought some coffee at antigua Guatemala. The best!! They said it was from volcanic soil and was more flavor an deep brown color. It did a lot of crema and was tasty. I spent around 15 $ on a small jar.

Antigua is one of the most beautiful tourist destinations that everyone should visit when in Guatemala. The town is easily walkable and offers a large variety of hotels and restaurants. Parking may be difficult to find, especially on a weekend, so your best bet is to get further away from the center park.

A UNESCO protected site, it is a monument to what in the 16th century was the most beautiful and culturally developed CITY in All of the Americas. The multiple ruins of Italian Renaissance inspired cathedrals will attest to this. The city is beautiful enough as it is, but to nestle it between three amazing volcanoes makes it truly breathtaking.

Parking is hard to find and you must pay for it in Antigua. Look for the police officers in blue colored vests to purchase a "parking ticket,."
