I stayed at Yunomineso for one night while hiking on the Kumano Kodo after completing the 25KM walk from Chikatsuyu to Hongu Taisha. My feet were aching and I couldn't have asked for a better place to recover and be completely pampered. The staff at this hotel were incredibly sweet and attentive, and always had huge smiles on their faces. They spoke English fairly well and were happy to help you with whatever you needed. The natural hot spring onsen were heavenly. The ryokan has two public onsen (that are gender-segregated), with each one having an outdoor area and an indoor area. From the outdoor bath, you can see the rolling hills and lush forest while the sun sets. I went right before dinner and also fairly late at night (around 11) and was fortunate enough to have the baths to myself both times. After a certain hour, they switch the men and women's bath so that you get a chance to see both of them. I ventured into the private bath for a minute (there are two of them) however I actually much preferred the public bath since the private ones were very small and offered no views other than the wooden walls surrounding it. The changing areas were spacious with tatami floors and offered lockers and standard toiletries. The highlight of my stay was the dinner. I was seated at my table for one and was given a sheet with clip-art style pictures of everything I was going to eat that evening and in which order I was supposed to eat it in. The attention to detail was incredible (I had to take a picture because I found the clipart so accurate, down to the garnish). The meal was rich, traditional, and had a variety of dishes including onsen plum wine, sashimi, soup, shabu shabu, chrysanthemum and tofu salad, soufflé. seaweed salad, grilled ayu river fish (from the Kumano river), miso soup, Japanese pickles, rice, and yuzu sorbet. Once again, the service was exceptional. My room was a traditional Japanese room with tatami floors and a futon bed (which they were kind enough to lay out for me during dinner). I had a magnificent view of an adjacent village and the mountains/forest beyond it. The room was spacious and clean, and had a separate area for the entrance way and toilet as well as a little kitchen table near the window. The WiFi worked perfectly, despite what other reviewers had mentioned. In the morning after breakfast (another feast with plenty of different dishes), the staff at the hotel were kind enough to drive me into Yunomine Onsen to catch the bus for the next portion of my hike (Yunomineso is a little ways outside of Yunomine Onsen, probably about a 15 minute walk) downhill. Overall, this was a highlight of my trip on the Kumano Kodo and a great place to stay to recharge while on the trail.

Excellent service! They looked after us since the first minute. The premises are awesome and lovely. You can enjoy a tipical Japanese onsen included in the stay and they have two private onsen that you don't need to book. We had a private dinner that was delicious and our waiter was really kind and polite. We couldn't have enjoyed more. 6 out of 5. Highly recommended if you want to do Kumano kodo.

This Japanese Inn (ryokan) is located a 10 min walk away from the center of Yunomine village. The facilities are a little older, but it's very spacious and the staff is extremely friendly and obliging. The meals were plentiful and innovative - dinner was mostly traditional Japanese fare but with some very nice and tasty Western additions, such as a fish stew with puff pastry cap. The bathing faculties are great. There are two large baths, one for women, the other for men, each with an outside and an inside bath. The assignment men/women are switched in the evening so that one gets to experience both bathing faculties. There are also two very nice and atmospheric "family baths" outside

Such warm staff!!! Food was amazing!!! Had a 12 course japanese fare but the beef was unforgettable. The owner greeted us (our family of 4) when we walked in and Yo-san served us our meals. He was so engaging and so funny. We had such a great time talking to him during our dinner. The onsens both public and private were serene and relaxing. We really enjoyed every part of our stay, just wish it was longer.

What a brilliant place, like Disneyland for adults. Place might be tired in a few spots, but rooms are large and comfortable, staff can't be faulted, facility itself had more than you could want, the food is high quality and the onsen facilities are great. I didn't want to leave...................

Great food and super friendly staff. This place is exactly what I imagined an old school onsen ryokan to be. Highly recommended to anyone who plans to go to yunomine.

So when you first arrive here, clearly the decor has not been updated for a while…fear not, this place is phenomenal. Every aspect of the service is 5 star standard. The explanation of every aspect of what is a very Japanese establishment is explained carefully to you, from the process of using the marvelous onsen (we had a private bath, freely available to all guests, subject to availability), to the degustation of local cuisine served in our room. Even the breakfast is an education in local specialities. The highlight is how the staff, from the front desk, to the driver, to the waiting staff, to bloke that prepares your futon are clearly wanting your experience to be good as possible.

Best onsen in Yunomines, nice staff, big onsen, excellent food, maybe little bit expensive, but it's worth. Two dogs are barking at the guest, the rooftop is a mustgo place, especially at nice , you could see the stars and galaxies Note that they have car to transfer you to the main street (free)

This hotel is just a delight. The outside yes is a little bit dated. But rooms are well designed and comfortable. The standouts here are three fold: the onsen including the private onsen is fantastic. They don’t use a boiler and the water is the same as flows into the unesco site nearby. The food is the best we have had along our trip, especially the sashimi. Wow. And the staff couldn’t be more professional and friendly. Shout out to Taka and San especially for all the help. Thanks for a wonderful stay!

The hotel is a little old but the services , the kindness and the food make up for it. We spent 1 night and we would have liked to stay more. Nice private bath ideal for families, and nice inside/outside onsen. The dinner was outstanding and they tried to make everyone in the family happy by adjusting the menu for us. We all loved our stay!

Amazing ryokan experience. We booked a wrong place elsewhere and they happened to have a vacant room so it was a last minute booking, but they treated us with such hospitality and kindness all the same, even helped us call the place we booked to explain the situation. Shared baths are spacious and comfortable, well-kept, and private onsen was also great. Food was delicious and in perfect portions. Beautiful room, and overall great experience!

We really enjoyed our stay here. The staff is very friendly and helpful, they do everything to make your stay memorable and to make you feel at home. We stayed here for 2 nights and from the first day we felt like coming home. After walking the kumano kodo loop walk from yunomine the onsen in the ryokan is the best way to relax after a long day off walking. Also the food is delicious(and more than plenty). Last but not least the 2 mascots are so cute and cudly, whom go by the names Mago and Kuma. We highly recommend this ryokan to anyone travelling to yunomine.

Building is scary ugly from the outside, but the staff are very friendly and the rooms and service is fine. It might be time for new carpet in the hallways, but common areas and dining rooms are well kept and the food was great. It does look like an old military hospital from the outside though.

Large spa complex with 2 private onsen and 2 communal onsen both with indoor/outdoor areas. We stayed 2 nights in a comfortable room with ensuite toilet. Both nights we had an 11 course meal tasting a wide variety of things. All the staff gave excellent service.

Great facilities and views of the surrounds but the best by far, were the staff. Warm, inviting, professional and would go above and beyond, at every point in the stay, to make it as comfortable and as enjoyable as possible. Would give them all 6 stars if we could.
