A compulsory stop in this area, along with Hellfire Pass and Erawan Falls. For clear photos on the bridge (tourist-free), there is a lull between those out at first light and the second wave a while later. Cool to be on the bridge when a train passes: there are obvious places to step aside. I recommend staying at the River Kwai View Hotel: located right next to the bridge and they serve a very full breakfast. Really nice, helpful staff. Also have an Amazon cafe and a 7/11 right outside.

River Kwai bridge is a very important place in Thailand and something that Thai people are very proud of. We were lucky enough to visit the bridge on the annual festival of Kanchanaburi. It was an amazing festival with a huge night market, light show at the bridge and a whole theater. Gorgeous!

It is an old bridge. We have similar structures in India. It is a popular tourist destination and attracts Thai tourists also. This place has a lot of eateries. There is a nearby private war museum. The war museum is a must visit because it has too many items on display. Usually most foreigners ride the train from this stop so the train gets really crowded. It might be a good idea to board the train on the previous stop. Train tickets cost around 100 THB for foreigners.

It was fun to stand there and see the train pass through. The train was old and looked like trains in Vietnam. There were many people there to see the train and after that take pictures of the railway, the temple nearby and the river. We spent some time there to take pictures and walk along the railway. After that we found a place where the street vendors sold coconut. We decided to try some. The coconuts were cool, sweet and fresh. The price was cheap.

Another historic and scenic spot in Kanchanaburi.. worth visiting but other than walking along the bridge and taking a boat around the river (recommended).. nothing else to do.. so expect to spend around 1 hours here at maximum

Took the bridge from the train so didn't really see the bridge. It is a unique bridge with rich history. But it's not really worth the time to travel just to visit the bridge. It is best to combine it with other attractions nearby like the nature reserves, etc. Stop at River Kwai Bridge station (one stop after Kanchanaburi Station) if you want to take photos of the bridge. It stops just before crossing the bridge. I made the mistake of taking the train across the bridge and the next station is very far away from the bridge.

A bridge that is so popular in making war films, did not expect this bridge to be so narrow... intriguing experience. For those who are taking trains, do note that the ticket counter is closed, you can get the tickets on the train.

Great atmosphere most of the time, if you don't mind crowds. Both the station and the bridge are often crowded with tourists and selfie takers. Every year, just before Christmas, there is a fantastic, completely over the top, re-enactment of the true & false story of the Bridge over the River Kwai. Do try and get to this if you can. Enjoy the atmosphere, but be careful of josling crowds.

No need to buy ticket. Will be great to visit early in the morning before the crowds passing this old bridge. We can enjoy the river and some boats passing by. You can also visit the temple nearby (go down from the stairs at the end of the bridge) Make sure not to wear slippery sandals.

Interesting to see and to learn a bit about history. Memories coming up from the movie. To walk over the bridge is for free. Nice view over the river. We spend there around 1 hour.

Great food market there Historical bridge with a lot of nice places to take photos The museum is few minutes walking distance, for only 50 baht you can go through a tour of the world war era. Street food is nice on both ends of the bridge. A bit slippery when it rains.

Historical place, there are plenty of food options, a 7-11 and souvenir shops around the area. You can walk across the bridge and read the information about the old times. You can see the scenic view of river Kwai and massive statue of Chinese goddess Guanyin opposite side.

A truly amazing place to visit. So much history behind this iconic structure, a must see for all who visit Thailand. There are a number of small museums around which I would also recommend, as they are very informative about the bridge and the human sacrifice made during its construction. Also make sure to wait for the train to pass over! A special place to visit and a once in a lifetime experience for sure.

We visited here during the week, and it was so very busy. It was very hard to get a photo without people acting stupid. We went back later in the day to watch the train come back across the bridge. The train blows its whistle to announce its approval, yet people still step out in front of the trains approach. The best time to see the train crossing is the six am. or the 5.30 pm runs.

The bridge itself is equal parts beautiful and bittersweet. Absolutely amazing views of both the bridge and of the river end nearby temple. Make sure to read up on the history of the bridge before going. The surrounding area is setup to cater to tourist's with food, souvenir and jewellery stores/ markets in the immediate area. Nearby restaurants as well. There were some posted signs warning about a high volume of pickpockets in the area. Aim to visit early in the morning if possible to avoid crowds.

This historical bridge is free to enter. You can take 10 mins walk and taking photos with the beautiful view. Then you can enjoy the small market there and eat at nice restaurants along the river.

Definitely one of the bucket list when visiting Thailand. Full of history. Once in lifetime must take the normal train to reach there. You can walk on the train railway but at own risk, no handrail or any safety features.

Historical place. One of the most known worldwide. Good to walk among. When you're lucky the train can pass you there. Be careful of power lines on the side of the bridge which can be reach by hand.

It is a historical site. We came after lunch time and there is quite a crowd in the bridge so it is challenging to get a good picture. As it was a hot day, a frozen coke is very suitable.

Fantastic bridge at Kanchanaburi. Many tourists, shops and food stalls nearby. It took about 10 mins walk from start to end of this bridge. The train arrived at 2.50pm. The bridge looked solid and stable. Tourists should go there and enjoy a walk on the bridge and nice scenery.

The bridge of river Khwae is significant landmark of Kanchnaburi province. And a popular tourist attractions. During the day it gets very hot and humid so when you are visiting, ensure to bring lots of sun protection including sunscreen. You can walk from one end of the bridge to the other, which is exactly what many visitors do. Along the way, you can appreciate this historic bridge & rail line built by the Japanese army's prisoners from the World War 2

What more can I say? It’s the Bridge Over the River Kwai. It’s a very cool bridge and there is still a tourist train to crosses it daily. I had a fantastic view of it from my hotel room and I did not get tired of looking at it, and thinking of the lives lost to build it. Very solemn to gaze at it. This was my first visit to the bridge and I have lived here for two years, and have been coming to Thailand for over 20 years. Why did I wait so long?

On its own this is just a black steel bridge, but being it a historical place, makes it special and well-worth a visit. Recommended to first visit the museum close by to learn about the history of the railroad.

Photography tip - If you want to beat the crowd and grab a photo of the train as it travels over the River Khwae Bridge in Kanchanaburi, walk onto the bridge at either 6am or 7am, and wait for the train to travel past at approximately 6:10am and 7:10am. The bridge has several viewing platforms where you can stand to watch the train travel safely past. Also, early in the morning, you can grab a photo with no one on the bridge. The bridge was built by prisoners of war during World War II. The prisoners came from Australia, Britain, Netherlands and the US - Japan also forced labourers from other Asian countries to assist in building the Thai–Burma Railway during this time. The bridge was bombed several times in 1945 by airforces associated with the Commonwealth. The rail line is also referred to as 'Death Railway.' It is possible to walk across this rail bridge at any time of the day - but, be ready to make way for oncoming trains.

Not a lot to see or do, besides standing on the bridge for 10 minutes. It is however a nice bridge, with a big history. Definitely recommend to read up on the history before you go, makes it a lot more interesting and heavy.

This historical bridge is still in use by the local train service. You should come here at the end of the year. There is the Lights and Sounds Festival. Spectacular reenactment of the WW2 history and fireworks will be displayed.

I read the book The bridge over the river Kwai as a child, so it was sort of iconic for me to visit a bridge that is one of the monuments dedicated to remembrance of all the victims who died slaving away at the Death Railway. This site ticks all the boxes. It is well connected, easy to get to and provides all the modern amenities to serve the many daily visitors that visit the site brought in by coaches, cars and railway. There is a massive car park with an indoor market selling all sorts of of trinkets and jewellery. There is a bank, a 7-11 shop, ATM and an outdoor market with all the usual Thai food stalls selling meat on sticks, fruits, smoothies, etc. It just sort of fails on delivering the information about the fallen POWs. There’s a market stylised as a POW camp on the opposite side of the river. I found that quite distasteful. There are many photos from the era of building the Death Railway and from shortly after the liberation. However, these are above the stalls around the car park and not in the eye-height level.

A replica bridge which is a stirring reminder of a dark time in history. We crossed on the train which was a hot bumpy ride, but worth it. Good views of the countryside and river. You can see remnants from the original bridge

Historically a iconic river, they still have the old train running, so nostalgic. Come here to see the locals, small shops around with so much cultural. The scenery is splendid!

It’s a nice historic place. It can be packed with other visitors, so the serenity is quite subdued when you visit here. There are several food stalls and a restaurant nearby. I did not cross the bridge to the other side, so I don’t know what’s on the other side. Really nice to visit close to sunset.

A nice place to visit - wasn’t very crowded on the day we visited. Luckily the weather was pretty good that day.

  • 4/5 Franck C. 11 months ago on Google
Nice bridge with and history. Best if you actually see the train passing on it or actually be on that train. Other than that not so much to see. You can also walk on the bridge, all the way back and forth.

  • 4/5 Erich G. 11 months ago on Google
This not the old wooden bridge from the movie anymore because this one is made from steel and concrete. In any case some nice pictures can be taken at this historical place. If you take the so called death railway train from here to Tham Krasae station buy the ticket in the train for 50 THB and not at the station from tourist agent sellers for 200 THB. Nothing more to see during this train ride as just nature.

Good place to visit but very crowded eps during the time train is about to come. Good view and many spot to take photo. And good to see the memorial plate to memorize about the war crime prisoners and how the bridge was built.

Beautiful area, free to explore and take pictures on the bridge and surrounding area. Lots of shops and a museum close by that is open earlier in the day. Train runs in early morning. Night life and restaurants within walking distance are also wonderful. Unique piece of history to remember those who sacrificed and to learn from.

👍👍 I came here to play tribute to all POW who died here during WW 2. In fascinated by history and having watched the famous British film "Bridge On The River Quai" I felt like coming here. So here I am. Silent and sad. Let's respect the dead. We will join them sooner or later.
