For just a night’s rest this hostel suffices; but for anything but that do not go here. There is no social atmosphere at all, and whilst staff answers questions they do not seem happy to work there at all. Moreover, multiple long term residents live in the hostel and work in the city, at night all of them just hog the common room and sit on their phones, this really kills any remaining bit of social vibe.

The location was really good and the hostel was clean. But we the woman working there wasnt really nice. An hour before checking out time she was already annoyed that we hadnt checked out yet. Eyerolling and we could she was annoyed etc and impatience . Not a welcoming feeling.

Believe the other critical reviews on here & save your money. This place is terrible. There's certificates up on the wall about them being a hostel of choice in 2011. Well, things have gone down-hill like Eddie The Eagle since then. It's a cramped, old joint and people talking in the small social area right outside your bedroom will wake you up in the morning. The receptionist is about as welcoming as a dog with rabies.

We had a mixed experience here. The location is excellent close to MRT and Clarke Quay. The 4-bunk room was nice, the large locker was appreciated. The cost is low for Singapore. However, the lack of easy reception is very inconvenient for travelers. If you arrive before 4pm there is no reception available at all. The door is locked and you cannot store your luggage. This is different than every other hostel I've stayed in and was not clear during booking. On checkout, luggage storage is very limited to the point of being useless. Also the layout and atmosphere were both lacking. The only bathroom is near the front door and sinks are in easy view of the kitchen and living room and front door which is uncomfortable. There are many rules that stop any social atmosphere from blossoming and there are longer-term guests that impact the "backpacking vibe." It seems the hostel caters more to the long term stay and the backpacker is treated as an afterthought. The staff was kind to us, but blunt and frank about the many rules and the very limited reception hours. I would recommend looking elsewhere for a hostel with more flexible reception and one with a different atmosphere if that's important to you.

This accommodation is oook for the price considered it’s Singapore. However it’s by far one of the worst hostel I’ve stayed in my 3 months trip in South East Asia! The vibe of this hostel is very unfriendly and unwelcoming! The receptionist doesn’t look happy to be there, is unpleasant and often rude. When I was there a guy kindly opened the door for another backpacker who was looking for a room in the evening. The receptionist had a tantrum because of that. She got so mad and made the guests feel really uncomfortable. She even shouted to the backpacker to come with her and point at who opened the door for him. I understand that safety is important but wow this was too much! Never ever have I seen that before! That being said you should also know that from 1pm to 4pm you can’t check in and since the door is locked at all time it makes it impossible to leave your bag for the day if you arrive in those hours. It happened to me, I had to let my bag in the hallway. Even when I came back at 6 O’clock it took several minutes of ringing the bell before a guy came and told me to sit and wait in the lobby in a very patronizing and rude way… So that’s why I don’t recommend this hostel!

My husband and I stayed here for 3 nights at the beginning of our trip. It was an okay stay, not much of a social hostel, but it got the job done. Fantastic location, less then 20 minute walk to the gardens by the bay and marina bay. We stayed in a mixed 6 bed dorm. The rooms could use an upgrade, but the staff kept the place (especially the floors) quite clean. It is located on the 4th floor of an apartment complex, so be prepared for some stairs. Overall, the River City Inn was a place to just have a roof over our heads for a few nights but it is definitely a budget accommodation.

Avoid! The only positive thing about this hostel is the location. The reception is supposed to open at 7am, we waited half an hour for the staff who then checked us in in his underwear. Poor atmosphere, the restroom is always wet, the ac is turned on at night, but it’s still 27 degrees Celsius, bad smell everywhere, disgusting stains on the mattresses, the mattresses are completely worn out, the sink is pretty much in the living room/ reception area, my locker was broken, does not look like on the pictures!

Don't believe any of the positive reviews left for this accomodation as they are likely fake. Having stayed at multiple hostels, there is a certain standard that this accomodation fails to meet. For frequent travellers with luggage, there is no elevator in the building and the hostel is 4 flights of stairs up. The desk attendant is highly rude, has an attitude and comes off as a petty individual. The facilities are disgusting with showers across from the toilets and unclean sandles in the shower area which the guests are expected to use, such that if both the shower and toilets are used simultaneously, the smells are not exactly gentle on the nose. The kitchen sink is also in abysmal condition with mould lining the silicone on the basin. For frequent travellers, there is absolutely no social vibe present in this hostel at all due to the long-term residents being highly unsocial. The owner even tried to gouge us out of more money when we arrived which was months after the payments had been settled and confirmed. This accomodation charges a premium price for a pathetic experience. If you can avoid staying here, please do so.

I'm very disappointed with the state of the rooms—the living room and shared bedroom both have a persistent odor. The living room lacks sufficient light and is poorly decorated below basic standards. Moreover, the room is in bad shape, missing essential items like clothes hangers. Overall, the entire place seems to be poorly managed. When I requested a refund, the management only offered a redemption for a future stay. Considering this experience, it's doubtful that anyone would be willing to stay again for a redemption. Additionally, blaming the poor management on Covid doesn't seem like a proper excuse. I ended up losing nearly S$300 for just one night's stay here.

Very nice staff. The hostel is on the fourth floor without a lift--so beware if you are traveling with a lot of stuff. Overall value was generally good. The place is nicely located and easy to get around. Only complaint is depending on where you sleep relative to the a/c it can be hot or cold at night for you.

As a tourist, this hostel is very unwelcoming. Not only does the place smell but there seems to be a whole lot of long term stayers here so social interaction and making friends is limited. The owner comes into your room at the middle of the night and turns on the light for literally no reason. Make sure that you do your research if you really want to stay here, the only pro is the location.

Place is clean and tidy. Staff (and patrons at least when I was there) are friendly if you ask nicely. Location is really good as it’s walking distance from Chinatown. It’s also opposite Clarke Quay mall and MRT station. Beds were comfy too. Small benefit but a huge one for me was that they provide toilet slippers. Would definitely stay again if have to ☺️

Common area was well maintained, inviting and comfortable bathrooms and showers were great (yes wet sometimes but all a part of the cleaning) Doom rooms were fine. Beds were Abit meh and the blanket provided is pretty thin (maybe thicker is just my preference). I think the provision of the a/c overnight was great. Niesa who was running the place during my stay was delightful, accommodating and all-round lovely Location is great and for what they offer summatively place is a bargain. Will return if I need board in Singapore again

Hostel is clean and the beds are reasonably comfortable, although rather short (if you’re 6.3/190cm tall it’s a bit difficult). Offers the necessary amenities, not fancy but just about alright given the hostel standards in Singapore.

This is best place to stay for. very neat and clean, kind and helpful staff. Value for money it's cheaper than nearby hostels and nicely organized and clean. Washrooms and rooms are very clean done everyday. Clark quay location is very happening and connectivity is very good.

Very bad experience..the staff is non Co operative and they wont put the air con to save money.i asked them to give another cabin to store my luggage and even after 2 days the did nothing. Every time the cleaning staff ( who is also the receptionist) says she will speak with the manager or her boss is coming and simply looks in to her phone. Very poor experience . even we cannot keep our passport or belongings safely.

It is not a good backpacker hotel. The place is not clean and receptionist is an old uncle. It took like 20mins for a simple check in. What's more funny is the aircon is allowed from 9am to 9pm only and you are not getting a remote control. Well, the aircon is basically only normal temperature air. Not cold at all. It had passed it's good time. Please do not rent here if u expecting modern days hostel. In Singapore, they shall provide better in overall. I had much better experience for backpacker in Thailand than here! AVOID AT ALL COST

Relatively cheap since you're in Singapore. I had a nice stay nothing to complain about. Mr Henry is also accommodating. I'll come again if I'm in Singapore.

"Awesome vibe. Friendly atmosphere. Stylish hostel. Modern hostel." I really loved the location, being behind a highly trafficked street, and yet so quiet and quaint. This is very firmly in the realm of the best hostels! It feels really homely – has an ample sized kitchen and dining area and an area to chill on relaxing couches. This is an amazing place, run by wonderful people. The professionalism of Jackie, Henry and Celine was admirable. Celine brought such warmth and a caring atmosphere that I will truly miss. She's such a wonderful and loving person. Thank you for a very relaxed stay, I felt very comfortable at the hostel and felt very secure. The rooms were clean and comfortable, the facilities were kept to a high cleanliness standard. Cannot beat the location, easy walking to everything including food stalls. Thanks for everything! I highly recommend it Roger

4th floor and hard to find location. The stair has a scared rat running... Strictly staff but she is kind to give you any information when asking. Too dark to see thing inside the room. You should be careful with snoring sound and steps in the right top bed. It smells too, but the air condition is quite good, keep you sleep tidy

When I arrived at 9:15 p.m., they said that after 9 p.m. check-in was late, and asked me to pay $8 extra, and another $3.7 in taxes of some kind. You want a towel? Three dollars more, And the room itself, it's a mess and it smells. And the price makes it look like a three-star room. I'm not happy. Location is good for sure, everything else is 2 points.

The receptionist is really unfriendly and imposes aberrant rules. She speaks very badly and shows no respect for our stuff. However the location is very good and the rooms very clean (there are no sheets just a blanket, think of taking some with you). I recommend that if you have a small budget.

·+Ok the location is great, nest to the metro station, a walking distance from nightlife (Clark Quey), near to two shopping malls and not far away from china town. There is also a mini 7eleven across the street as well as a chain restaurant were you can try traditional breakfast with flawing coffee or tea. Lastly, the hostel offers free coffee, tea, filtered water, desktop computers to use. We stored our luggage here before check in because we arrived early in a public area, nest to the bathroom with no safety. THE NEGATIVE!!! ·-The building You are forced to remove your shoes before you enter the hostel. The are were you remove the shoes is the hallway and it is a common area of the building where as you may have guessed is not clean. Even when i bought new slippers from 711 they didn't allow me to wear them. The hostel is at the 3rd floor so with no elevator so if you have a big heavy bag you need to avoid this place. Also, in the building is housed one more hostel Red Doors i believe is the name, in whole Singapore you cannot find a more dirty entrance. All the travelers that smoked went down and put their cigarette buds on the plant of the entrance. I mean could the two hostels collaborate and put ashtrays in the entrance as well as clean all the buds from the plans and remove any trash? Insects So we were having breakfast and i noticed like 3 tiny insects on the bananas. I thought to myself its fruits, its natural to see bugs on them from time to time. The following night i was about to fill a glass with water and as i leave the cup on the kitchen counter i see again the same insects walking on the glass. The last day, i noticed again the insects this time in the room next to my locker. Breakfast This is not a breakfast more like a complimentary snack. They put on the common table two kind of loafs of sliced bread white and brown, a basket with bananas which sometimes were finished before i arrived and in HUGE jars in the middle they had butter, marmalade, peanut butter &chocolate spread. If you need something healthy or savory you have to eat somewhere else. Side note the last day we were about to check out at 7:45am and breakfast started at 7:00am the girl there overslept and the time was 7:30am before some other traveler buzzed the bell on the door to wake her up. Payment So according to Booking payment was though my card. But when we arrived they asked us to pay by cash. And then B send me an email telling me my card was declined and when we left i received an other email telling me the booking was cancelled. B asked for a receipt which i was never given. I am sure they play this scam on the travelers so they don't have to pay commission to Booking.

Pros - affordable, clean, beds are decent to sleep on. Friendly staff. WiFi is decent as well. Cons - No elevator, inn is located up 3 long flights of stairs. AC is not allowed on during the day. WiFi is turned off around midnight. Area is kinda shady at night as well. There were some miscommunication with the shuttle van that was supposed to pick us up from the inn on the day we're leaving for the airport. The van arrived half an hour late without apologies and the staff at the inn was quick to push the fault to the shuttle service. Which I did not like the attitude of. In conclusion, I'll probably never come back again.

  • 4/5 Silas 6 years ago on Google
Clean hostel. It can get really warm at times when they turn the AC off, but it can get cool enough at night to sleep comfortably. Only saw two people working here, one was very pleasant and helpful, the other one just made it seem like your presence in the hostel was an annoyance. I think if it wasn't for more pleasant of the two, this hostel wouldn't run nearly as well.

Nice hostel with a cool living room where you can get in touch with others. Everything was clean and I would recommend to stay there. Only the way to the restrooms/showers is not the best, because you have to go through the lobby/living room

Very friendly staff. Ask them anything about Singapore and they will tell you all about it. You don't need a tour guide. Just tell what you like to do and they will plan out everything for you. When it's time to go back, they will advise you the best time to go and the best way to go. I can have a piece of mind when I stay there.

The hostel was clean and organized. There is a nice common space. The staff was very wellcoming and helpful. I enjoyed my stay very much!

  • 3/5 Megan H. 4 years ago on Google
The staff are very friend and the showers and dorms are clean. You need a key to get in the main door, so it feels safe, but it only gets 3 stars from me because all of the lockers in my room could be opened with the same key, meaning anyone sleeping in the same room can open your locker. There are no options to use your own padlock either. So plan on keeping all your valuables on your person.
