国宝指定が新型コロナ第一波まっさかりな二〇二〇年三月であったため、これっぽっちも注目されなかった「綿貫観音山古墳出土品」を展示の目玉とする歴史資料館です。常設の国宝展示と通史展示のほか、企画展示もあります。 通史展示はよくある郷土資料館のレベルです。上野国は律令制下における関東の中心であり、建武中興に大功のあった新田義貞の本拠でもあって、中世までのコンテンツはそれなりに充実していますが、戦国時代は武田・上杉・後北条の草刈り場、江戸時代は中小の大名家が入れ代わり立ち代わりの状態であったため、通して見るとどうにもぱっとしません。企画展示の方は、規模と予算からすれば頑張っているのでしょうが、基本は子供向けで大人がわざわざ見に行くほどのもではありません。やはりこの博物館の真価は、国宝展示室の綿貫観音山古墳出土品にあると言えます。 綿貫観音山古墳は石室の崩落が幸いして盗掘をまぬがれ、結果、貴重な副葬品の数々が現在に伝えられています。新羅に滅ぼされた百済・高句麗の遺民の多くは地方に入植、その過程で大陸の技術と文化が全国に伝播しました。上野三碑などからもその経緯をうかがい知れますが、綿貫観音山古墳の出土品は中国、朝鮮からの出土品との類似性が指摘されていて、目に見える形で渡来文化の影響を実感できます。 観音山古墳からは一キロほど離れていて両方見るには少々不便ながらも、高崎駅からのバスもそこそこの本数が運行されています。不遇ながらも十分な見ごたえであり、古代史好きにはおすすめです。

複数人の儀礼を模した埴輪が非常に印象的です。またまだ輝きを残す銅水差し（国宝）など、貴重な副葬品が見られます。これらが出土した綿貫観音山古墳はこちらも綺麗に整備されており、車で5分程度なのでぜひついでに立ち寄る事をおすすめします。
