Disrespectful to visitors on 5 December 2023. Permanent exhibition limited to only one small room with replicas. The rest of the museum is in preparation for the special exhibition Hokusai & Samurai starting 14 December 2023. I planned my trip to this museum. Consulting their official website beforehand, including the plan your visit part. Nowhere is there mention of the almost complete closure of the museum. Only upon arrival when buying your ticket do they inform you that only one small room with replicas is open. Since already there you expect the better of it. Within 30 minutes including a visit to the shop you are outside. What a shame not informing your visitors very clear on your website beforehand.

To be fair I expected a bit more from this museum. I love Japanese woodblock prints and I saw better exhibitions outside of Japan. Much of the exhibited prints are copies and museum is quite small. Nevertheless, it is interesting to visit. It would not be on the top on my list, but if you have more time- why not to see famous nikishi-e of Hokusai.

Visited here while on summer vacation in Tokyo and looking forward to seeing more Hokusai works on display. The museum is a short 10 min walk from the subway station and the architecture is distinctive. Main gallery is on 3rd/4th floor. Relatively small but very informative. Photography is not allowed. Well worth a visit.

This is the heaven for Hokusai fans. The museum is situated in modern designed building which has 5 floors including basement. There is a playground infront of the museum. The entry fee is 400Yen. Normally visitors can enjoy two exhibition floors 3rd and 4th but due to the preparation for upcoming exhibition- only 4th floor is open. The paintings in the museum are replicas of the original. There are touch screens which tell you the stories behind the paintings ( you can choose the languages- English / Chinese etc). Photos are allowed without flashes ( as per receptionist from the ticket counter). They have small gift shop near the entrance opposite to the ticket counter. It took me around 45 minutes to 1 hour to look through and taking pictures. The museum may not be for everyone but if you are Hokusai fans- this is must place to visit in Tokyo.

(Translated by Google) A short walk from the stations in both countries. It's a small museum, but it's pretty good. At the permanent exhibition, you can understand Hokusai well. A museum rather than a museum? Is more like ... You can learn a lot with the touch panel. You can play. There is a full-scale wax figure for Hokusai, and I'm afraid that it will move a little occasionally! You can see the fun of Hokusai. He was a really amazing person. A museum that you can enjoy slowly. There was a park next to it and many children were playing. Good, Sumida Ward. It may be a little difficult now that you can only move by elevator. (Now there are only two people in the elevator. To prevent crowding) It was a pity that I couldn't enter the library. I was able to use the JAF discount. Special exhibition 1200 yen → 960 yen (with a good deal) Permanent exhibition 400 yen → 320 yen Then put it in. It is a stub of the admission ticket, and it seems that there are other services as well.

We visited the museum on a cold Wednesday afternoon in early January. We bought the combined ticket to everything and I recommend you do this. The artwork is very accessible, they have and English translation avaliable if need, we didn't use it. The rules about photography could be clearer it said photography without flash was ok but some items had no photography signs by them, as slightly older people without glasses in a dim room we did not see the sign opps. The staff were gracious and welcoming. I recommend you reserve at least 2 hours minimum for this museum, if you like art. It is small but packed with information. The interactive displays were engaging and I should have spent more time on these. The exhibition descriptions in English are good and thought provoking. The shop is tiny, and quite pricey. They do have some affordable gifts / mementos to buy. Given the space they had on the museum it was a magnificent experience.

(Translated by Google) In the permanent exhibition, a reproduction of Katsushika Hokusai's work is on display. The space is not so large and the explanation is simple, so if you want to know about Hokusai easily, the permanent exhibition of 400 yen is just right. However, since they are all replicas, it may be better to call them museums rather than museums. The explanation on the touch panel seems to be on sale, but I was worried that there was no disinfectant. It is difficult to walk a little from Ryogoku station, but I think it is a good facility as a whole. The shop was also substantial.

Excellent exhibition with good English descriptions for the usual exhibits. Don't forget to visit the library as well. Very friendly English speaking staff at the library who could help you photocopy photos you like for a nominal fee - a much cheaper alternative than buying colour prints.

The museum isn’t very big, so don’t expect too much from it. However, the expositions and materials are interesting and exhibited in an historical, explanatory way. Two tips: buy the permanent + seasonal exhibitions ticket. It’s only additional 100 yen and you’ll get to see almost the double (the permanent exhibition isn’t big at all). Also, they give you 20% off if you go on your birthday’s month, which is cool too.

Great museum worth the entry fee. Definitely note the two different fees it's about 1000 yen for the full exhibit and 400 yen for the permanent exhibit. It's a good 1hrs worth of time at a casual pace reading through the details. You can speed through too if you want. See if you can catch Hokusai move in the exhibit They have a gift shop that shows alot of his work. It can get a little expensive but some of the materials can be a nice gift for any fan of the art.

There was no queue for buying ticket (maybe because Japan has just opened to tourists) and the museum, in the era of covid was well equipped for visitors. Great exhibition of Hokusai's work and life. Definitely worth it for those who enjoy his genre of art or just Japanese art in general. Ninety minutes is enough to spend there and you can also see Skytree through one of the windows.

A really interesting exhibition all about Hokusai's history as an artist. The entry for the museum is 700 yen for the permanent exhibit or 1000 which includes the temporary exhibit as well. Interestingly you get a discount if it's your birthday month! The exhibits are across two floors and I spent about 2 hours looking across everything. The exhibitions were very interactive with touch screens, videos and even games and opportunities to draw on some of the tablets in Hokusai's style. It was a great balance of technology with the history of Hokusai's art I learnt a lot about not only his wood block art but also his sketches and other art works which I hadn't heard of before as well as a comprehensive overview of his influence in Japan, where he'd lived, his family life and his life alongside the art. Overall, well worth a visit for the price and you can easily spend 2-3 hours here going around and exploring. I went at about 3pm and it wasn't too busy. Some of the rooms were a bit light on English translations but this didn't detract from the experience - highly recommend if you're a fan of any of Hokusai's work!

Came to see arts of Hokusai. Was not disappointed even if a lot of the art weren't present, or were replicas. Main positive was that there was lot of English notes and English interactive displays. There's also a replica of a room with life-like statues of Hokusai and his daughter Oi.

The museum is small, but brand new. You can consider it for a quick visit during a tour of the Asakusa area. The museum collection is thoroughly described in English through panels and interactive screens, which is pleasant and surprising since most exhibits here in Japan don't have any kind of explanation (be it in Japanese or in other languages). The main room is very dimly lighted, but I suppose this is to preserve the artworks. I really enjoyed the exhibit of a contemporary artist who parodied Hokusai, but I wasn't expecting it to take up so much space compared to the actual size of the collection.

Beautiful museum, beautiful building. The museum walks you through Hokusai’s life and different art projects. Each display centers on a period of Hokusai’s life (70-95 years-old, for example) and gives info on the art style used during that time and different influences, including schools of art, groups of artists. Each area is accompanied by electronic displays you can look through different prints and zoom in using hand gestures. The museum is rather small, so don’t expect much volume. Take your time and go through things slowly and you’ll have a good experience.

Small museum but items well displayed, nice small shop and unusually building design which provides some views of Sky Tree. Interior of building light and airy which also provides a calm atmosphere. Only giving this 4/5 stars because price felt a little high given the size and number of items on display. Other than that feel it is well worth a visit and an easy walk from Ryogoku Station

Like others have mentioned it’s not a big museum but you would def have more than enough to see if you go through everything of their permanent exhibit in details and use the interactive touch panel. Main piece at the current special exhibit is a replica but I think it’s still a good exhibit with the interesting story behind it.

Sumida Hokusai Museum isn't in my itinerary plan, but when I stroll around Sumida, the museum had its special exhibition. Then I decided to visit. I bought two tickets for permanent and special exhibition for 1000 Yen. If you want to visit the permanent exhibition only, you only pay 600 Yen. You can't take a photo or video or even sketch the painting in the special exhibition. But, you can take a photo in the permanent exhibition area. Check out the merchandise shop too! You definitely want to buy all of the merch. Trust me. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

The Architecture is stunning and interior is also related that the visitors can enjoy the exhibition without interuption from the public playground outside. The exhibition itself is also interesting that it shows how the printed-picture is from the original. You can also available to see the other sketches and Sumida's artwork.

If you’re a fan of Katsushika Hokusai in particular or Ukiyoe art form generally, you will absolutely cherish your time inside this relatively new museum of art. This museum first opened in Tokyo’s Sumida District in November 2016, so the both building and the surrounding facilities are in spectacular condition. As Hokusai was both born and raised in Sumida-ku, there’s a tremendous level of local pride in his celebrity. You fell that sense of pride in the dedication of the museum staff, who seem to derive a great deal of pleasure introducing you to the works of their local hero. The museum can get pretty crowded in the afternoons, so I recommend visiting in the morning, perhaps before enjoying a river cruise from the nearby terminal.

No photos allowed in the museum and most of the works here are high resolution replicas which was a bit disappointing but still a great visit. I learned a lot about the different styles of Hokusai. Only 2 floors of art ranging in majority small to medium size pieces for the current exhibition. The gift shop has a lot of beautiful souvenirs that makes the visit alone worth it.

(Translated by Google) It's a very difficult place to evaluate... I think it is a wonderful exhibit. At the permanent exhibitions, I try to keep my tired passages organized by keeping a tempo summary of my lifelong route. Also, although it is a duplicate, I never expected that I could read Hokusai Manga from Volume 1 to Volume 15. Unfortunately the structure of the building isn't it? A small elevator is the main movement on the floor. The lobby on each floor is also small, and there are few chairs that can be used for breaks, including the exhibition room. In the first place, do you anticipate that the number of users will not increase so much...

(Translated by Google) It is a museum that I didn't want to visit anymore. The building looks good, and maybe the rating had changed if this facility wasn't a museum. Is it designed by a person who has never visited the museum, such as the location of the toilet and the exhibition method, because of the difficulty in the flow line? There are some inconveniences. The hospitality of the staff was also the lowest level of any museum I have ever visited. This museum is not recommended for those who have visited various museums. Really well designed museum. Great architecture by itself, photographic everywhere. The Hokusai introduction is very comprehensive, easy to understand, and incorporates a lot of modern photos of where he lived and what is happening in the world and in Japan that may have influenced his work. It is extremely interesting for beginners into the Hokusai world. The basic zone entry is only 400yen and with special exhibition (his more rare work) is 1200yen. For first-timer just basic ticket is plenty to see for about 1.5-2.0 hours. Photos allowed except for those explicitly marked otherwise.

The Hokusai Museum is of course a must visit if you’re a fan of the legendary Hokusai. While there are some inspirational works of art I hadn’t seen elsewhere, I was disappointed that the information for the art on display lacked some of the fantastic backstory behind the different works of art. Still, if you love Hokusai’s works you really should pay this museum a visit.

(Translated by Google) It is called a museum where the works of Katsushika Hokusai are exhibited, but it is closer to the standing position of a museum that follows the trajectory of the person and style of "Katsushika Hokusai". You may be disappointed when you imagine a gorgeous museum where the works of Katsushika Hokusai are gathered together. All of the ukiyo-e on display are duplicates, and most of the works can be photographed (for personal enjoyment) (however, the use of the flash function is prohibited). The explanations for each exhibition are always written in English, so foreign tourists can enjoy it. Since the elevator is the only way to get to and from the exhibition room, even people with disabilities can enjoy it. The room of the permanent exhibition is not so large, and you can go around in about 30 minutes. If it's only a permanent exhibition, it costs 400 yen, but it may feel a little unsatisfactory. If you want to know more about Ukiyo-e and Katsushika Hokusai, you should use it when a special exhibition is being held. A place for Hokusai FC, the museum is located at Sumida City, closed to Ryogoku Station. The building of the museum looks modern with some storytelling. They features permanent exhibition, that you can learn about the life and work of Hokusai, and the the special exhibition, which was under the bird theme during the time of our arrival. The collections are quite limited, and most of them are replicas ( probably all of them). It is not allowed to take pictures in the exhibition areas. By the way, there is a museum shop that you can buy a real handcraft woodblock prints, which serves as an impressive souvenir.

Great museum! The entry is cheap and the explanations of the exhibition are great, and most importantly, available in english, which hasm't been the case in other many museums. There was an AR explanation of some of the hokusai artworks that was great.

A great architectural building. With odds angle and layout. Didn't go into the exhibits, but just the ground floor. One of the finer techno architecture and very clean design.

I don't like that they're shady with the prices. After consulting the website I expected to pay 400 Yen, however that only would've given me access to one room of 4(?). Of course I wanted to see the whole exhibition so I ended up paying 900 Yen (with student discount). I found the lighting in the rooms too dark and the decoration half-hearted, since there were many posters with information attached with sticky tape. Nevertheless the architecture of the building is great and it's still Hokusai so three stars.

A very nice art Museum with historical linage to Japan's rich illustratious history... Knowing that it was the house of creator of history's one of the famous painting i.e. Popularly known as "The Japanese Waves" was a nice feeling.

400yen for access to the permanent exhibit, housed in one room. Everything else is extra in Special Exhibitions. You probably need to consider this place for a quick stop on a visit to Tokyo, so worth a visit, but you'll learn more online than you likely will here.

The museum building itself is lovely. Inside the exhibits are on the two upper floors. You could rush through it in an hour, taking a look at Hokusai's more significant works, but if you're interested in Hokusai I'd recommend about 2 hours.

However, the exhibition room is a little small, and is at the level of the local museum. It's easy to go there from subway station, it takes just around 5 minutes. You may be surprised that the building is so small in contrast to Hokusai's big name. It's bit difficult to find its entrance because the building shape and design is disgusting. You can enjoy Hokusai's master pieces as much as you want. They have a small but nice souvenir shop on the ground level. You can see and buy various types of books which are written in Japanese or English, stationary goods, post cards, and many other attractive stuff without buying entrance ticket. There is no cafeteria in the museum. If you want to have a break while you see master pieces of Hokusai, you can ask staff that you are going to have a coffee outside. Don't forget to ask where are good restaurants near the museum. It may be difficult to find proper place around there.

Most of the regular exhibition allows photos but no flash photography, some of the wall scrolls don't allow photos. Lots of beautiful ukiyo-e is featured here including The Great Wave off Kanagawa and Fuji on a Clear Day. There's an interactive part with some fun games, and an animatronic display of Hokusai in his home. The gift shop is awesome too.

Nice museum of Hokusai in Ryogoku, about a 5 to 8min walk from the train station. It's a little ways out from touristy parts of Tokyo so may not be on everyone's radar. If you're into art and Japanese culture, this is a must-see. They'll have a special exhibit that changes from time to time and a permanent exhibit showcasing his work and the work from his students. 1,000 JPY to see all exhibits. Small museum but interesting. The gift shop is pretty good too where they sell prints using the same authentic processes that he created and range from 14,000 to 30,000.

This is a small but mighty museum! I thoroughly enjoy Hokusai's wood prints and sketch works so I found this experience to be thoroughly enjoyable. The permanent exhibit has videos in a number of languages that guide you through Hokusai's process and many interactive information panels as well. Their tablet-based displays gave an immersive taste for how he made his one-stroke drawings. The past special exhibition was also incredibly enjoyable as they had recreated some of his sketchbooks for you to hold and touch. Being able to get so close to the works in this way have ensure that I will return to see other future exhibits!

If you know "The wave off Kanagawa" with a view of Mt Fuji. Then you know Hokusai! A wonderful way to get out of the bustle of Tokyo and get to know the neighborhood of Sumida. Sadly no photos in the museum but it was a delight to see all the sketches and art of the elusive personality of a prolific artist. HE LIVED TO AGE 90! He also changed his name as often as his art style.

Absolutely loved the collection of Hokusai's work and the history of Japanese art in that period. I did not realise that so much of Hokusai's art was focused around humour and the sheer scale of his work over the 70-80 years that he was active. Obviously, seeing the Great Wave was amazing but also the 7 metre long painting that he made. A lot of his most famous works were not actually the originals but rather recreations because the originals were being conserved.

  • 5/5 Angel de L. 6 months ago on Google

The museum is kind of small and shows drawings of Sumida Hokusai. The main attraction is the wave of Kanagawa painting which can only be seen in the special exhibition. The wave painting is quite small and there were multiple other paintings that looked more interesting which can be seen in the permanent exhibition. No photography of the art was allowed.
