三方を海に囲まれた庵治半島は古くから漁業や海運で栄え恵みに感謝し航海の安全を祈る為、神々を祀っていたと思われます。当社もこの一つの社に間違いないでしょう。
庵治町内には承和七年(840年)に一郷一八幡として誉田天皇外三神を勧請した古社櫻八幡神社があります。その境外摂社であります当社は全国的にも珍しい宇遅能和紀郎子が御祭神です。宇遅能和紀郎子は応神天皇の皇子、仁徳天皇の異母弟にあたり仁徳天皇と皇位継承を譲りあった伝説がある皇子です。
当社の創建年代は不詳ですが、元和六年(1620年)に再興されました。
その後天和元年(1681年)に高松初代藩主松平頼重公の命により、江の浦海岸に有った社を背後の山である御殿山の中腹に移転再建されました。社殿の規模は昭和二十年二月の改修工事で現在の規模に成りました。名称については元々「皇子権現」のようでしたが、いつ頃からか「皇子神社」に成ったようです。
境内末社として拝殿東側に金刀比羅神社、西側には神明神社(お伊勢さん)と長田神社(えびすさん)が祀られています。
映画のロケ(世界の中心で愛を叫ぶ)で有名に成った境内からは庵治漁港と山々、五剣山、湾を向こうに屋島が一望出来、大変風光明媚な景色を見ることが出来ます。
また全国的にも数少ない海の祭りとして知られる庵治皇子神社の夏祭り、江戸時代から続く「庵治の船祭り」は旧暦の六月十四、十五日の満月に近い金、土曜日に繰り広げられています。提灯で明々と照らされた漁船にお神輿や地車、獅子が乗り船団を連ねて海を渡り御旅所に行く勇壮な「船渡御」で有名な神社でもあります。見所が多い神社ですので御参拝下さい。
