Gregory was an influential Croatian bishop who lived in 10th century. HIstorians see him as a protector of Croatian identity and political interests, while artists perceive him as a symbol of patriotism and focus on his love for his homeland. There's a belief that rubbing his toe while saying a wish will actually make that wish happen. And that's why his thumb toe has a different colour than the rest of the statue. It's quite an interesting attraction to see, it is located just by the old town so you can include it in your Split itinerary.

Beautiful statue by great Ivan Mestrovic. And take a look at the golden finger which is touched by many tourists for luck. Location is nicely selected near entrance to Golden Gate or northern gate to palace of the Roman emperor Diocletian. Be prepared for very crowded place.

A monumental monument to Gregory of Nin inspired by the legendary Croatian sculptor Ivan Meštrović. Gregory was the bishop of Nin from Nin near Zadar, he reigned in the Dark Middle Ages, 900-929, an advocate of the vernacular script and liturgy as opposed to the Latin script and liturgy. When Tomislav declared himself the Croatian king, Grgur became chancellor of the royal court and headed the church. This fantastic monument is located right in front of the Golden Gate of Diocletian's Palace. There is a superstitious belief that whoever touches Gregory's big toe will be blessed with luck and prosperity

Large, modern statue of a medieval bishop of Split, and a famous Croatian national figure. The statue itself is only impressive due to its size and location, right on the doorstep of the Golden Gate that leads to the ancient Diocletian's palace. People like to rub the bishop's big toe for good luck.

Imposing statue situated on approach to the Zlatna Vrata (Golden Gates) of Split Old Town. Rubbing his big toe is believed to bring good luck.

Large and imposing statue just outside the citadel. It’s been told that if you rub the big toe it brings good luck, so we rubbed, buffed and polished that toe to the luster you see today. ✨

When touching the big toe of Gregory Ninski, you make a wish and the wish will come true. "The wish maker".

Heck yes, Split is the sh!t. Had a great time. One day is not enough and as of June with one cruise ship it got pretty busy. An early adventure will pay big dividends. This guy Gregory had a brass toe you need to touch and the city wall had Roman reenactment. Really great experience, if you want to learn more there are no shortages of guides. In fact there were several soliciting on the spot. Amazing how many shops and food options, no-line no-wait for almost anything. Several grocery markets and coin luggage storage at the train station for those traveling.

Really cool monument. Free to see, be careful on the steps if it's been raining as they are quite slippery especially with crowds navigating to the nearby gates. Worth seeing as part of the palace.

One of the must visit places in Split. The monument is huge. Crowded as well. It's believed that by touching the foot and wishing something, it will come true.

Gregory became an important figure for Croatians and is now regarded as a historical defender of Croatian culture, language, and statehood. Sculptures of him can be found in several towns and cities throughout the Balkan country. The city of Split is home to a particularly huge example, rising up to a height of 28 feet (8.5 meters), designed in 1929 by one of Croatia’s most important artists, Ivan Meštrović. This towering monument was first erected in the center of Diocletian’s Palace in Split, before being moved by occupying Italian forces in 1941 during World War II. Finally, in 1954, it was moved to its current location just outside the city’s Golden Gate.

Grgur Ninski was a 10th century bishop who is considered a revolutionary for opposing the rulings of the Roman Catholic Church. Considered a national hero, he is credited with having a major impact on the development of the Croatian language and nationality. Rubbing the big toe of his left foot is also believed to bring you good luck!
