Sobremesa is a "must try" restaurant located in the heart of Antigua Guatemala. The food is absolutely delicious, the service is top-notch, and the atmosphere is inviting. The owner, who is also the chef, is a talented painter and author of 20 novels. He is also a very welcoming and gracious host. He made sure that we had everything we needed and went out of his way to make us have a fantastic time. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a delicious meal, excellent service, and a memorable dining experience. We went for lunch and had Pasta fettuccine with salmon, along with a Caprese salad Both dishes were cooked to perfection and were incredibly flavorful. The salad was the best Caprese salad I've ever had! Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

This place is an absolute GEM. One of my favorite restaurants in Antigua, I went twice in the few weeks I visited and wish I had time to go back more. The menu is so unique, each dish I got had incredible flavors, the ambiance in the restaurant and rooftop were beautiful, and the ICE CREAM... truly some of the best ice cream I've ever had. Must try the blueberry lavender and cookie dough flavors if they have it available. Can't wait to visit again soon!

I ordered this via Uber Eats and was pleasantly surprised when it arrived. Highly recommend the sobremesa pizza which is pesto, mozzarella, balsamic caramelized purple onions, garlic mushrooms, & prosciutto as well as the steak panino which has steak, avocado dressing, tomatoes, mozzarella, and sauteed onions. Both of these were simply remarkable and I highly recommend ordering them!

The menu is quit good, well combined and when you read it, you really want to try everything. The place is cozy & beautiful, and service is outstanding. Few of ingredients were really good like the pesto on the tomato, or part of the cheese on the pizza. It does not get the 5 star because I missed the spark, 💥 in my mouth. We had pizza and both steaks, the one with spinach and the one with wine reduction. The pizza was really simple, bread a bit dry to me. The steaks were good but that is it. Side dishes not really amusing. if you are big eater, order an entree to share.

This is a Great place.. I love it. I had the most delicious lunch there. Alan, took the time to help me find a vegan option for me to enjoy while he brought me a phone charger when he noticed my phone was dying..he also suggested that yummy desert with ice cream..I couldn't ask for anything more for my last meal in Antigua. His help, his sense of humor and his high quality service will make me definitely go to this place everytime I visit Antiua. Thank you so much Alan and staff.

Lovely food, the place is like being on the jungle. Really really recommendable. I got to try some of their "exotic ice cream", I can assure it's one of the best I've tried so far. Try Sweet Potato Pie.

Service was great and it deserves 5 stars. The food however, was below average (way overrated as stated on the reviews). We had to return the pasta dishes because the pasta was overcooked and the sauce was very cream heavy, not what you will expect from a place that brands itself as modern italian. They were nice and let us order again. After a disappointing pasta, we played it safe and order two sandwiches, which were ok. I can't comment on the rest of the food but in our experience, the prices are high and the quality not so great, perhaps close to a standard italian-american place (not proper Italian).

Hands down one of the most amazing places I have ever been. It is ptobably the best meal I have ever had. Alex, the owner is incredible. An artist, author and restaurateur, what a phenomenal place. Food was incredible. Very highly recommend to anyone in Antigua or anywhere close in Guatemala. Well worth the trip. So very happy that I had the opportunity to try this place out.

Sobremesa is simply amazing, it is a must if you visit Antigua Guatemala.... everything about this place it is just great, location, the restaurant atmosphere, service and definitely food x5⭐️. We had Ratatouille(missed to the picture) Linguini Piccata with salmon, pizza sobremesa, and to close an affogato and ice-cream... all perfect👌🏾 Looking forward for our next visit!

We love this restaurant and the service! Be sure to save room for dessert! It's all delicious and unique. The atmosphere is beautiful as well. I recommend this restaurant. Just know, it's on the expensive side.

Sobremesa seemed promising with a 4.6 star review. We were excited to have some good italian food (pasta & pizza). However, it was quite a disappointment. The quality of the pizza dough was underaverage (seemed like frozen pizza from the supermarket). The drinks were watery and the overall freshness of the food was not given. Sadly, this place is overrated and overpriced. Be aware. I do have to say that the location is cute and romantic. The service was ok.

VERY tasty and creative food. Met the owner who clearly loves his restaurant. I enjoyed a Sangria with my chicken-plantain specialty dish and finished with what I decribe as a banana split with rum. Exquisite! great place for a cozy date with your special person, or a nice quiet discussion with a friend.

Beautiful rooftop and lovely staff. Loved the icecream (got the mulled wine and the carrot cake flavours!) and the hibiscus margarita!

After weeks travelling around, we have tasted some wonderful food but this has got to be our favourite restaurant with brilliant mains, deserts & Cocktails. We were recommended Sobremesa by some friends and came here on our last two nights in Guatemala!! The Unicorn Steak is the best steak I've ever tried! The creativity in each of the dishes is incredible, unexpected and we were always left pleasantly surprised. The staff and the owner are super friendly and beautiful interior design with loads of stunning plants. This place is a must visit!

I ordered the linguine piccata with salmon, and it is cooked absolutely perfectly. I am so happy! I had to ask for bread, and the garlic bread is delicious. I noticed the man next to me was asked if he wanted bread. I highly recommend the food here. I’m sitting in a very cute patio in the back. It’s right off the main plaza, so great location. Edit: I went back for a second night, and everyone was fabulous. I am upping my service review. I brought some friends and we all enjoyed our meals and desserts were delicious.

A must do. This is an experience you will not forget. The owner, Alex, is an accomplished artist and author whose eclectic works hang in the restaurant. Don't try to figure out the menu... Just be brave and dive in. Be sure to meet Alex who speaks Spanish and English. A new patio with views of the volcanos and the surrounding area is now open. If you have time to spare this is the place to settle in and enjoy...ask about the ice cream....🤣

I’ve been living in Antigua for years and have always heard that I️ NEED to go to Sobremesa. My husband has gone to dinners with coworkers and raved about the steak he got multiple times. I️ have been to the exotic ice cream location and it was well worth it. This time a friend and I️ were out late looking for a good cheese plate, we were met by a delicious antipasto that they substituted mushrooms and olives for an extra slice of cheese. The servers automatically spoke English to us and were very accommodating, which was great for my friend who was just visiting for a few weeks. Our entrees were exactly what we were looking for and masterfully crafted. The entrees each came with an accompanying starter which was a nice surprise. We even ordered a pizza to go for my husband who said it was one of the best he’s ever had, even reheated the next day. The owner came over to check if everything was okay, he was a true conversationalist and we were charmed by him. When he heard that my birthday was the following day he treated us to an amazing piece of carrot cake, thank you John! I️ can’t wait to come back with my husband. One thing I️ thought was interesting is that the menu asks to keep children to your table. This is not the type of place I️ would think to bring my son, but I thought it a clever way to deter people from bringing their children and to set a relaxed atmosphere expectation.

Best ever Italian food we had. Dishes were so well crafted with options for Vegetarians. Best thing was it felt so light on tummy and no dish was overly loaded with cheese ( usual for Italian food I have had before). Desert was amazing. Loved the atmosphere. Highly recommend this place.

Nice terrace restaurant. Food was fine and good but not great. Their speciality I'd say and where they shine is their desserts. I'd go just for the unusual ice creams and their amazing desserts!

Amazing place. Not only is it beautiful and relaxing (I was there for lunch and ate outside amongst the lovely flora), but the food is DELISH! Cocktails are so good too (I had a hibiscus margarita- yum!). The staff and owner are beyond nice. I also saw the owner giving out sandwiches to the homeless around the Central Park that night. He is SO kind— cannot recommend this place enough.

Food was delicious. Great flavor, service was really nice. Icecream is amazing.

Nice and cozy little place to eat. The place came up in my vegetarian list of restaurants in the area however it's not necessarily one. They can modify most options into a vegetarian one, tough. It's definitely pricier than comparable vegan or vegetarian options in the area. Their lemonade is definitely not on par with the rest of the menu. Overall a good meal.

Very good! If I go again and try other things, it may turn into 5 stars. The "Te Frio" which I ordered con tomillo (with thyme) was unexpectedly sweet; menu didn't mention sugar. I don't care for sweetened tea and like to pace my sugar intake. The Ginger Guava Chicken was wonderful. Incredibly moist and flavorful chicken even without the sauce. Sauce was fairly good, maybe too sweet (guava is of course sweet, I just didn't expect the overall effect to be quite so sweet in a savory dish). Served with green beans and roast potatoes. I saved room for the Pecado Split! Sauteed banana with a scoop of coffee rum walnut ice cream and another of tobacco rum fig ice cream, all doused with a rummy caramel sauce. The dish arrived with the tobacco ice cream almost completely melted. The flavor was delicious, but I wish the ice cream and hot bananas had been brought together at the last possible moment just before I got it. Also, the plating of this dish is a bit unfortunate. It looked gloppy and sad, which is too bad since it did taste so good. Much of interest on the menu; I hope to go again while I'm in Antigua!

We went to this restaurant based on positive reviews from The New York Times! Honestly, what are the NYT and associated blogs on about? This restaurant does not deserve a positive rating in our view. We ordered the Tomato and Mushroom soup and in both we could taste the chlorine of the water used. The pasta’s we ordered tasted bland without a hint of effort or inspiration! On a more positive note the waiters were very nice!

This is not the best, most creative restaurant in Antigua. It’s the best, most creative restaurant in the world. 😆I have been to 41 countries and this is my favorite restaurant I’ve ever been to. We come back every year! The food and drinks are creative, unique, delicious, and fairly priced. I have literal dreams about the hibiscus Margarita! And the banana jalapeño chicken is amazing. I’ve tried many different things on the menu and have been pleased with every choice. A must try in Antigua!

The food was once again spectacular. I have come many times here and they have never let me down (and my expectations for Sobremesa are always very high). Last night I had desserts (tasted all of them) and they were delicious, my favorite was the Banana bread with Ron Zacapa -the finest rum in the world. The service was, as always, remarkably joyful and attentive. The owner continues to make me and whoever enters the room feel they’ve just stepped into a different dimension filled with cool stories, daring and exquisite flavors, and breathtaking art work. Definitely a must visit place in Antigua Guatemala.

This was the last restaurant my sister and I visited during our 3-week stay in Antigua and definitely the best. I wish we had discovered it sooner. Italian food with a Latin American flare. Amazing cocktails, good pasta, and tender, perfectly cooked steak.

Indescribably amazing. Stop here and eat or drink anything, you will not be disappointed. Unbelievable. Some things change and some things don't. We have been visiting Antigua annually since 2017. Alex Ferrar - chef, author, painter, owner and gastronomic expert always welcomes and impresses. He never tires of explaining the amazing flavors on the menu. We would come here weekly if we lived here. Do not miss it. One of a kind.

After two weeks in Antigua, this was one of the best (if not the best) restaurant I found. The servers (especially Mario) were amazingly friendly and on it. The pizza had a great crispy crust, and the other dishes were fresh and well executed. They also had an amazing dessert menu, of which I want to go by and try more. Def worth a visit if I’m Antigua.

Third time here, food has always been amazing and unique. The horchata is the best Ive ever had and the Sobremesa pizza is incredible with the figs! Beautiful atmosphere and now has a rooftop area.

My partner and I had a really lovely evening here. I had one of the best margaritas I’ve ever had which was the jalapeño margarita - highly recommend getting this if you’re wanting a cocktail! The staff were amazingly friendly and the owner even came out to say hey.

This place is excellent - the menu is inventive and intelligent, with ingredients that really work together no matter how unusual they may sound. The jalepeno banana chicken is exquisite, and the pumpkin cheesecake with Cognac ice cream and caramelised apple slices was superp. I chatted to the owner abouth the food and the practcalities, and it;s all scrupulously clean and fresh. It's not cheap, by my goodness, it's special! The service is also excellent and the atmosphere is relaxing - it's a real find!

Good food presented by a great presenter, followed by creative desserts. The food itself is not so great. It could be because we ordered not so crazy mix of flavors which seems like specialty of chef owner Alexander. If I go back, I will definitely try something that sounds weird in order to help my opinion improve. However, the desserts and ice cream mixes are so wonderfully creative, reflecting what the chef owner enjoys; mixing weird flavors and creating something beautiful out of them. Chef owner is also a painter and shared with us stories behind a few of his arts, and how he actually created them. It is beautiful to hear those stories and learn some of the cultural details. Will definitely recommend because of stories, and desserts.

Friendly staff, nice salad and cheesecake but the pizza was a huge disappointment. Updated after a cordial communication with the restaurant: I agree there are different style of pizza, I guess this one is not my favourite.

Wow. Super tasty food, great ambience and friendly staff. We had the steak, sobremesa pizza, and brioche dessert. All the flavours were enjoyable and unique. The whole menu looks great and I would come back for sure to try more!

Enjoyed the experience here. 5 stars for the creativity of the food and the service. The blackberry chipotle reduction was a great complement to the steak and the ratatouille was very flavorful with an original presentation. Ice creams are excellent. -1 star because the beef tenderloin was not very tender.

  • 5/5 Michael R. 2 years ago on Google
This small but busy establishment is a not to miss stop in Antigua. The food is great (I had beef tenderloin with a mildly spicy blackberry sauce). Some of the paintings are done by the owner, who is incredibly creative - creates meals, drinks, paints and writes. He is very talented and a lot of fun to talk to. He talked with us to tell us about the paintings he had created. Also take time to say hello to his very cute dog!

I have eaten at Sobremesa a few times when passing through Antigua. It has always been wonderful. I had the Crostini followed by the Ginger Guava chicken breast. All was delicious and the service was great as well. Thanks once again to Alex and his staff!
