Perfect place to visit. Important history lesson and great guide with interesting stories. Bonus is view from top to Tallinn. Recommend to go at 16:00 to see sunset and dark scenary.

If you like a little bit of recent history, a visit to the KGB museum tells how it was with the USSR's intelligence service monitoring visitors to Estonia. Listening devices hidden in plates and ash trays is the stuff of Sean Connery era James Bond films. If you like those, you will like this. A visit to the infamous 23rd floor. Well worth an hour of your time and €13. Good view over the old town from there too.

Cool concept, poor execution. The hotel has a very rich history and the views from the 23rd floor are breathtaking. However the "museum" itself consists of 2 rooms with some old russian equipment and classified documents. One moment that stood out was when the tour guide showed us an ashtray, which supposedly had a hidden microphone, but then told us "it's not this one though, this is a normal ashtray." Overall, good museum if you have an amazing imagination. The guide was very cool and passionate aswell.

The museum is a really neat piece of history, but it's very small. Tour guide was funny, and very good at keeping the mood light.

I read a magazine in an airplane about this place (might been Wizzair or Finnair). This was years ago and since then I really wanted to visit it. Totally worth it. We took accommodation at the same hotel where the museum is at, we stayed at 20th floor and the tour happened at 23rd floor. Coming from Romania, ex comunist country, the tour wasn't hard to believe. Tip: it can be very windy upstairs, if you have long hair, better have it tied up. :)

A very interesting place to see. Our tour guide Pavel (if it's his real name, he wouldn't tell) was genius. He was funny and very informative, he had great stories and a lot of interesting information. Also the view is absolutely stunning. But be aware tours fill up quickly so book in advance.

Those intrigued by the city's secret history can take the guided tour of the KGB Museum on the 23rd floor of Sokos Hotel Viru. In Soviet times it was rumoured that the KGB had files on everyone and that they operated in the Viru Hotel. The latter rumour turned out to be true, as you will see on this fascinating tour. Not only will you get an inkling for what the operatives were up to, you'll also get some great insights into the history of the hotel, which was designated exclusively for foreign guests visiting the USSR. To continue the 1980s throwback theme, you can pay a visit to the hotel's second floor Currency Bar.

11 euros. You have to book your visit on the website, or at the hotel. Excellent and really interesting museum and history. I recommend. There is a rooftop bar opening at 15.30 to 22 at the top of the hotel, the same stage as the KGB museum.

Brilliant place! The soviet era hotel had a KGB output on its topmost floor from where guests would be spied upon right into their room as well as restaurants and common area. Post independence, the KGB area has been converted to a museum and it is brilliant

I’m not sure why this needs to be by guided tour only, they could easily open this up. The guide Eva was great, couldn’t quite work out if she was putting her best Soviet impression on or if that was just her haha. She explained lots about the hotel too which was really interesting as the first time tourists were allowed into the country. I agree with some of the other reviews, the tour is a little pricey for looking at two rooms (I was expecting a whole floor) but the views are incredible and interesting to see some of the equipment used!

Really nice small tour but when you have a guide that explains the story of the hotel with a beautiful touch of humor. It makes it a must. Also because of the view you have. Thanks Pavel, our guide.

Mainio vierailukohde Tallinnassa. Erinomainen opas, joka kertoi KGB:n toiminnasta ja Neuvostoaikaisen Viron tapahtumista. Vanha KGB:n kuunteluhuone myös nähtävissä.

Had a great tour with Magrit. She brought to life what it was like living locally to the hotel during soviet times. Very informative and interesting tour, would highly recommend.

Wandered around in the reception/shopping mall about one hour, could not get anoyoe or any directions to how to enter the actual museum. Rode alot of elevators though, that's always fun. We left.

Great museum, good info and has everything I need to know about KGB. Defenetly recommend but the younger audience might not be too interested.

Pavel was very good host for the tour, engaging and well suited for the role. Tour was tight but gave just about what was expected. One should book a tour at the KGB museum at first and then head to the KGB jail museum to complete the journey.

Just like all the other reviewers, I have to agree that the aspect that makes the tour enjoyable is the tour guide. He tells anecdotes and explains the objects so that you can start to imagine what life was like back then being a foreigner or local in soviet Estonia. It was definitely very interesting. However, our tour only lasted around 45 minutes and for €13 it is on the more expensive side. Like other reviews say, it is just 2 rooms and a corridor once you get there and if our tour was any busier, it would have been a squash getting everyone in.

Very interesting museum about the history of how the KGB used the hotel for their nefarious purposes. Our guide was very knowledgeable and passionate about the subject. Tickets are bought in the hotel lobby but the museum itself is on the secretive 23 (top) floor so comes with some amazing views over the city.

Asiantunteva ja huumorintajuinen opas sai museon elämään mielikuvissa, vaikka huoneita oli vain kaksi! Tunti meni siivillä ja naurun säestyksellä!

Great service, elevator is so fast. Breakfast was delicious. Really convenient place to stay.

Rehellinen kuvaus KGB:n toiminnasta. Pienessä tilassa paljon asiaa ja hyvin hotellin yhteydessä. Parvekkeelta erinomainen näköala kaikkialle.

Really interesting tour about how the KGB spied on residents in the Viru Hotel. I hadn't done any research before we went so was a bit confused about the hotel bit. The tour is on the 23rd floor of the hotel. You do have to book in advance. Some of the info online says you can just turn up but unless you're lucky enough to arrive just as a tour in the right language starts, you'll be turned away.

Interesting and a learnt some new facts, not fully worth it as you needed longer to look around. It's not the whole floor you see, just 2 rooms. The views were incredible

The KGB Museum is a must-see sight in Tallinn offering a great view to Estonia's history during the Soviet times. There are a lot of original items on display so you can really feel how KGB ruled the hotel. In order to enter, you need to sign up for one of the guided tours that depart from the lobby of Hotel Viru. The easiest way to book is via Hotel Viru's web pages. The guided tour is worth every minute: the guides tell about their own experiences from Soviet times with a fun twist. Warm recommendation!

Ery interesting place to visit and nice to know how life under communism really was. Very nice guide. Good story teller.

I liked it, and there were some great stories, but expected more. Would be better if the displays were better organised. Also, I was hoping for a gift ship to buy something to remember my visit, but none exists.

Label made this tour incredible- what a funny witty character and one of the best tour guides you can have. Incredible story of the missing floor where the KGB was stationed. Absolutely recommend this tour- one of the best in Tallinn. It does sell out so book in advance.

Small and expensive ,tour group was large relative to the amount of content . Would not recommend. In the future , they should limit the amount of people they take and the amount they charge. Tour guide was good though . Would not recommend but room for improvement for future tours !

Impressive. Good guide tells interesting story

This hotel has a very confusing electric system that makes it a logic puzzle to figure out how to turn a light on without turning others on. In addition, the hotel has spotlights everywhere, even for the reading lights. The reading lights are way too bright and it is ridiculously easy to bump the light switch and shine the light directly in your face while you are trying to sleep.

Amazing tour guide paving our way back to the micro-concrete time. Thank you Pavol, we had a great time with your talented explanations ! A few items to see but a great insight of a babuchka's daily life 😁

  • 5/5 Pauline D. 2 years ago on Google
It's all in the storytelling of the guide! That makes the quirky collection of espionage and Sovjet objects into a real adventure. Plus a great view on Tallinn from the balcony.

  • 5/5 Michal H. 3 years ago on Google
Great piece of history. You get a tour at the top of the Viru Hotel and with that also great views. There's also a bar on top, if you are into that kind of thing. Really recommend for anyone even bit into history.

  • 5/5 NS G. 4 years ago on Google
Very knowledgeable and humorous guide. A great piece of history at this special “floor”. View from the top of this building is simply breathtaking too. Highly recommend this tour just for the view even if you are not interested with history.
