This cathedral isn’t as famous as other cathedrals in France or Europe but it rivals them in terms of its beauty. It is large but has intricately detailed decor. The stonework was phenomenal in both quantity and quality. The interior was amazing and I was taken with the incredible stained glass windows. I didn’t pay them enough attention at first so be sure to look carefully at them. Wonderful feat of engineering.

Gorgeous stained glass, and a joy to visit at any time but especially when the sun is streaming directly through the windows. I wish I understood the stories depicted by the windows, but alas. Even if you’re like me and can’t understand the stories or aren’t religious, this is a beautiful place to pause during the day and take in the sights.

Definitely go visit this cathedral. I haven't seen anything like this since I've been to Notre Dame. make sure you book a tour or read up on the cathedral before you visit because there's a lot of history. It's very rare that you see ceilings this high with in a cathedral. Definitely mesmerizing, I can't wait to bring my family next time!

Metz Cathedral, located in Metz which is between Paris and Strasbourg, is an extraordinary example of Gothic architecture. Its towering spires and intricate stained glass windows are truly impressive. Inside, the Rose Window is a highlight. This cathedral's historical and architectural significance makes it a captivating destination, offering a glimpse into the past. It's free to enter and you can buy and light candles inside. Highly recommended!

Absolutely amazing cathedral! It's classed as Rayonnant Gothic architecture as opposed to high Gothic that dominated French architecture in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. This eight hundred years old Cathedral still stands with amazing beauty both inside and out. It's noted for its stunning stained-glass windows (supposedly the best and most of any stained-glass windows in any churches in Europe), the quadripartite vaulted ceiling and one of the most spectacular liturgical choir! My second visit here and it's just as stupendous as the first time. This is one of the most stunning Cathedrals in France and absolutely and highly recommend a visit. It opens to the public to explore every day, except during services, and closed during lunch time hours. One of my all time favourite Cathedrals.

I absolutely LOVE this cathedral. I have been all over Europe and seen MANY cathedrals. Metz is one of my favorite! I absolutely love the dark gothic style of the inside and out. The outside of the cathedral is just massive and super impressive to see. The stained glass on the inside is incredible!! The cathedral has a small parking lot in front of it, which gets very crowded during tourist season, but there are lots of larger parking garages in the surrounding area. The surrounding area is gorgeous, it's full of cafes and restaurants, little shops, etc. It is what you would expect of a quaint little french town! There are many places on the river and lots of other places to see in the area! Gorgeous cathedral and town!

What is the 3rd highest cathedral in France? Metz cathedral! built on an ancient site dating to the 5th century and dedicated to Saint Stephen. It is said to have contained a collection of his relics but only the shrine of Saint Stephen was the sole structure spared during the sack of 451 by Attila's Huns. But the current cathedral in the Gothic style was proposed in about the year 1220 and was completed in the mid 16th century. What is so impressive are the ornate statues outside the building and the many huge tained glass windows. You will be in awe when you see them! Highly recommended for a visit!

Shocked by how stunning this cathedral was. It was absolutely enormous. Perhaps the largest church I’ve ever been in. The outside is an architectural wonder, but the inside takes your breath away with its sheer elevation and open space. If you are into European churches, this is a must see. Even if you’re not, I’d still say you shouldn’t miss it if in Metz.

Absolutely stunning. Beautiful and peaceful. Chagall's stained glass windows are just pure miracle. Visit visit visit and one more time visit. Cheers

We were lucky enough to arrive just in time for the service. It was great to experience it even we didn't understand any of it. The church is really beautiful nice, and is located in the city centre.

Beautiful church in the center of the city. It’s a paradise for architectural enthusiasts. The cathedral is quite large and well build. They had Christmas decorations the time we went there. There is a small Christmas market just adjacent of the church. Definitely recommend to visit.

It is a great place. We have been there for a Sunday afternoon. Unfortunately did not see any ceremony happening but just visiting and walking around was enough too. The cathedral is very clean with high ceilings and Colourful detailing of both architecture and art . You need to spend hours to get the meaning of the message transferred via pictures on the mosaic glass walls

Metz Cathedral is located in the city center and can be seen from afar. The cathedral was built around 1220 and is a fantastic example of Gothic architecture. There are many ornate statues and decorative elements on the outer walls. The cathedral has a fantastic interior area, with a very high ceiling and large stained glass windows. The cathedral can be viewed almost completely and photos can also be taken. Entry is free

It's amazing to step inside such an old cathedral. This building has one of the largest collections of stained glass in the world. There are many well-known artists who have contributed to it. It is also very interesting to see a model of the cathedral showing what was built in each century during its many changes.

I only saw the outside since I got there after-hours, but it is a magnificent building. If you're in the area and have an opportunity to go Metz, definitely go and definitely add the cathedral to the list. Also, if you can see the light show (which may be hard to do depending on train schedules and your transportation needs), I would highly recommend!

Beautiful. Large, quiet, peaceful. Typical glass tinted windows. Amazing architecture. Also try to visit it during the night when it's all lit up from outside. ✨

Metz Cathedral is a breathtaking masterpiece, adorned with intricate details that leave one in awe. The sheer grandeur of the structure is awe-inspiring and captures the essence of history. It's unfortunate that the historical information texts are exclusively in French, which might pose challenges for non-French-speaking tourists. Nevertheless, the cathedral's beauty and architectural richness transcend language barriers, offering a mesmerizing experience that speaks to the depths of human creativity and devotion.

I usually don't like churches, but this one is different. The windows are so beautiful from the insinde and there were tables with small workshops for papercrafting for children.

One of so many great Cathedral in Europe. This one in Metz was so stunning and I happened to be there on a Miss at Easter day 2023. I was so important by the choir and music

Beautiful is honestly the only way to describe the cathedral. Quite and friendly welcoming place. Went to the Christmas market and rode the ferris wheel. Beautiful view of the city and from the top you can see the details of the cathedral. The market makes it way through town and is worth the time it takes to walk. The Staind glass windows are amazing and I can’t imagine them being constructed years ago. Google the cathedral and you will find out some interesting facts about it and how long it took to build.

A stunning place to visit in Metz. Mostly the glass windows are so amazing to observe. I recommend to visit the place during daylight hours, cause it's so magical to watch the lightened up glasses with the sunlight.

One of the most beautiful Cathedrals I have visited. Very impressive from the outside and even more impressive inside. The Cathedral has beautiful stained glass windows. Absolute must-see in Metz!

Very beautiful structure, inside and out. Not even the ongoing construction on the outside took away from it's majesty.

  • 5/5 Scott G. 1 year ago on Google
The size and age of this Cathedral is awe inspiring. The architecture, the stained glass, the history is amazing. Took the tour for €8 and even though it's entirely in French and I don't know any French it was worth the money. The guide is great, he takes you into the tombs and a back room that holds some of the artifacts from some of the Saints that have lead the church. Even after you've seen it the tour guide points things out things that make you relook at what you saw and you see more. Highly recommend even for the non religious and non French speakers.

American Review 🇺🇲 - Beautiful decently large church. Loved all the stained glass. Free to get in, but you can pay to do a tour. It's definitely worth a visit! It's not like you can miss it when visiting Metz. 🤣

Can only comment on how beautiful the cathedral looks at night and it's stunning Visited the Christmas market of Metz and saw the cathedral on our tour of the town... Would love to return and see it in the light of day and discover how it must look both outside and inside...

Impressive what engineering allows you to build, the structure is incredibly. Unfortunately, that was probably done using abusive methods of workers to worship something, while privileged people benefit from it. The glasses are also impressive with their colors and details.

Always a good starting point to seeing the city. Parking is like any other city but it's never to far out if reach. It lands you in one of the better starting points for shopping and such while remaining a beacon to find your car! Lol. Beautiful architecture as well.

Magnifica Is a magnificent cathedral, if you’re in Metz is a must go spot. Is huge beautiful and so many particulars if you look attention to the details,

It is impressive but I've been spoiled by the cathedrals of Rome. They also didn't have any guided tour brochures left and the audio guide was not available when I was there. That was my fault though because I didn't realize the area to rent them is closed from 12:30-14:00. It was the same for the crypt tours. I wouldn't recommend stopping or going there just for a tour of the cathedral. I want to as I want to see some of these amazing architectural works of worship appreciated but this would be a no go on my list in the future
