Had a lovely evening sitting outside grabbing a couple of pints. The beer is cold and fresh. Food is good … fish and chips are crispy with a good batter, bangers and mash … good mash, the sausage is a bit more frankenfurter vs sausage but still good.

A very old authentic English style pub situated on the banks of the Singapore River at the end of a terrace of bars on boat Quay. In the middle of the floor stands an old English post box very quirky, an old traditional wooden bar you would of seen in London 80 years ago serving traditional Sunday roast dinner, the whole place is a well kept throw back from the old colonial days of Singapore with very friendly and helpful staff

had to come here after visiting Muddy Murphy's irish pub and no regrets! this time i went for a Bacon Butty and the Beef and Guinness Pie and of course, the holy grail guinness stout. Bacon Butty - A simple yet tasty dish. I think the highlight of this dish is the sandwich bread. Slices are toasted both ways and buttered to perfection giving it a nice, moist and salty finish. Bacon slices nicely seared but nothing too great about the marinade, quite homemade tasting! quite like the fries as well, chunky crispy and too overly oily. Beef & Guinness pie - A dish to go for on a rainy day. It's so unique as well! just look at the size of that puff pastry! Pastry was v good, light and fluffy and enough bite to it, a good dough. You will not be disappointed by their beef stew hiding underneath! Beef is so tender and melts in your mouth, the stew just goes along great with the pastry or alone. For me, I drizzled some stew onto my Bacon Butty sandwich xP Guinness stout - Crisp, dry and chocolatey. So refreshing! never a dull one. Happy hour is until 8pm fyi~ overall a great foody experience! would love to catch the seats by the river next time.

Visited this place for Sunday roast with a visitor in town as suggested by a friend to try since my usual fave place that serves up an awesome roast (Oxwell & Co) for me and my girl squad had decided to close down its business for good :(. The meal at this place was decently alright though the roast was a tad dry. However, the meal itself wasn't the reason that prompted me to give the place such low ratings with upcoming negative feedbacks but rather the poor service instead. I had wanted to order a Bloody Mary to go along with my roast so when the female server (I believe her name might have been Jessica too) first came along to place the cutlery down for me and my friend, I checked with her if they might serve that cocktail. She was just right by me but without any eye contact or lifting up her head at all while she was harshly placing the cutlery on the table, she simply gave me a hard "No" followed by "We don't have tomato." and rushed off. There was no checking if I would have liked some other drinks or any recommendations made at all which thus led to me to not ordering any drinks while dining there the entire time cos I was fairly offended by the bad attitude I was treated with. My poor friend sitting across me was also taken aback as he he was fairly new in town and I could not be more sorry about my country's standard of service as misrepresented by this one place, especially being an image training consultant who conducts programmes for front liners on service excellence as well. To make matters worse, my meal was removed before I was done. Half way through my conversation with my friend with my cutlery placed down for awhile, a male server came up suddenly and removed my whole plate without asking if I was done with my food and hurried off before I could react. 1) There was no checking if I was done with my meal. 2) My cutlery placement did not indicate I was done so the server needs training in this aspect too. 3) It was simply just rude to reach across us in the midst of our conversation without any signal and grab the plate away. Once again my friend and I stopped and looked at each other in astonishment. The bill came very fast though even before we asked for it. However, we were thankful for that bit and could not be happier to leave soonest possible so much so I could not even be bothered to share our ordeal there and then with the supervisor/manager on duty. One thing for sure, I will never visit Penny Black again nor make any recommendations to anyone else to visit this place especially when we'd love to be merry and order more on drinks. Definitely a first in a long time in which I did not even order a drink which said a lot on its own ....

It feels like there’s a cost cutting measure happening across bars in Singapore when it comes to beer pours. This one arrived and the head was a good inch plus below the full pint line so I asked if they could get a better pour and 30 seconds later the sassy waiter came by all huffy and told us it’s just because we didn’t “wait long enough” for the beer to settle. Just for argument’s sake we gave it 10 minutes, beer went lukewarm. And this is as high as it went. Come on guys - beer is SO expensive here. Just give us what we pay for. Not pleased. Would give them less stars but the food was decent. Not sure I’ll be going back

Great little British pub on the waterfront in Singapore. I had the “mini” fish and chips and it’s still a generous portion. The barkeep, Becca was super friendly.

Update 08Nov23: Tried their famous FishnChips- v nice & crispy - may be easily one of the best FnC in SG. So slightly higher rating. Late night snack - nothing to add so same comment as shared below earlier. Late nigh snack - Disappointed - The pic says 1000 words so I am not detailing. Btw, this was crispy boneless chicken. Disclaimer: usual daytime/evening food might be good, never tried. Beers - usual - same as you get any pub/bar. Personally, I used to come for old speckled hen, which is not served anymore. Another disclaimer: Just for beers, I like this pub and have always been here for drinks (old speckled hen). May try their daytime/evening food offering and hope to give a better review on food.

If it is just drinks alone, I would give it a 4* for the ambiance and the competitively priced $33 for 3 pints promo. Unfortunately we ordered bangers and mash to go along with the booze and it was lacklustre. The biggest complaint today when we were there was that when we asked for mustard to go along with the food, the waiter brought the whole jar for us and we noticed the mustard had expired since Aug. Not that it will kill me as it had just recently expired but as a dine in paying guest, I do think it is not acceptable to serve expired items. Also I do think during this pandemic period, it is more hygienic to just serve a small portion in a sauce dish or something to guests. Imagine I’ve COVID and I squeezed into the whole jar when helping myself to the mustard. The management should really look into this.

Great place for a drink and food. Sad to hear of your closure thanks to an unempathetic landlord. Sadly their are many such less then ideal landlords in Singapore that are ruining the F&B sector and will soon have NO tenants.

Great English pub at the corner of Boat Quay. What's better than Fish & Chips and a nice chilled pint of Guinness for a well deserved TGIF. Fresh red snapper with pale ale recipe deep fried and served straight to the table.. Then a gulp of good old Guinness.. Yums..

This is one of the few times I’ve gives only one star around the world, The service was the worst I’ve experienced in Asia. The waitress, a lady that works for the outdoor area, hit me in my hand. Yes, you are reading well! She hit me suddenly. This place shouldn’t use London in its name. When I told her that she shouldn’t hit people she told me I shouldn’t move my hands when talking and that that was my problem. She hits me (touching my hands) in the worst peak of the pandemia with 3000 cases of COVID in Singapur…bio security of the place is cero. Food was a waste of money…fish and ships are not acceptable. The only think acceptable was the beer. In the same area, just continue walking a little bit. Please, just walk 3 seconds more and you can enjoy a better place with more kind attitude, respectful and fun!

Penny Black has always been awesome! Been coming here for at least 10 years! It's one of the go to pubs for rugby and soccer matches. Thanks to Covid, business suffered tremendously. No sweat though, it'll get back to normal eventually.

I make a reservation to watch the game with friends at this place. But before the game start, they let so many people to stand in front that we barely see anything. Also, due to the amount of people, we had to wait at least 30min for the beer. Vibes is good but not sure if I will be here for any games soon.

Local Irish/English Pub. An institution in Singapore, older than 20 years. Was supposed to be shutdown in 2021, but after a public outcry the landlords decided to extend the lease. Great for drinks by the QUay. Excellent bar to watch the National Day Flyover as the helicopters and planes either fly directly over the bar or the entire show can be seen fly by.

Came here for pub trivia. Was fun. Staff were attentive. The chicken wings were suitably crispy. The quesadillas were kind of small hence somewhat pricey from my perspective but I could be biased as I'm used to large servings found in Australian pubs.

Expressing a big shoutout to Jason who works as a waiter at the bar. As he attended to our table late in the night, he was so kind and sincere in sharing with all the current items available for order, and the popular beers available to choose. I appreciated his kind gesture! It made the experience at the bar amazing. 😊 thank you!

Great location by the sea. Good selection of beers. The wait staff were really nice. Will definitely visit again. Few things to note that might spoil your experience: - I went with a vegan friend and quickly realized they had almost nothing vegan-friendly in the food menu except for fries and onion rings. And the day I was there, they were somehow out of onion rings making it difficult for my friend. So do keep that in mind. For vegetarians, you have a vegetarian quesadilla and that's pretty much it. - the reservation system is terrible. You need to contact them over Whatsapp. Don't expect a quick response. I had to wait more than an hour for them to tell me my reservation was confirmed.

Visited after work on a weekday. Staff weren't attentive, and food (had the hunters chicken) tasted rather bland and is very overpriced. So, just like a British pub, really! Nice location next to the river. Drinks were standard.

Friend made a reservation for a decent sized group (>6) but was given 1 bar table. Made it impossible to even sit around or even have proper space to eat. Should only have accepted the reservations by customers if they had reasonably size seating area for the group size indicated.

A very confused Victorian London pub that's really an Irish bar! Based on the river this little gem serves possibly the best burger I've ever had. Truly a great. Washed down with a Guinness this English pub in Singapore screams Irish but in a good way. It's a little expensive compared with the other places on the street but it is worth it. I would eat here again for sure
