It is a massive 20 feet high and 5 meter wide rock stands on a slippery slope of a hill on less than 4-feet base. It is called as Krishna's Butter Ball.🏀 According to Hindu mythology, when the great god Krishna was just a baby, he was fond of stealing butter. Following this tradition, the big orange stone has been likened to a giant dollop of purloined butter that the god dropped.

One of the most calm and serene places in Mahabalipuram. The area is vast, lots of rock carvings and formations. The spotlight being the butter ball which itself makes you wonder how it stays on a slope without falling. The surrounding lawns are well maintained. There are a lot of spots to sit and relax on top of the rock and it's windy there making it even better.

It's one of the nature's mistry. The massive stone standing on a sloped rock with minimum support at the base. Perfect example of super natural things in this world even the science cannot answer. For someone it looked like Krishna's butter ball. Nice thinking!! Must visit place for all ages. Nice place for selfies and photography!!!!!

Krishna's butter-ball is a natural monument. It is a gigantic granite boulder delicately balanced by nature on the slope of the hillock. The boulder is approximately 6 meters high and 5 meters wide and weighs around 250 tons. It stands on an approximately 1.2 meter base on the slope. Even though it is called as Krishna's butter-ball by local people, it has no relation with Lord Krishna. In the early 20 century an attempt has been made to remove it from its place to ensure the safety of the public. But they stopped that attempt. This is one of the place which got entry on the UNESCO's world heritage site.

Krishna's Butter Ball is a unique and intriguing natural rock formation located in Mahabalipuram, Tamil Nadu, India. The massive boulder, seemingly defying gravity as it precariously balances on a slope, is a popular tourist attraction. Visitors often marvel at the colossal size and peculiar shape of Krishna's Butter Ball. The site offers a picturesque setting, and the historical and cultural significance adds to its appeal. However, as it is primarily a natural wonder, the experience might be brief, and some visitors may desire more detailed information or additional amenities. In summary, Krishna's Butter Ball is a fascinating geological formation that captivates with its size and balance, making it a worthwhile stop for those interested in nature's wonders and historical sites.

The boulder is approximately 6 meters high and 5 meters wide and weighs around 250 tons. It seems to float and barely stand on a slope on top of 1.2-meter (4 ft) high plinth which is a naturally eroded hill, and is said to have been at the same place for 1200 years. A part of the boulder on top back has eroded away, making it look like a half-spherical rock from the back, while it looks round shaped from other three sides.

Krishna's Butter Ball is an enchanting natural wonder and a testament to the marvels of geology. This massive, seemingly precariously balanced rock has captured the imagination of visitors for centuries. The site is not only a geological anomaly but also a charming place to visit. The lush greenery surrounding the rock and the panoramic views of Mahabalipuram create a serene atmosphere. It's a popular spot for both tourists and locals, offering a unique photo opportunity and a sense of wonder.

It is a great mystery how this boulder stands without adequate support. It is usually a crowded place where many tourists take selfies here. The boulder would not budge even if pushed. A local tour guide named this place. Legend has that Krishna (a Hindu God) dropped a dollop of butter from the sky. This place could provide a better experience to tourists if the management constructs adequate parking space and restroom facilities.

Had a good experience there. Tickets are fairly priced for indians. One gets access to visit 3 places with one ticket. The views from the above was nothing great to see but the climbing part was beautiful. Also there were many vendors on the way of climbing who were selling fresh butter milk and other refreshments. That was really good during the journey.

I have been in Chennai for more than 10 years, but I never visited Mahabalipuram. Actually I planned multiple times to visit these historic places to explore and gain experience, but it took more than 10 years to come to this place. Unlike other tourist places, in Mahabalipuram we need to roam around to visit the different places. Earlier I thought of taking a single ticket to get a complete exploration, but the reality is totally different. When we reached/entered the bus stand we didn't know where to visit first and asked for parking. The local guy asked me to park the vehicle just opposite to the bus stand, later I came to know that the place was "Sea shore Temple". We parked our vehicle near that temple, and we first went to visit Krihna's butter ball place. Entrance fee was 40 rupees per head (below 15 years entry is free) and there was no extra cost for Camera. It was very hot Saturday afternoon, and the entire area was filled with hot sunlight. We slowly explored the places inside the premises. At the entrance, the great Krishan's butter ball welcomed us with its giant look. Right hand side we could see a rock temple which has a collection of sculptures and a few big trees. There was a wide grass lane where our kids could run and enjoy their time. We need to start exploring the place from the left side. We could see some bigger rocks and a few sculptures. Inside the premises, we can buy some snacks to settle down the heat, we bought some mangoes, cucumber, butter milk and water bottles. There was a museum located inside the campus, they charged 10 rupees again (but optional only), also to explore the lighthouse we needed to pay 10 rupees again. The terrible part is each time, we have to pay 20 rupees for DLSR cameras. Exploring light houses is up to the individual's own risk, the steps and the viewpoints are very dangerous. People who are keen on exploring the viewpoint along with kids please think twice before you step into the view point. We can exit after the lighthouse which leads to the way for five rathas mandapam. Overall its a good place to explore but personally I feel, this is not the place to explore during summer-it's very hot and we easily dehydrate very quickly.

It is a fantastic spectacle. The large rock is at the edge of another rock but it doesn't fall. It defies Gravity. However the visit should be made very early in the morning otherwise the scorching heat wouldn't allow to enjoy the beauty.

Monumental place on a historic site. Such a wonder that this huge rock stayed so long in its position truly a marvel. I don't know if it is naturally occurred or man made but it is truly astounding . You need atleast a day or two to explore the whole place. The on site direction should be improved cause locating one place to other is a bit tricky.

We visited on a weekend. It was fairly crowded. The place is amazing. It’s a mesmerising sight of art, history and architecture of Cholas and Pallavas. Several other historical temple structures, monuments and caves are also seen at this spot. You can view the entire place if you climb on the top of some of the rocks which are carved with steps. It requires around two hours to completely enjoy the place. The temperature is unbearable so it is advised to visit during early mornings and evenings. If you visit during the day, make sure to bring hats or umbrellas. There’s a private parking facility available. Ticket rate is 40 per person.

This is an unbeatable man made wonder setup around 6th century 👍🏻. The huge stone is safely positioned in the tip of the rock. Due to its safety concerns many kings during chola time made attempt to move the rock but failed. It is said inspired by this concept the famous “Tanajvur bommai” (dancing mud doll) was created later… Every during british rule in 1908, governor of Madras Mr.Aruthur Havelock made an attempt with Seven elephants 🐘 and no luck… its a privilege & honour to visit this ancient site

Architectural Marvel !! This place is a beauty of its own. You will be amazed by the architectural aspects of this. This has no relation to lord Krishna but it is just named as Krishna's butter ball. There is a big lawn in front of it where one can sit alone, with friends or family and spend some quality time. Summers can be bit harsh but winters and rainy seasons should do.

It’s a massive 20 feet high and 5 metre wide rock that stands on a slippery slope of a hill, which has a base of less than 4 ft. It’s popularly known as Krishna’s butterball as butter is believed to be Lord Krishna’s favourite food, and as per the myth, it falls from heaven. The position of the rock is so strange that you will be left wondering how it manages to stick there and not roll down the slope. Yet, it stands so still that visitors even take shade under it. It’s interesting to note that it even remained unmoved by any natural calamity like cyclones, Tsunami, or earthquakes. It is also believed that the rock is more than 1200 years old.

It is one of the heritage site in Mahabalipuram. Along with Krishna's butter ball there is a temple, caves and lot other scriptures to see. Weekend are little crowded particularly Sunday's. Holidays are more crowded. Car parking is just outside the site and considerably less parking. overall this heritage site is neatly maintained. Family with kids will enjoy this place. Entry ticket is must to visit this place. As the place is full of rocks prefer visiting this site either in morning or late evening.

It is termed as Lord Krishna butter ball. This is not as you move up towards light house, you can enjoy lot of Mahabharat references related to Pandavas & Dropati. Refer pics. At the top of this adventure you will find light house, where you can go and enjoy the view. Best be in shoes with good grip & wear comfortable clothes.

I’ve visited here with my friend, 40/- Rs tickets charges to see the stones and the entire area. A large rock perched precariously on a hillside, seemingly defying gravity + Other big rocks are there. Lots of crowd noticed on Sunday being weekends. With the same ticket you can visit a famous temple of Mahabalipuram and also able to visit beach. When you are going from Chennai to Puducherry or returning u must visit Mahabalipuram. Regards

Well. There is nothing much to see by paying money for tickets IMO. We can see some old constructions and temples. This was good. But, loved this tower. If we climb it up then the view will be awesome 👍 Must try this one.

  • 5/5 Darsan R. 10 months ago on Google
Awesome place to hang around. Under construction remains of temples just gives a feeling how much more man life's work left to complete a temple to be carved out of single stones. Generations of labour would have been taken. Place is well kept but still I could see people throwing plastic waste just like that like they don't care. Rocks are very slippery especially in rainy days so be careful

A scientific wonder! A place which makes you think how is the rock sitting on an inclined hill without rolling down? Scientists have tried using elephants to move the rock but the massive boulder refuses to move an inch. It's nothing a big wonder of science. A good place to visit once. The heat is scorching over there so you better come prepared for it. A hat and sunscreen is must. There's nothing more to see really. There are some temples and caves of some sort but nothing interesting. You can have fresh sugarcane or coconut juice to beat the heat after roaming around which you can find right outside.

Krishna's Butterball (also known as Vaan Irai Kal and Krishna's Gigantic Butterball) is a gigantic granite boulder resting on a short incline in the historical coastal resort town of Mamallapuram in Tamil Nadu state of India. The Pallava king Narasimhavarman (630–668 CE) also made a failed attempt to move the boulder. The Indian Tamil king Raja Raja Chola (985 and 1014 CE) was inspired by the balance of this massive stone boulder and it led to the creation of never-falling mud dolls called Tanjavur Bommai, which having a half-spherical base tends to come back to its original position every time one tries to make it fall.[citation needed] In 1908, then-governor of the city Arthur Havelock made an attempt to use seven elephants to move the boulder from its position due to safety concerns, but with no success.[citation needed] On October 12th 2019, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping took a photo in front of Krishna's Butterball holding hands during their second "informal summit.
