東京スカイツリーの真下にある、スカイツリータウンを構成する施設群のひとつで、東京ソラマチ等と合わせて存在する水族館。2020年7月16日にリニューアルオープンしたが、その当日たまたま会社が休みだったので訪れてみた。とはいえそもそもリニューアル前のすみだ水族館を訪れたことが無いので、以前はどんなもんだったかは分からず比較は出来ないと最初に断っておこう。
リニューアル当日とは言え平日である事、だいぶ気が緩んできたもののコロナ禍の最中だった事もあってか、そんなに混んでいなかったが入場制限というか入場時間指定のチケットを買わなければならないので、ネットで予約してソラマチ1階のファミマのファミポートからチケットを発券購入し入場。
さぁてすみだ水族館はどんなもんよと見て回ると、あれなんかちょっと地味だな。推しはクラゲとペンギンみたいだけど、クラゲってどこの水族館にもいるし、じゃあペンギンだとばかりにそちらを見てみると、確かに数はたくさんいるのだけど、何かやってくれる訳では無さそうでちょっと物足りない感じだ。特に案内なども無かったので多分何もやらないんだと思う。お散歩とかしてくれるといいんだけどな（ペンギンの歩く姿は可愛いからそれだけでも見たい）。それなら撮影に集中しようとするも館内が薄暗くてブレた写真を量産してしまいこれもイマイチ。館内は手狭な印象もあって展示も少なくなんだちょっとつまらないなと思っていたら、ありました見るべきものが。それはチンアナゴだ。
細長い魚でまだら模様に縞模様だったりとなんだかヘビの柄みたいだけど、体を砂にうずめてニョキニョキっと顔を出している姿は何とも愛嬌がある。しかもそれがみんな同じ方向に顔を出しているのは、水が流れてくる方向に顔を向けてエサが流れてくるのを待っているのだそう。この気忙しい世の中で、その悠長さというかなんとも言えぬユルさ加減が見てる者を和ませてくれるのだ。
ただ、そのチンアナゴだけでは少々物足りない感じはやはり否めない。小規模な施設ということを勘案しても何かもう一工夫欲しいところだ。
