A nice little walk (about 45 minutes) to make on a sunny day. Download the audio book ($1.20) beforehand so you can hear the stories behind the places you visit.

If you have time, walking the Black Heritage Trail is a great way to see Beacon Hill while seeing significant sites. This is a short walk compared to the Freedom Trail, since most of the sites are private residencies and you can't go inside.

I love the idea, but there are few historic plaques/markers and nearly all the buildings are private. There is very little tour literature. With a little bit of improvement, this could be a really good learning experience.

We took the NPS free tour with guide Dana Smith which started in front of State Capital and bronze statue of the 54th troop. It was about a two hour tour AND well worth it, actually one of the highlights of trip in Boston. We learned so much more about the 54th African American cavelry division and some personal stories as well; how a thriving free African American people came to live in the Beacon Hill district even though this was the hotbed of the white aristocracy Brahmans at the time; some historical sites but sadly not owned by original families or NPS; passing by John Kerry's house, passing through an original alley where blacks would run to avoid capture by the bounty hunters, and ending up at the African American museum on Joy St. Our guide was passionate about ensuring we got as close to possible to understanding the issues of the time, what a wealth of information he shared! This is not to be missed! I shed tears in this tour!

The Black heritage trail takes you on a historical walk through the rich history of African Americans in Boston. Best part of my trip.

Got a tour down this trail starting in the Commons on a school field trip. We had an absolutely amazing guide who answered questions people in my group hadl. It was conversational and educational. She had a binder put together to help explain, and show the information being given on the tour. I learned a lot about the history in the area and I highly recommend. The tour is a lot shorter than the actual trail in its entirety. But with the guide explaining the sites (which imo is the most important part), the trail takes around 90 minutes to walk and listen to.

Very interesting history and nice walk through a beautiful neighborhood. Cool to see one the first public schools for african americans in the country. Note the sights aren't all marked... finding them required some persistence and googling.

A wonderful adventure a touch off the beaten path. Unfortunately not as many tourists venture to this trail, but it is through a beautiful historic neighborhood in Beacon Hill. Every house you pass is gorgeous and dripping in history. The main stretch of shops through beacon hill is fantastic. I just wish the descriptions on the website were more in depth.

Very difficult to navigate without a guide, and without signage we were unsure what we were looking for or the history we wanted. We attempted this as an extension to the Freedom Trail, which is so well cared for its hard not to draw comparisons and wonder why this is not given equal attention.

We, family of 4 from Italy, made the tour this morning with a ranger called Gary. It was a beatiful experience; Gary was a great guide, we saw nice places in Beacon Hill and learnt many interesting information on American history and black people's key contribution.

The ranger that guided us was passionate and very well prepared, even if we were not able to fully appreciate all the details shared (we’re Italian and we don’t know so well all the details the american history), It was really touching and we had the unique opportunity to learn a bit more about the black history in Boston, and about all the people that fiercily fought for freedom and equality. You cannot miss that!

This Black Heritage Tour with NPS was the best tour we have been on during our stay in Boston. Very interesting, most informative and very detailed information. Would highly recommend the tour and follow up withe the museum at the meeting hall. Great experience.

As marvelous as the much better known Freedom Trail. Walk this too if you have the chance.

This is a separate walk much shorter than the Freedom Trail but it takes you round a lot of the back roads which are steep with cobbled sidewalks in the area that originally the free black citizens lived and worked

Great little walk through, but hard to spot at first. The scenery is beautiful and much needed historic gem for our city. As well for our country too!

Difficult to do bcause there are no signs for navigation. You do not know where to go and there is not much documentation abour the trail . The scenery is very nice and it`s a nice place to walk.
