The rooms are beautiful, well equipped, the location is perfect, but we came during the summer and there's no AC inside, which is unbearable with summers Japan have. We avoided staying in our nice room as much as possible because of this. The kids loved the underground tunnel and the shared livingroom, and we liked the garden view, but it's 10 pm right now and I can't wait until we leave tomorrow morning..so hot...

The room I stayed was a beautifully kept traditional Japanese style room with a view of the garden. The whole temple was clean, neat, quiet and welcoming, and the amenity was modern and convenient. The morning prayers, Shakyo (writing meditation?) and the meditation I participated made me feel peaceful and refreshed!

We had an amazing stay - highly recommend! A great balance between traditional temple style with all the necessities of a hotel. Our room was nice and warm despite the cold winter outside due to the powerful heater and warm bedding. We stayed in a traditional temple room with a shared bathroom and living space which was surprisingly easy to use. I would also highly recommend the morning meditation - very interesting and peaceful! Overall great place to stay when you are visiting Takayama.

Highly recommend! We stayed for 3 nights. The rooms were clean, the beds comfortable and the bathroom even had a washing mashine +dryer! Everything is situated within walking distance. What made our stay special was Kaiji-san, who made us feel welcomed right from the start. We arrived quite early before check-in time and it was no problem to leave our luggage at the temple while exploring Takayama. Same on our last day. We booked almost a year back and back then breakfast was still offered (which I booked). They don't offer it anymore, but when they learned I had already paid for it, they went out of their way to provide us with a delicious breakfast! What an amazing hospitality! Oh, and definitely attend the buddhist morning prayer, it's worth getting up early ;-)

What a special way to start 2023! We stayed at zenko-ji for 3 nights and it was such an amazing experience. Kaiji (the host) was very accommodating and welcoming. He was always quick to reply to emails with questions. My partner and I stayed in the flower room, we had our own bathroom, washing machine and absolutely beautiful garden view where we watched the snow fall during the day. The room was very clean and we had all the essentials of a hotel. Although it was freezing outside, the room had heating and heated blankets so we were very comfortable. There was a shared living area and kitchen that had all the essential utensils and was very clean! Would definitely recommend braving the cold mornings and waking up for the prayer session, it was a beautiful experience and Kaiji was very inclusive of guests during the session. Overall it was a beautiful stay and we are sad to leave, would highly recommend this stay!

This was such a special experience! Highly recommend you stay at this temple - Kaiji was an amazing host with so much knowledge and was so friendly, he guided us through the morning prayer and gave us great information / a history lesson on the temple, Buddhism, and Takayama as a town. It’s close to everything, and the room was stunning!! The temple was so beautiful, we’ll remember this stay forever!

We stayed just one night, but it was great choice. Location is good. Everything was clean and nice. One thing what i would mention, our room was facing to the street, so it was noisy for us, and room was cold.

It was a wonderful experience. If you come to visit Japan, you had better stay this hotel. You will be able to have very good time with Buddhism in Japan. I strongly recommend.

This is a really unique place and totally worth the price! It was my first time staying at a temple and it was amazing! Staff was super friendly and helpful too, I would love to stay there again

Great temple guest house (think it formally was a hostel that has been recently renovated). Only downside is when the temperature drops it gets very cold inside. Duvets and blankets were great but made it hard to get out of bed!

Great place to stay and enjoy the japanese culture! Our room was a little bit noisy and to bright in the morning, but I guess this is the price you pay for staying in such a great and traditional place. The shared bathroom was beautiful, and the reservation system for using the tub worked fine.

Temple Hotel Zenkoji was so much more than I could have ever expected. The staff were super attentive & welcoming, the location was central & extremely walkable, and the experience of staying inside a buddhist temple cannot be matched! Having a kitchen and private soaking tub was an added bonus. The monk that was staying for a few days even led a ceremony, and there are more activities within the hotel itself. I woke up every morning in disbelief where I was. While I've been to Japan many times, this was one of the most memorable experiences.

The place surpassed our expectations. We stayed for 2 nights and chose the room with en-suite bathroom. The building is part of an old temple but as you go inside you can't tell that you're inside of an old structure. The room was well equiped, well kept, and very convenient. The futton bed was comfortable and the heater kept the temperature warm. The room is next to a mini garden that was very beautiful and serene. The monk and the staff were very friendly and they make you feel at home. Location wise, it's so great because it's ~10 mins walk to the train station and Miyagawa market. It's near good restaurants. Convenience store is also 3 mins away. Right across the street there's a great curry restaurant also. Overall it was a memorable stay.

Different and unique experience. At least for westers. Very pleasant welcome and hosting. I joined a morning service and heard a little about Buddhism and the meaning of the mantras.

Lovely little temple hotel (more a hotel with a temple area than a working temple experience like in Koyasan). Excellent location, clean comfortable rooms. Sadly the priest was away when we were there so we didn’t get to experience morning prayers. We took a 3-person family superior room with en suite shower. There was a shared bathroom if you wanted to take a bath
