四国本土最北端である竹居観音岬は当寺の境内に有ります。
竹居観音寺本堂から海沿いの参道を進んだ奥には奥の院に当たる岩窟(いわや)があり、生駒親正公が天正十六年(1588年)に高松城(玉藻城)築城にあたり城の鬼門(北東)の守り神として石窟の奥に馬頭観世音菩薩を祀りました。また生駒騒動後に高松に入った松平頼重公が寛永年間にここに勢至菩薩と十一面観世音菩薩を併せ祀りました。
また、普通は寺院の本堂は南か東向きですが鬼門封じの寺院ですから珍しい北向きの本堂に成っています。
生駒公が開基する前から石窟は存在し修行の場としていたと考えられますが記録がなく詳細は不明ですが現在でいうパワースポットとして知られていたと思われます。
また竹居観音寺は四国八十八ヶ所霊場第八十五番札所八栗寺の奥の院でありますのでお遍路さんや江戸時代から高松市民、近隣の方々に「庵治の観音さん」と呼ばれ風光明媚な景色を含め親しまれ参詣してきた寺院です。
